Non-stick cookware has only been linked to causing cancer... IN PRODUCTION. Where workers were spraying the stuff on pans in open rooms, without ventilation, or PPE. Which... like, yah, duh, that's not a safe way to handle it. And sure, if Ian wants to not use non-stick because he's concerned about working conditions overseas, great. But that's not why he said that and that's not why he doesn't use non-stick. However, if you are concerned about the workers health, look for non-stick pans made in first world countries, or countries with specifically strong workers rights, occupational health and safety agencies and the like, such as Canada, America, Germany, France.

PTFE non stick pans actually get dangerous very quickly. Once they are heated up to more than 360°C/680°F chemicals are set free which can cause immediate dizzyness and sickness. It's especially dangerous for pets, thousands of birds which were sitting in a cache in the kitchen have died of it already.

About the maple syrup: My parents made birch syrup growing up. Birch syrup is made with the same process of maple syrup, from Birch trees growing in Western Canada. It's a savoury syrup, but the process is identical; my dad used the same equipment; the only difference is how long you harvest. Guys, harvesting sap DOES NOT HURT THE TREES. My parents would use the exact same trees, year after year, and they're fine. They're still there and growing, and farmers know when to stop tapping (they need healthy trees to make good syrup, my dad would dump sap that was "cloudy", which doesn't happen often but it does happen, and then he would stop using that tree). My dad compared it to a person going to give blood once a year. So eat as much maple syrup as you want without feeling guilty. Putting maple syrup on your pancakes from a glass bottle and a local farmer is more sustainable than eating that weird Aunt Jemima stuff that's pure corn syrup out of a plastic bottle and a big corporation (us Canadians have been waging war on Aunt J for centuries, anyway, so support the Canadians, we're nice). The whole sap/water vs syrup thing is an argument that's only touted by people who know nothing of trees or the process. EDIT: I should clarify, it would hurt the trees if you hooked up about 10-15 buckets from each tree, rather than one, which is standard, so no, the way syrup is harvested now is not hurting the trees! Edit #2; in the video he talks about the energy used to make maple syrup, but I'm not quite sure what he means by that? Most maple/birch syrup farmers as I'm aware use wood burning, but considering the amount of wood we chop down anyway I sincerely doubt that has a huge impact. If they use electric (again, I don't know of any that do or even if they make evaporators, the big machines that make the syrup, that run on electric) how is that any different from the millions of restaurants and households that use their stoves and ovens every single day? I was more breaking down the argument that 'maple syrup hurts the trees' that I've heard before. Side note: Never thought I'd be putting all of my syrup making knowledge that my dad hammered into my head so much on the internet but HERE WE ARE.
@Psychwriteify4 жыл бұрын
I want to know more about this birch syrup.
@angelinakim89134 жыл бұрын
Didn't even consider the trees when he said that, only thought about the energy needed in the boiling process... I hope that's what he was talking about 😂
@moretyquira4 жыл бұрын
@@angelinakim8913 in the video he talks specifically about the sap, which is kind of like the trees' "blood"; and in terms of energy a lot of farmers use wood-burning which is what the evaporator uses (it's the machine that boils the syrup); even people who use electrical/gas stoves, that's nothing in comparison to all the cooking that's done in restaurants, homes, etc, every day. Edit: nevermind i went back to check, and yeah, he talks about the energy. But again, a dumb argument that clearly shows he doesn't know anything about the process. Like, again, restaurants exist.
@moretyquira4 жыл бұрын
@@Psychwriteify it's not a pancake syrup and should be used sparingly, haha. Kind of a burnt caramel, molasses taste. Really good on vanilla ice cream, but can be used for cooking in stirfrys or in marinades. My parents don't make it anymore but there are a lot of Canadian companies that still make it. :)

Teflon - You've not addressed whether the coating comes off into the food particularly if it's damaged by say using metal utensils in it. There have been studies that show that these chemicals are pervasive in human bodies at this point - not great. I prefer to err on the side of caution and go with uncoated, ceramic coated and cast iron over teflon

Oh, he will. He literally went on a tirade after he claims some people at Whole Foods shamed his basket. Honestly, I don’t believe people attacked him at WF. Secondly, he took a picture of the basket and had all the greens standing up in the basket like bouquets. If anything they commented on that. He took it as they were attacking his purchases and saying that’s the problem that more people don’t buy baskets full of greens.

one of my best friends and i (history/classics degrees at uni) were talking the other day about how in roman times, aristocratic food choices were all about trying to convey a simple, rustic life -- the elite cottagecore grow your own food trends prevalent in people such as ian prove that nothing has really changed!! haha and i say this as someone who has met ian at charity events and thinks he's great! but advocating this mentality without enough awareness of privilege can be alienating. love this abbey!

My family actually grew up in real poverty in the Appalachian area, my grandma had no running water in her home. And i dont care one bit about anyones feelings on food and whether theyre smug or elitest about it. Im not triggered and i dont care if anyone acknowledges their "privilege". Maybe thats because i was raised around people who actually had a hard life and they were just greatful for what they did have and weren't whiny little brats.

I eat fish (mostly salmon) for breakfast along with sautéed vegetables and a runny fried egg prob once a week or so (on the weekends). It has a nice amount of fat and protein and is really savory and delicious. BUT I don’t have a baby to care for and enjoy cooking! My boyfriend is a chemist who specifically researches PFOAS and derivatives. Overall they’re harmful for the environment and we don’t fully know the health risks. In addition they can’t be broken down easily if at all using natural processes so they collect in the environment including drinking water. So using these sorts of products isn’t just cooking with them it’s all of the environmental impacts as well. Also a lot of companies will tout they don’t use PFOAS with their products but that’s a tricky way to say that they’re using PFOA derivatives that are very close in chemical makeup to PFOAS and also not as well understood. Anyways thought I would share!

Here in the Netherlands, non-stick pans are a hot item in the news because of the toxic chemicals that get released when the non-stick layer gets scratched or damaged in any way. A non-stick pan may claim that it's PFAS-free, but that only takes in consideration the most well known of those chemicals I believe? I don't know the details or anything but that's what I've heard on very high established news programmes and such..
