Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. I had never experienced a panic attack until I was 22, after a traumatic event, and I got diagnosed with PTSD, GAD with panic attacks. I still remember having those awful panic attacks out of nowhere, at age 27, when I was in a middle of a date in the park, and feeling that something horrible, horrible was about to happen. At that moment I could felt certainty that an horrible tragic event was coming, but I didn't know what, and I just felt this immense fear that I couldn't control and I didn't know what to do, was it an earthquake? I just felt terror, trembling, tears coming out from my eyes... When I was a child I was very perfectionist and my father, whom I didn't grew up with for long, remembers me as a bright child who usually had "tummy belly aches". I recall being a picky eater, and being quite proud of my good grades, but maybe my father noticed this as an early "predisposition to anxiety", as be later told me his daughter from his second marriage reminded him of me, because of those exact issues, tummy belly aches and focus on academics excellence at a young age. Secretely I was hoping she didn't ended up screwed up like me. (Fortunately she didn't. She's a brilliant nurse travelling the world). But it wasn't until the PTSD that all the anxiety was unleashed. I was already on treatment for depression. I tried a treatment for PTSD but I quit when the psychiatrist wanted to give me anti-psychotics. I switched back to depression therapy and unfortunately my wonderful and well meaning doctor (who was a family doctor) confused SI and treatment resistant depression witn BPD. Asked me if I would be OK if a psychiatrist she trusted did an evaluation, I said sure. The lady sure pushed my buttons and made me cry. I was derived to DBT. But despite being misdiagnosed with BPD, DBT actually helped me with my anger issues, SI and everything I learn there I am able to apply to this day, whenever I feel extremely anxious, I can recognise the emotions, I can recognise if there's an actual threat or it's just my anxiety making me hyper vigilant all the time, so I am able to at least try to explain it to my loved ones: I know it doesn't make sense, but this is how this conditions works. My panic attacks have been greatly reduced. No more harmful "copying mechanisms". As SOS, I have meds to deal with severe anxiety. I still avoid places and situations and need to go out with someone most of the time, specially after the pandemic. But I'm working on ot, one step at the time. I feel that my life would be much different and probably much better without that traumatic event. But also, some people have it worse and are resilient. Apologies for writing to much. If my journey can give hope to anyone struggling with severe panic attacks, it will be worthy. I kind of feel a bit proud looking back, despite still not being totally fine, it's great to be able to have tools to manage panic attacks. Embrace and understand your emotions.

Thank you for sharing your story. I know it will help many. It is sad that you were misdiagnosed, but I am glad you found DBT helpful in many ways. Everyone’s journey is different, yet we can all learn from each other.

Any videos on hormonal health anxiety? I'm in my forties and perimenopausal, and so many women are having horrible health anxiety in the transition before menopause. I have horrible cardiac anxiety. I get palpitations a lot. I've had it checked and they said I'm fine, and it's normal with these hormonal changes. It still scares , me and has messed with my quality of life.
