@davisc1926 I don't see any logic in this statement. If anything, an F-22 achieving only a 2:1 ratio over a Su-27 (if it were reproducible; and this simulation was accurate) would say that the F-22 is NOT as good as we believe (at least in close-in dogfight scenarios).

I still think my all time favorite random moment of missile madness was that time in the (I think) Harrier, doing the Falklands fight, where you fired at the A4 and the A4 fired back, and your Fox 2s both hit and exploded right in front of both airplanes, and the A4 came bursting through the fire like 3 feet off the nose. That was crazy.

Yes, the Flanker family is an attractive group of aircraft. The way the front of the fuselage transitions from a flat streamline to what resembles a long neck that juts out and above the intakes that is pointing the nose slightly downward, giving the neck the effect of having a hump, and that nose looking like a really big bullet. They look intimidating.

Is there an advantage or disadvantage to top firing flares? Every time I see an aircraft with them, preflaring they seem to almost go in the path of the jet, rather than away from the jet like you see with the raptor here

A lot of missiles, notably the Sidewinder, are programmed to go for the highest target under the assumption that the highest leading heat source will be the nozzle/nozzles.
