I was diagnosed in 2013 with Ulcerative Colitis and had my colon and rectum removed during an emergency surgery in February 2017. I thought it was CRAZY how much your stomach and small intestine really don't digest. Food would come out through my stoma pretty much whole no matter how much I chewed. + the amount of water your colon removes is WILD! I got pictures back of my colon when they removed it & it was pretty much as tall as me (I'm 5'2") I was shocked! My digestive system is obviously VERY different now and things move through me in about 4-6 hours. I never really cared about what went on inside my body before, but now I've become an addict about knowing everything. Long story short, I love your channel! Thanks for making this video!

Emily Parris I have crohns so I understand. Was diagnosed when I was 20/21. I'm 26 now. I still havnt had colon thank goodness but I am taking medicine (entyvio) right now. So yeah I pay a lot of attention to digestion.

MHSMagicLuver oh wow! How's he entyvio doing? I've heard some good things about it. When I was in the ICU right before my surgery they tried EVERYTHING. They said "your colon is just too far gone" it was going to rupture at any second. Anyways, if you do end up getting an ostomy, I kind of loved it. It saved my life & made it so I had a life again

Emily Parris it's doing great right now. I first started on remicade. Workwdfor two years then I had antibodies to it. Was put on cimzia. That again worked for two years. At that point my flare up was horrible. Lost 10 lbs in a week. Couldn't keep water down. Worst part is my joints had excruciating pain in my ankles and knees. I would come home from work and just cry. Been on entyvio for a year and so far it has been perfect

I suffer from IBS, so they diagnosed me with anyhow. I had severe issues with stomach pains / constant cramping, etc a few years ago during an extremely stressful time in my life. I had several procedures and tests done, including but not limited to- endoscopy (camera placed down my esophagus into my stomach to search for ulcers) Esophageal stretching, blood tests, saliva tests, even a hysteroscopy (insertion of a camera into the uterus and cervix) etc and the physicians eventually landed on IBS. I've had on and off issues since then but lately, I've been experiencing extreme discomfort nearly every time I eat. I've been experiencing extreme bloating and cramping not only in my tummy but also my lower back. I would love more videos on digestion, maybe even a segment on IBS since so many people suffer from this condition. especially women. Thank you so much for taking the time to educate others, love your vidoes and your sweet little fam!

I'm an aspiring nutritionist/health coach and I love this series/ all your videos! You're so good at condensing information and making it understandable. I also loved what you said about gut health being linked to other issues. I have a genetic disorder called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and I'm not sure if you've heard of it but it's got to do with all of the collagen in the body being faulty. But an interesting part of it is that it causes all kinds of digestion issues, gastroparesis, and malabsorption along with its other symptoms. I know certain things like probiotics and eating slower help with digestion, but if you could go into how to improve digestion and absorption of nutrients as well as gastroparesis, I feel like that could be really helpful as well!

I have celiac disease so naturally my digestion is kind of screwed up. Your overview really helped me to connect and understand what is going on when I get glutened with the overall process of digestion. Thanks so much! Would love an explanation of how other digestive diseases work in this process.
@BeccaBristow7 жыл бұрын
So glad you found it helpful Kristin! So with celiac, when you consume gluten, it's all those little villi that take the brunt! It can destroy the villi, and kind of 'flatten' out the intestinal lining, which is why malabsorption is common among those with celiac, especially if it goes undiagnosed for a while. Very interesting stuff!

Hi Becca! Quick question: as a bio student, I've always been told that plants and fish contain unsaturated fats (olive oil, vegetable oil, salmon etc.) and animal products contain saturated fats (butter, meats, dairy.) However, coconut oil is a plant product, but it contains 92% saturated fat, and avocados also contain a fairly high saturated fat content for a plant! Can you explain the reason behind this?

Hey Becca! Love your videos. Very informative and simply put. I know gallbladder is needed for digestion abd wanted to see if you could do a video on how digestion would work without a gallbladder. I know quite a few people who no longer have a gallbladder, myself included. I'm interested to know how fat and other macros are digested without a gallbladder.😊
@BeccaBristow7 жыл бұрын
Hey girl! Fat is digested the same (with bile) but when you don’t have a glabladder you no longer have a storage place or ‘resevior’ for bile, so therefore you produce it more on demand (in the pancreas) and don’t have extra hanging out if that makes sense. It’s for this reason that eating a lot of fat at once may not be tolerated well!
@oshamv037 жыл бұрын

Hey Becca! I thought I was making progress before but I joined a gym and my coach there told me to eat a certain calorie amount and I can never get to it. Idk if I should be worried about it or is it a good thing? I know it’s bad to eat too low of calories because it fucks your metabolism up, but don’t you also need a calorie deficiency to loose weight? I’m 5’3 woman of medium build and my coach recommended 1,300 to 1,500 calorie diet. So I put my measurements into my fitness pal and they recommended a 1,250 calorie diet to loose 2lbs a week. But after I put my cardio in at the end of the day, sometimes it says I have 800 calories left in the day. Am I supposed to eat those calories?! It seems like a lot of food. I am really focused on loosing weight this time but I have had eating disorders in the past and don’t want to start up again.
@BeccaBristow7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jenny! If you are too low on calories, your body will not really allow itself to lose weight. And any weight you do lose, would likely be water weight or muscle (not good!!), since our bodies are made to protect themselves, if you're not providing enough fuel to your body, it will make sure to hold on to stored fat in order to have stores available, since it's not receiving adequate fuel. Does that make sense? I'm all for listening to your body and not necessarily sticking to an exact number day in and day out, but 800 net calories is definitely way too low! You definitely want your net calories for the day to be above 1200 at the very least
