I just bought the Sony A9M2 Quad today after a home demo from the Sony India team. I got it for $2160, including the SW5 subwoofer, with approximately $200 off on my American Express card, initialy price they quoted was above $3000 including SW5. It was a fantastic deal from Sony India, especially since I already have the Sony A80G OLED. The Sony executive helped me secure the best deal. Best way to get it will take some negotiation skills. Your review immensely helped me, and this system takes the audio experience to another level. You get the same theater-like IMAX and immersive audio experience at home. I also did use the S-Center connection to help use the TV speakers for center channel. I think for me that worked really well. If a TV shows had a scene of dialogue where the camera was behind the person and then in front of the person, the voice would switch between the right speaker and left speaker. It was very noticeable and distracting. I don't know if there was another setting that would have addressed but the s-center worked for me. How do you think this compares to a Sonos Arc + Era 300 + Sub setup?
@omgyeti20494 ай бұрын
I’ve only heard them in a store as a demo, but the audio quality was at least as good. Given that the spatial audio positioning was already better on the HT-A9 I’d say that puts this ahead of the Arc+300+Sub setup(which is what I currently also have). That alone wouldn’t be quite enough to convince me that an upgrade was worth it though. It’s the DTS support that pushes me over that edge. If Sonos would add(even sell as an add-on) DTS support I wouldn’t be eyeballing these Sony’s so hard, but unless the original Arc gets DTS it will be the last home theater Sonos I buy, even if the new Arc coming out finally supports it. I’ll still get Era 300’s for bedrooms and stuff, but that would be it for me.

I'm looking into purchasing an 85" Sony Bravia 7. I was heavily leaning towards the new Sonos Arc Ultra + the subwoofer for surround sound. I want to get the Sonos Era 300, but my couch is against the wall, and the speakers would be directly behind without the one-foot distance Sonos recommends, which brings me to the Sony Theatre Quad. Is this system better than the Sonos Arc Ultra paired with the subwoofer? Would the Quad be problematic if the rear speakers were placed directly behind my ears? Would either system be better than the in-wall Sonance VP62 LRC speakers with the surround in the ceiling above the couch? I'm asking this because I currently have three in-wall speakers (Speaker-Craft Aim LRC bought in 2011) and two overheard surrounds (not fancy speakers) connected to an Onkyo TX-NR7100 9.2 (Probably overkilled) that I'm not happy with. The movies or TV shows with lower dialogue or even slightly low have been a nightmare to hear clearly. I sometimes rewind and turn on the subtitles to make up the words. It is driving me bonkers. I know I could upgrade the in-wall speakers, but replacing the current 65" Sony (4 years old) with the 85" Sony Bravia 7 will be challenging because the bottom of the TV will be lower than the 65". Consequently, covering most of the LRC speakers. To make things worse, I have a fancy media console that I'm unwilling to change since it goes well with the room's decoration. So, here I am with this dilemma. Should I go with the Sony Arc Uttra, which will fit right on the wall between the media console and TV (with or without Sonos Era 300?), or the Theatre Quad, whose rear speakers could also be too close behind the head? The LR Quad speakers would have to be on a stand since they would block the TV viewing if placed on the media console. This set-up is in the living room, where I watch TV mainly in the winter. I'm out enjoying the weather as soon as the weather warms up in the spring. I don't play games and only watch streaming shows and movies.

Seems like a very niche product and not just because of the price. For people lacking space and placement options, these super wide speakers don’t appear to solve that as they wouldn’t have worked for me in my old apartment or my house. You also need 4 power outlets, ie. wires. Are we saying these speakers will sound better than a 5.1, cause at this price you could pay someone to run the wires through your walls and still come out ahead. Then you won’t be relying on a control box that will be outdated in a few years and have to throw the whole system out.

Duuuuude! Maybe my review sample was "broke" but when I tested the Quad with non-ideal speaker placement, it did NOT do a good job of compensating for that. Also, with Dolby Atmos test signals of 7.1.4 and 9.1.6- channel audio content, there were no "phantom channels" created between the front and rear surround channels. All of the surround test tones were sent to the rear channels, not phantom channels between the front and rear channels. Don't get me wrong, I thought the Quad system sounded great with an SW5 sub, but not as good as my 5.1.4 Denon/Klipsch component system for less money. And the 360SSM compensation just didn't really work that well in my testing. Also, good luck getting Sony 360 Reality Audio content out of the Quad. To do that, you need to connect an Amazon Fire TV stick to the second HDMI input on the Quad's control hub, and load up Amazon Music Unlimited on that FireTV stick for that 360 RA content. That said, it actually sounded very good when I listened to live concert tracks of Pink Floyd and studio cuts of Olivia Rodrigo or Pink in 360RA. Overall, I think the Quad can do a better job of reproducing that immersive "dome of sound" from Dolby Atmos, DTS:X or 360RA content, compared to a soundbar system but only if I placed the speakers in fairly optimized locations. how would it compare coming from a a true home 5.1.4 system ? would I miss it much as I am thinking of changing my living room around and not sure I want the hassle of re-wiring lol
@thecanadian59894 ай бұрын
Would this work if back speakers were right beside you not behind. I would have to put them right beside the chairs as there is an open dining room behind with no space for speakers. So putting them on end tables next to chairs would be what i would have to do. Would it work or would it defeat the sound dynamics

@caleb where did you get the black posts that you put the speakers on when they were placed behind the couch? I would like to pick those posts up too when I purchase the speakers later this year.

@caleb I've been considering upgrading from the HT-Z9F for some time now but have been extremely worried other systems will have the same wireless signal drop put problem. I live in an apartment with a lot of different wifi signals. Did Sony move away from the audio stream just being blasted outwards to something more direct ?

Great review! We and everyone who stops by our store are loving Sony's new flagship BRAVIA Theater Quad that is on display/demo in our main A/V showroom.

In your opinion, is this system as good or better than the nakamichi dragon? I like the minimalist look of these in comparison to the huge sound bar of the dragon.

We just got a Bravia 7 tv (x95k, love it btw) but I have a question about this surround system. On all of the pictures and videos I’ve seen the front speakers are lined up with the back speakers. Do they all have to align? Not every one’s living rooms are perfectly shaped.

Okay, just watched the rest of the video and saw that it will calibrate its self 😂✌️ sorry yall

For the rear position, can the speakers face “in”? Or do they have to face forward? I have an open kitchen behind my couch. Placing them behind the couch facing the couch would be my only option.

@ $4,400 AUD incl the larger sub which is a reasonable $700 AUD, Its quite a purchase but you would spend far more even for a pretty great speaker + receiver system if you included the Sony receiver (360 Spatial Sound Mapping 8K 7.2 ch AV Receiver | STR-AN1000) its really quite impressive and a reasonable $1,600. AUD plus your chosen sub (SVS 3000 Micro) $1,700 AUD on special Polk R700 floor stander pair $3,700 AUD, R300 centre speaker $800 AUD, plus R100 pair of rear speakers $1000 AUD for a total of $8,800 AUD. The Sony Quad at half the price looks a really good deal.

@Digital Trends I have a few questions. Does it make sense to upgrade Bravia Theater Quad with some external, good amplituner like Yamaha A8A? Is is even possible? If not, then does it make sense to upgrade it with any of Sony amplituners? Is it recommended and possible to upgrade it with more speakers to have 7 real speakers around?

To place the SW5 sub, is it required to do the subwoofer crawl test first, then do the Sony app calibration? Or do calibration first then the sub crawl?

Fantastic review! Does anyone know if the Bravia 8 TV is timbre-matched to the Quads to be used as a center channel? I know from personal experience my Sony A80J is not. 😢
@MrBritishComedy4 ай бұрын
Mounting it on walls and wall mounts, when you don't have the option to mount the fronts and/or rears to the wall in front/behind you, is a bit if a nightmare and requires a lot of creativity coz it doesn't come with keyholes or any other standard mounting options. Also, sometimes you have to calibrate it several times to get the perfect sound bubble, as sometimes it can sound like the phantom channel sound is definitely coming from either the left or the right speaker, not from the center. Recalibration will eventually fix that. Once its calibrated just right, it does sound just fantastic.

Never had wireless connection issue with my HT-A9 even with my speakers only a few feet from my wireless router they advise keeping them away from. Sounds like they fixed the problems with updates. Also IMO the HT-A9 is way more ethically looking and ease of placement and no complaints about the immersive sound stage.

A9 dropouts only really fixed for me when connected to the actual receiver and through earc on the TV. If I connect something to the TV with earc I'm getting dropouts.

@From-sl3yg4 ай бұрын
When you review the Bravia 9 could you also let us know how good the TV is as a center speaker or would it be better to use the Quads phantom as I am looking to pick them both up for Black Friday. Awesome review I am even more excited! Black Friday cant come quick enough! Haha

As you will soon learn, the Bravia 9’s speaker system is insanely good. But I am firmly in the camp of using the QUAD’s phantom center anyway. If anyone gets both? Try yourself and decide!

Assuming that you can use your Sony TV as the Center Speaker, like the previous model?
@S1mmz4 ай бұрын
Yeah, they've actually also improved the process as well. On the old model the TV and speakers played independently, hence you didn't get a great sonically sounding sound. On the quads the TV actually gets calibrated with the speakers and they play in unison so it sounds miles better.

I bought the HT A9 and Subwoofer 5 last December. Is this worth buying over that this soon?
@pg57973 ай бұрын
I also want an answer to that. My guess is if you have no connection issue and already have a sub, it is not worth it.
@ryanreyes54404 ай бұрын
Coming from a $600 Roku stream bar 5.1 the A9 didn’t feel like I got 3x the upgrade considering the price. The physics of these types of speakers won’t be the same as a typical home theater SS

Since there are 4 speakers included, could you purchase another 2 for rears or another set of surrounds?
@miserj3 ай бұрын
Nope. You’re limited to the 4 included speakers. The only speaker you can add to the system is one sub. Each speaker is marked Front Left, Front Right, Rear Right, and Rear Left and they have to be at those locations.

Can you do the Roku 5.1 Full surround sound set? This Combines two sets of Roku Wireless Speakers with Roku Streambar Pro and Roku Wireless Subwoofer for an ultra-immersive sound experience. And it is all under $700 for a full 5.1 wireless setup.

It would be interesting to see Sony build a high-powered floorstanding system (with built-in subwoofers) based upon this wireless and 360 degree surround technology. Obviously this would be even more expensive but I think there is a market for it.

I wish Sony would add traditional tone controls! Separate Treble, Bass, and sub-woofer level. I recently added the HT-A5000, RS5 rears and the SW3 to my A80J OLED TV. (All discounted now) I use this in my bedroom and have the RS5s to my sides. Using the 360 Sound Mapping adds an echo to dialog. I really hope Sony updates the ancient "Music Center" app. Thanks for the review.
