Hi Todderbert, appreciate the detailed overview and MW band scan on this radio! Your earlier review and band scan videos helped me decide on this radio instead of the D808. You aren't kidding about these being a bit hard to find. I was able to get one from ebay, but it was listed as a generic sounding "Compact World Band Clear Audio Radio w/ SSB and Popular Frequencies Coverage" instead of Digitech AR-1780. The listing description clarified it was the Digitech AR-1780 for sale, but I was a bit concerned as the images didn't show any Digitech branding on the radio itself. Thankfully, it was the AR-1780 in the box when the package arrived. I found out afterwards that you can get this radio from Jaycar US as well, although their images of the radio also lack the Digitech branding (except for the box). Anyways, keep up the good work!

hi and thanks for posting - I purchased the same radio about 4 weeks ago and just cant seem to get anything on MW/LW and only a few stations on SW using the attached antenna and dont have a clue what SSB is used for LOL other than living in the South Island of New Zealand I would love to know what I am doing wrong. Other than having a long wire out in the garden what would be the best portable internal / external antenna for the AR1780. Cheers Glenn v from NZ

Time of day, and watching the Solar Activity. Dusk/Dawn is good for SW/MW. SSB is good for those times as well when you are searching the band and hear duck sounding speech. Use it to clarify the HAM radio operators. You may hear people from around the globe.

Thanks for another nice video. Does anyone know which radio chip was used in this receiver?

T. Great review. What I'm looking for is the ideal travel radio to replace my heavily used and now out-of-service Sony ICF-SW1 and SW100... Which of the reviewed crop best favours? The PL-330 looks the best from reviewers, but I really cannot tell, given none 'appear' as slick (and quiet as costly back in the day!) as the Sony's.

I would look into the Eton Elite Executive: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4nVhX6upJyqqqM , and the XHData D-808: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3LPfampnNWfb9k . The Tecsun PL-330 is good, but lacks battery capacity, and does not have as much BW control.

@@todderbert Thanks for the reply T. Both of your suggestions are getting to be too large for my intentions. I backpack, bikepack and such, and the ICF SW1 and 100 have both served well being so compact, if not somewhat tinny. The priority is FM, LW, MW with a solid SW for fun and occational contact with BBC World Service etc. If not on FM here in the UK, its reachable on LW. Over in the US (often) PSR, MW and FM are always good enough. Would be nice to have DAB integrated into such a product, but yet to see it. The battery issue does concern me to much (however odd), though I'm pretty resigned on trips to carrying a reasonable power bank for my compact camera, phone and such... and I have a supply of BL5c per chance. Did consider the 310et, I wonder if that's enough... but the 330 looks to be an upgrade. By the way, both Sony's are potentially beyond the normal capacitor replacement repair. Sadly they have either speaker, display, potentially capacitor+ribbon and casing issues. If only Sony decided to continue the lineage... Any other suggestions?

@@grahamrowe6278 On the richer side of things, the C.Crane CC Skywave SSB, or the regular CC Skywave if you don't need SSB, or the entire SW band. Small, compact radios that run for up to Seventy Hours on 2-AAs. Also a cheaper alternative could be the Elpa ER-C57WR import from Japan that has Longwave and uses two AAs as well, and has an identical cabinet to the Skywaves. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqDNd5Z-lpKdfrs

Please review the difference with D808 someday.
@todderbert3 жыл бұрын
not much to say, one runs on AAs, has an Amber Side Light, Plastic Speaker Grill, Raised Buttons and a Shorter Tuning knob. These would be the features that are on the 1780 and not on the 808. Reception and internals are virtually identical.

Hi Todderbert, thanks for another great video. I have a question for you. I know you mention in one of your videos that some AA batteries are a bit shorter and a bit smaller diameter I think. Was it Panasonic?? Could you please tell me which are the smallest and thinnest? I’d be really grateful. I need to use them on my sony icf-sw100. I don’t yet have issues with the battery compartment cover but would like to avoid that problem. Thanks again for all you do. Best, Joe in CT

My Tenergy batteries seem to be the thinnest NiMHs. For Alkalines, Energizer seems to fit everything well.
