The Charity Cup is the 2nd of 9 events on the $1.6 million 2022 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour and takes place on chess24 from March 19-26. World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen tops the 16-player field, which will be cut in half by the 4-day round-robin Prelims. The total prize fund is $150,000, with $750 for a win and $250 for a draw in the Prelims. The quarterfinals and semi-finals are 1-day, 4-game matches, while the final will feature two such matches over two days.
The players have 15 minutes for all their moves, plus a 10-second increment starting from move 1. In the Prelims there are 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. If a tiebreak is required the players will play two 5+3 games and then, if needed, a single Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4, but a draw counts as a win for Black. No draw offers are allowed before move 40. Official website: chess24.com/tour

I am thinking if Chinese Chess Federation can organize a tournament for Ding plus 13 other players with double round robin format over April and May. This guarantees 26 games for Ding.
@mikoaj1349
@mikoaj1349 2 жыл бұрын
But wouldn't that be a bit dishonest? Top players, especially those aiming at the Candidates, generally play real, tough tournaments with other top-rated players. If a tournament were organised just for Ding and some weak players, that would be padding Ding's resume, not true chess. So if he's to qualify, I want to see him play against Caruana, Aronian, So, MVL and others from the top of the ranking list, not in some concocted pseudo-tournament with the Chinese second tier.
@jasonkenobi913
@jasonkenobi913 2 жыл бұрын
@@mikoaj1349 The rules dictate that the replacement should be the highest rated player on May's rating list provided they have 30 played games in a certain time span. There's nothing wrong with him playing such a tourney or even a 26 game match to meet the game quota provided his rating will still be high enough after.
@davidanderson_surrey_bc
@davidanderson_surrey_bc 2 жыл бұрын
@@jasonkenobi913 I think you're both correct... The Chinese COULD organize such a tournament and stay within the parameters, BUT it would be seen by many as a bit sketchy. And I believe that Ding, being the sportsman and gentleman he is, would decline to play in such an event.

+ Karjakin Banned From Chess - not discussed properly in the video: The FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission (EDC) has banned GM Sergey Karjakin for six months from participating as a player in any FIDE rated chess competition. The 32-year-old Russian grandmaster, who is a fierce supporter of Russian president Vladimir Putin, was punished for his recent statements on social media and will be missing out on this year's FIDE Candidates Tournament. The statements by Sergey Karjakin on the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine has led to a considerable number of reactions on social media and elsewhere, to a large extent negative towards the opinions expressed by Sergey Karjakin.

Karjakin should never have been banned from playing the candidates, his support for his country is something every American etc is taught to have in school and to be fair, chess as a whole isn't a place for politics, its a place for chess and chess alone. Everyone will have their own views publically and privately, the western world praises itself on freedom, in America our freedom to speech is something which is seen as our foundation to a truly free society. To punish someone for their views or words simply because you don't like what is said is no different than a dictator who controls the media of his country and pushes false narratives so his people never get to see the truth. Its not a world to which anyone who values freedoms should be hoping for. To think that a chess organization would take such a leap as to punish someone for standing by their country, and for voicing his opinion despite knowing the backlash they would receive from the majority. In many ways its a sign of bravery on that person's part to speak while knowing this fact. His public statements are in the minority, everyone is aware of this already therefore his statements don't harm the FIDE organization or the game of chess which the section FIDE referenced as reasoning behind his ban suggests. If his words didn't harm the game or FIDE then he should be allowed to play while suffering the consequence of his public made views personally. FIDE can disagree as an organization that's all fair and good but to go out of their way to punish its members who don't agree shows nothing short of a dictator type of mindset.

As you said, chess isn't a place for politics and that's precisely why he got banned - he shouldn't use their platform to promote politics, nobody should. The ban was not about his opinion, it was because he uttered it at all. Also, FIDE isn't american. It's an international organisation, founded by 15 nations that don't include the US. Initiator was France, headquarters is in Athen (Greece). So I don't know why they should adhere to american values. Which are illusionary at best anyway.
@DailyBanter96
@DailyBanter96 2 жыл бұрын
@@Puschit1 First off, he didnt use the FIDE platform, FIDE even stated it was his twitter posts that they banned him over. 2nd, The western world in general EU included all value freedoms and visions of society where freedom of the press and free speech is seen as a common human right. They don't do as Russia has done, arresting reporters and protestors for an unpopular or non-state driven agenda. 3rd. Its about the actual slippery context and what this implies for the future. Basically FIDE is making an atmosphere that's simply, you hold our values and beliefs politically, your country be damned. If we hear that you disagree, or that you publically post in a way we don't like then you will be banned from any chess events. This is a very dangerous thing to see, especially when you go back and realize Fischer despite all the hate against him, despite all his outlandish statements against female players and others making such sexist comments, FIDE ruled that as okay however suddenly standing with your country and holding the unpopular though patriotic view that your country is doing what is best is no longer going to be allowed. Even Magnus spoke out against FIDE's choice not to allow Qualifying Russian players attend the charity event.
