In reality the British as prisoners of war in Asia under the Japanese, suffered hugely. About 3o% died. Compare that to Americans under Germany as prisoners of war: three percent.

Your comparing apples and oranges., Compare US deaths in Japanese POW camps to British deaths. I think you will find all nationalities suffered greatly under the Japanese.

Pretty much everything Saito says about why he hates the British makes sense and Nicholson is a perfect example of it, he thinks that being a gentleman and sucker for rules applies during wartime.

I disagree vehemently. He was a brilliant and perfect example of the fact that rules DID apply, during the war, at least to those who were essentially decent people and inherent gentlemen. There was definitely a code of basic behaviour and treatment, despite the situation at hand. Nicholson upheld those values to prove, without a doubt, the civility, loyalty and honour of his men and the treatment they ought to receive.
