And a lot of Dionne early music was soft and subtle not too much power in it. Beautiful music but it had people think she didn’t have power until the 70’s & 80’s rolled around and Dionne was belting & holding long notes like crazy.

Oh she had plenty of Acrobatics. That sustained belt is a strength that many singers don't have. In fact, a lot of them hide behind the acrobatics when they run out of steam. It's a different aspect of vocal control that isn't appreciated as much in modern music. But Dionne excels in it.

Your analysis speaks of all Dionne Warwick's 'mechanical chops' of singing.,..yet when I listen to this song it's ALL about the emotional delivery. Dionne is telling us through pure emotional control a heartbreaking story of love and loss. She is a master at the emotional delivery. 'A master of conveying the pain in this song...from her experience I imagine. How' she pulls back or aspirates or moves her jaw is purely in service to telling us the secrets of love and loss. Dionne Warwick singing this song makes this the most heartbreakingly beautiful song I have ever heard.

Dionne has always been top of her class. A slew of the babies we love now as adults went to the school of Dionne. The story is similar to Toni's. Dionne was part of a group, and after hearing them sing, they were taken aback by Dionne's clarity and range. Dionne became the golden standard of what great ballads were, and she was under the wing of Burt Bacharach. A lot of people take her for granted because of the reality shows of today. She was a beast in her day, and she is still the standard when it comes to putting her stamp on songs like this!

Dionne was taught very well and is an accomplished pianist as well. People often relate her talent to cissy and whitney but Dionne’s aunts/uncles and mother were respectable vocalists in their own right. Her mom Is Arthur Lee Warwick who was actually offered a scholarship to the infamous Julliard school of music as an operatic Lyric Soprano. She actually grew up around Sarah Vaughn calling her aunt sass as her mother and sarah were friends and even mentioned to be her Godmother

I love this. Dionne sang this song in a way that the listener can sit with it as she tells the story. So enjoyable. Even as a child, I loved her music, it always sounded so modern to me.

Thank you for choosing this song of Dionne. This song is more personal to her in many ways than most people even know. And I am SO GLAD that you did the analysis! Listening to it again after 1963 when I was sixteen it brought me to tears because I felt just what she felt at that time...TO THE BONE!!

This is your best one ever. Jaron do you have a photographic memory or something?!?! You’re precision in the vocal playback, using your own voice, freaks me out (in the greatest way) So skillful! You picked out subtle visuals that accompany her vocals I would’ve never noticed before, like her lower jaw, specific techniques within the notes (mind blowing right there) that revealed the depth of her talent I never identified, let alone ever noticed before. Bravo 👏🏽 Queen Dione. And thank you Jaron for your keen insight ❤️

Okay listen…imagine my surprise when I found out Dionne was throwing down back in the day. I only saw it for Patti back then, but Babee…my mind was blown once I started watching more of her clips. I became her biggest fan almost 10 years ago. I started watching videos of her performances, and I was hooked!! During this time period (mid to late 70’s) I would say she was vocally killing it during her live performances. Majority of her performances during the 70’s is my favorite era of Dionne. I love the way Dionne tells the story. It’s like watching someone paint a masterpiece before your eyes. Last thing, the reason Dionne was able to do so much vocally, all while being a heavy smoker, is because she’s a technical trained singer. So of course she’s talented, but being a trained singer, you’re able to do so much with her voice, including sustaining CONTROL. Thanks for letting me rant. I LOVE Dionne!!
