I don't think that was Darrick's point. What he's saying is that Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote Alfie for Dionne to sing for the movie, but the movie studio wanted someone British to sing the title track. Hence, Cilla Black. But most of the songs Bacharach and David wrote back then were always songs for Dionne since she was the most successful interpreter of their music.

This woman knows how to interpret a lyric. She's a master. Many modern singers rely solely upon runs to interpret a song. IMO, mindless riffing, no matter how extravagant and deftly executed, will never be as moving as improvisations that are connected to the story you are telling. Learning to do runs without "running" away from the lyric is the key.

Thank you so much for the analysis. I met Dionne when I was 16 years at Leo's Bar in Cleveland at a rehearsal for our East Tech High Talent Show. Back then I only sang her songs and I mean all of them and Alfie was the one I sung and she happened to be singing at the club that night. I got a chance to meet her in her dressing room. Needless to say I was speechless. She was the personification of sweetness, elegance and grace. I'm 76 years old now and I love her still. Don't sing anymore because of vocal damage but I have so many memories of when I could. Thank you for your encouragement to others who have the gift of voice.

I don't want to go down a path of comparison because every artist brings something unique to the table but I'm not sure if its due to the family connection or studying Dionne from a young age but Whitney had a similar ability to really take a song/lyrics/melody to places that were necessary for the story to be told. Whitney and Dionne could if they wanted to take a song here there and everywhere, up down and in and out and display their incredible abilities but do it with the mindset of telling a story and that is the key to a great artist, leaving your ego at the door and doing what is necessary for the words and not your ego.

And I mean ANYTHING! Dionne vocal range was huge not just in demonstration of how high or low she could sing but in terms of genres she can sing. Her solid gold covers solidified that. People tend to not really take notice to her unless you are a true student of the art but she always serve the song rather than display all her gifts in one setting like her contemporaries and thats what make her so unique. She is a textbook singer and can take you on a ride with her interpretive skills. Her knowledge of music theory makes her that much technical where she can sing un and out of the melody and it just makes sense. And Yes you can see her all over Luther and Whitney.

Hmm...that is one way of describing it. Cynthia's Alfie version was clearly about her being bigger in the moment because I think it was about showcasing and exalting another (tribute to Dionne). There are very obvious moments that Cynthia shows a subtlety and restraint that lets me know that she could also have taken this more subdue jazz approach. But she chose not to and it better fit the moment (award ceremony at the Kennedy Center). What we know from hearing both songs is CONTROL. Cynthia has is and so does Dionne. And both know how to use it to fit the moment.

14:28 i LIVE for ""imperfections"" in songs. ESPECIALLY in musicals where there is acting involved. For me, I prefer passion over perfection. this reminds me of I'm a Mean Ole Lion from The Wiz! I love how at the end his voice cracks during the big belt, he laughs, and then clears his throat at the end. I assume that was improv, but it still adds so much more character to the song for me. It really plays to his unserious nature as the Cowardly Lion which I appreciate immensely. That's a real skill to be able to use those accidents when you're in character, or in the moment like that.

I would say, Not so much Technical is always needed when singing! She's having a conversation with you..She's asking you a question "what's it all about? Thanks! That’s the big glaring thing missing from the analysis offered above: lyric interpretation! All the vocal instruction and technique in the world doesn’t produce a performance like Dionne’s. Because she started out singing professionally doing background work, she developed excellent technical skills. (And prior to that, her family singalongs and steady church choir and gospel singing.) So she had “chops”, she had an “ear”, and the kind of vocal mastery that comes from singing DAILY since toddler days. But… Dionne’s true excellence as a PERFORMER in this video of “Alfie” is about her ability with lyrics, and the storytelling. She is not just producing a series of random (albeit sublime) sounds. Like the great singers she herself admired (Lena Horne and Sinatra among them), she was invested in phrasing - singing THOUGHTS, not just NOTES. It’s not always about HOW you sing a note or phrase, but more importantly, WHY. The voice teacher is so focused on the HOW, he is seemingly unable to figure out why he is so transported by her singing, and it’s because she is conveying a MESSAGE with Hal’s lyrics. This performance was from a TV special in the mid-1970s, when Dionne’s marriage broke up. She had already recorded the song about 7 or 8 years earlier, so it was already a “part of her”… but now, she had a personal story behind it, and a REASON to sing it. Great singing isn’t just about producing sounds - it’s about taking control of those sounds to EXPRESS something. And this version of “Alfie” - and her equally sublime “All in Love is Fair” from around the same time period - demonstrate the exquisite results of VOCAL TECHNIQUE married to SUBTEXT (acting the lyric). Her technical facility allows her to go wherever she spontaneously wants to go IN THE MOMENT. And she famously never sings her songs the same way twice.

Thanks for talking about how our voices are human voices and they do human voice things! I get ashamed of my voice also because I don't really know if I'm a soprano or alto. People have told me different things, and I try them both and feel I'm somewhere in between because I'm not sure if the perimeters of my range sound good.
