It’s amazing to see and hear how all those songs had evolved compared to alchemy 3 years later. Boys were experimenting with all of them to see what worked the best at the end. Amazing concert. Thank you DS for posting this !!

Almost every track on Alchemy is from their first four earlier studio albums. Like the live recordings of most bands the sound quality is poor. Alchemy (aka: Dire Straits Live) was recorded live at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on 22-23 July 1983, and was the final two concerts of the 70 stadiums in 20 weeks world-wide Love Over Gold Tour. Alchemy was released in 1984 and sold well so Vertigo then signed them for one more album which was Brothers In Arms which was released in May 1985. Brothers was more commercial and rushed, and by that time they were running short of quality material to record. The sound quality of Brothers is excellent, but musically I consider it lacking the depth of Communique (released 1979) and Love Over Gold (released 1982) which IMO were not rushed and are DS at their best. On a different note, the best live album I have ever heard is Made In Dublin by Aslan. The album is all original material but the CD also includes a cover of Angie (Rolling Stones) and whilst I don't usually like covers or re-works, IMO Aslan's version of Angie has much more feeling than the original. Search YT for "Aslan - Made in Dublin, Live At Vicar Street". Well worth a listen !

The second performance I was referring to was the video uploaded just prior to this on the official Dire Straits youtube channel, namely the live recording of Tunnel of Love from the Old Grey Whistle Test. This incarnation of the band, with Mark, John, Pick, Alan and Hal is my favourite. After Pick left, their drum sound in live performances lost something and became too bombastic for my liking. This incarnation just had much more subtlety and restraint, and just sounded better overall imho. But each to their own I guess. All the best, and again sorry for not getting back sooner.

Great to discover a live version of Sultans of Swing with a solo somehow "in between" the record version and that epic versions with saxophone later on

This concert was not long after Hal and Alan joined the band. There is a structure in the Sultans’ solo that does bear some similarities to what we have heard in all its glory in Alchemy. Interesting to see the development over three years as they spent more time playing together. I’ve got to say they’re already pretty tight as a band at this point. There’s a good reason many fans like myself think the 1980-84 lineup was the best.

If I am not wrong, the second guitarist is Hal Lindes. He had just replaced David Knopfler. AFAIK the full keyboard set was just introduced for the first time in their live shows. Alan Clarck had just joined the band as well.
