Hopefully you now understand that the song is about a couple guys bumming about the fact that they must perform all this manual labor while the guys on MTV get to play their guitars and get chicks for free.
@fleetskipper18104 жыл бұрын
It’s also a clever bit of satiric self-mockery. They were the guys moving refrigerators and color TVs for a living, working for low wages to pay the bills while hoping to make it playing nights in the music industry. When they finally did, their fans thought that what they did was too easy.

MTV (the station) was completely different when this song was born. Back then it was pretty much all music videos, hence Music TV. I don’t even know why it’s called MTV anymore. Just saying so younger people understand that those sales people were watching music videos.
@jjc54075 жыл бұрын
@@racinnut77's right. Sting only gets a writing credit on this song because Mark wanted to use the tune from the song "Don't stand so close to me" he wrote and recorded as a member of The Police. ("I want my, I want my, I want my MTV" = "Don't stand so, don't stand so, don't stand so close to me".) When the band were recording the Brothers in Arms album in Montserrat they found out Sting was on holiday there and Mark invited him over to sing on the song.

@mikebetts20465 жыл бұрын
Mark Knofler does a decent job articulating the lyrics, but for a first pass, it's probably best to read the lyrics to make sure you are getting the gist of the song. It's not that EVERY dire straits song is deep, but the lyrics typically tell an interesting story. A great long song by them is Telegraph Road. Great music and story.

Not sure if it'll raise any copyright issues or red flags for KZbin, so perhaps on your own time & off camera, check out the official music video for this song. It was groundbreaking when it premiered in 1985, as it was one of the first ever to utilize computer graphics & animation. This was back in the day of CGI infancy so when the video aired on MTV (back when the channel actually played music videos), no one had ever seen anything like it before. By today's standards it probably comes off as very cheesy but it's still a fun video to watch and it will clearly explain the lyrics of this song more... :-)
