Awesome, as others have said, you sir are a genius! I had just replaced the coupler on my old whirlpool/Kenmore washer but when I fired up the spin cycle and stopped it, it stopped with a bang like you said. A dab of vasoline and now it stops smoothly like before. Great video!

Dont put grease on it. Hold the tub while it starts to spin and slowly let it get up to speed. Them release the lid switch. If it still abruptly stops do it again. Never put grease on the brake. Ive been fixing these for over 22 years.

The problem Im having is the tub bearing seems locked up. When you pushed that lever brake counter clockwise your tub spun fine. Mine wont. Motor was smoking. What is that part called? The brake pads do open but wont spin like it locked. Thanks for your videeos.

My Kenmore washer suddenly started making a loud banging noise at the start of the spin cycle, but it doesn't spin. Another video I watched said it is likely the coupler.

What is the belt around the brake drum @1:44 used for? Where is it attached to? Hope someone has an answer, I've searched and not seen anyone mention it, what is its purpose? Thanks in advance.

It's a sound dampener for the brake drum. It has no other function and there's no harm if it's missing.

What if you can’t remove the brakes from the washer? Mine will come out a few centimeters then stop. I can’t pull it out all the way. I also can’t remove the washer tub. It lifts a little bit but feels like something is holding it in place. I can turn the tub but I can’t get it out either.

Another cause of these Whirlpool direct drive washers slamming to a stop is the spanner nut on the drive block is too tight. The spanner nut gets tighter and tighter over time...Then eventually the tub begins to slam while braking. Loosen the spanner nut on the drive block and the tub will coast to a stop.

@@arturosifuentes7506 ... I don't have a picture, but if you remove the washer's agitator, you will see the spanner nut which is attached to the drive block.

@@arturosifuentes7506 Don't loosen the spanner nut. Part of its function is to clamp the drive block securely to the spin drive shaft. The block has two notches that mate to two ears integral to the top of the drive shaft. The drive block can slip off the ears if the whole assembly isn't secure, which can damage the ears of the drive shaft and/or the notches of the drive block and cause problems that require replacement of those parts.

Hello. I have a Kenmore 70 washer and it is extremely loud during the agitation cycle only. The dogs were good but I changed them anyways however it is still loud. It runs smooth and is quiet during spin cycle. Would you happen to know what it could be?

that sudden STOP/BANG actually broke the transmission housing on our washer. It was worth buying new transmission because the new machines are over priced junk in my opinion

I have been using my washer from the day i bought it in 07 so i'm thinking the brake shoes are worn but it never hurts to try the grease first!

What would cause a direct drive washer to not release the brakes after a wash or rinse cycle? The machine will not spin unless I manually rotate the tub counterclockwise many revolutions until it spins freely. Then it will go into spin mode just fine. I have replaced the entire basket drive and clutch.

There is something between the inner and outer tub. Take the sock or what ever got in there out and it will be like brand new!
