Direct to PHONE Recording using TRRS cable

I got the trrs (3 ring adapter) and connected it from my mixer headphones output I make sure there's sound coming out but nomatter what I do it doesn't work I use it with open camera and put all the settings like people explain external mic and the level meter on I put the volume low,mid,high but all I get is the sound in my surroundings it's been a difficult task to do.
