Mikey Mike you are a wonderful teacher. This should be a training video for everyone getting bi-lat. I’d always heard that only one knee could be done at a time. Love your cane techniques. I’ll probably join your club in the next few years. All those years playing volleyball, basketball & softball (as a shortstop) is starting to manifest in my knees. You rock, Laine in NJ

I had both of mine at the same time. My doctor said he would do both only because I was a nurse and knew what to expect. My CPM was my best friend. I was driving myself to PT and not using a walker at 12 days. I had surgery on Dec 1st and I cooked Christmas dinner for 18 by myself. My first PT visit I was at 110 flexion. I finished at 120. I walked frequently and was going upstairs at 14 days. 10 yrs later, I’m still at 120 degrees. I believe in thinking you can and you can!!

I'm almost 3 weeks out, pain is manageable but I'm happy to have a new knee, I woke up yesterday and had a great day but still with pain, I still sleep in my recliner not in my own bed . Wished w/c would have done TKR last year but I'm making gains . Last night I'm up to 90 flexion when I started first day home barely could do 35 . Thing I'm not liking is it's like the gains I make at therapy and home when I do get sleep n wake next morning, lose lot of the gains. Doctor says it will be that way for at least two months, but said that will go away , most people after couple weeks give up. I'm not stopping, can't , I have things my family expects/ needs me to do. So I'm praying n pushing hard at therapy , this is my final chance for a better life than limping around with half torn meniscus Root. If an old fat man like me can do it You can too. I'm 6'2 375

Do your rehab don't quit as it will help you stay motivated and help you recover quicker. The first couple of weeks are not easy. You will be uncomfortable but stay in your pill regimen the Dr gives you. After that with your routine you will find you are starting to get around a lot better. I was walking un-aided at 10 days but it was just a few steps to see progress. Stay focused and work hard and you will be up and around 60 days after and while there is still work to do to keep getting stronger you will be happy you had the surgery. Good luck !

I’m on my 7th day of rehab right now after a total arthroscopic right knee replacement surgery just 10 days ago, and I think I’m much farther ahead of what this shows. Today I have little if any pain (only after the PT and OT, can lift my leg up onto the bed without any aid, and the icing everyday after PT/OT has helped immensely and has led to more rapid healing. And today, just the 10th day after surgery, I’ve already negotiated going up and down 5 stairs. It was rough going and soreness for 4 days after surgery, but I could not be more pleased with my progress on day 10.

I had my right knee done in 2012, never healed and had a revision in 2015, still had problems. 2019 a new doctor removed the old knee and put in a different type of knee replacement and I was able to get out of my hospital bed to go to the bathroom as soon as I woke up from surgery. The next morning I went to PT, walked up stairs, rode a bike, got in and out of fake car, went back to my room and got dressed and went home. When it’s done correctly you recover quickly. Three weeks later I went back to my surgeon and told him I didn’t want any more physical therapy and since I had 2 of my grandkids with me and was babysitting, he agreed!🤣🤣

Thank you so much for your video. I had a right total knee replacement 9 weeks ago. I had a rough reaction to opiods. Tylenol or tramadol don't seem to help, nor inflammation creams. I get painful spasms at night, my left knee and right hip are also in pain. I was told its because they are compensating for my right knee. I can walk on my own short distances but not without the lower knee pain, hip pain later or severe knee pain at the end of the day. Ice seems to help but I still have a lot of heat on my knee that gets agravated at night. The knee heat and pain won't let me sleep and I toss and turn awake all night. I think you are a brave man and seeing you move after 2 knee surgeries give me hope. I admire your strenght. Everyone keeps saying I'll get better, so I hope I will. My knee is still bent, the inflammation does not allow me to bend it but I am hopeful.

Brilliant! Thank you, Mike, for this amazing video. I don't know HOW you did both knees at once. I have had two knee replacements on my right Leg. The first one failed after two years and had to be revised entirely. I am 8 weeks post-op from my first knee replacement on my left knee. I had some complications. The tourniquet caused induration and infiltration, soft tissue damage that was super painful. After three weeks of intractable 8 and 9-level pain, I considered ending my life. I am glad that darkness has passed. I am nearly nine weeks post-op and back to my volunteering. I am 61 and usually active. Thank you for your super video. YOU are one tough man. Thanks Mike , I’m six weeks out of left knee replacement surgery . I’m at 125 degree and completely flat . Went to a great surgeon . Outpatient , believe it or not . Went home with an opioid . ( which I took 1 ) got a bad reaction to it and stopped right then . Used the aspirin for a month and extra strength Tylenol and of course ice and rest . Hardest thing for me was and still is getting comfortable sleeping . I was told this is normal. The bad swelling is gone . Still ankle throbs at night in bed . Been walking in my own since a day 3. Had the cake handy in case . The walker was for the first 2 days . Robotically done so muscle or tendons cut through . Just some nerves and the post leg bone healing for the Legs of the robotic arm . I strongly suggest this method . I had the right one done 14 yea ago and it was barbaric in comparison . Pain was 5 times worse cutting you open to butterfly the muscles and tendons . Was in the hospital on a morphine drip for a day and a blood tube plus a catheter . It’s still very stable though so I guess no pain No gain ? Good luck all!

Pre operative physio is very important to have your hamstring, quadriceps and adductor muscles in their best shape. I have both knees done, though years apart, one partial knee replacement (Avon Procedure) and one total. Partial now 18 years done and it’s was much better from the get go than the TKR surgery of 3 years ago. On the TKR I got a very bad infection and a bleed, day two post op, 16 months of physio still have a small % deficiency for a straight leg. Bad pain for 10-12 seconds “everytime” I go from a seated to a standing position. You never realise how often you do this action in your daily life until it is marked by pain. Unfortunately I am highly allergic to all pain medication ( just my luck) I use ice and heat for pain relief. I do exercise in water to keep from seizing up. The only thing you can do is just keep going. Giving in any and just lying on the couch or in bed will not help. My sports were running, sailing and horse riding but my Ortho surgeon told me even after my first surgery absolutely “no” high impact loading of any kind allowed in the future so couldn’t get back to any of these activities. Hope you have a great recovery and get back to your kitesurfing. Hopefully stem cells options for knee therapy will be offered to all instead of the brutal open surgery we have now.

I have bilateral knees and I'm 26 years out. At that time the procedure was a lot different. Not only the surgeons quality, my success was the PT. It was brutal but I cannot say strongly enough the importance of having terrific mobility, range of motion and complete absence of pain. I visited the facility [Orthopedic Center of the Rockies in Fort Collins, Colorado] and because the doctor that did the surgery was long since retired, the doctor I saw said he would see me back in five years. I'll be 80 then. Your body lets you know when you're ready for the surgery. The pain finally gets to be more than you can handle. Finding someone that was willing to do bilateral knee replacement was kind of a challenge. I live in Nebraska and the local doctor had only done a few. My surgeon did four sets that day of my surgery. No brainer as to who to choose.

I had a full knee replacement nearly 2 yrs ago & i still cannot bend or straighten it, my surgeon said he cudnt do anything furthur for me, i have still to this day ongoing pain & spasms, swelling, all he recommended was to go for pain injections which to me was avoiding the issue of finding out why i was in so much pain.To this day i cannot mobilise without a walker, as i dnt have a good range of movement. So i asked for a 2nd opinion, got a different surgeon who is willing to investigate in my knee by doing keyhole surgery to remove any scar tissue & see if he can fix it if not i will need revision surgery.
@directsound9 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear that! I have heard that and my surgeon told me he might have to do the same for me as I still have a bit of pain most likely due to scar tissue. I still have some swelling if i overdo it but not too bad. still cant get on my kneed but I have great ROM. its all about moving after you have the redo! i know it hurts but you got this!!!!!

You are a very brave man to have both knees replaced at the same time . You know there a device that attaches to the toilet and has arms that adjusts so hold on to to raise and lower yourself , but you did a great job with the Walker ! Take care and God bless 🙏

I have severe back problems and last year I fractured my knee cap. Life savers for me were a clip on toilet seat raiser, actually clips on to the pan and plenty of room for an ample butt. Before that my kids were having to lift me on and off the loo. Also at night for peeing a female urinal bottle by the bed. Us gals have to stand to use it but saves a trip to the bathroom at night when you might be groggy and fall. Takes a bit of getting used to and I kept a hand towel handy incase I had any problems. Take care and God Bless.

The intense pain is real the first two weeks. I would never do both knees at once. I get around with no assistance now. Post op seven weeks, I am dealing with terrible insomnia. PT has helped a lot. I still elevate my knee and ice it. Amazing how pain curbs your appetite. I have lost 20 lbs. in six weeks. Stay on top of the pain with the prescribed medications. Don't wsit until you have pain!

Thank you so much for this video. I am scheduled for bilateral surgery in 6 months. I still have time to change that to just one at a time. The positive comments of those who had bilateral surgery were encouraging. I hate being indecisive about it and am praying for guidance and wisdom. I like the efficiency of getting it over and on with life, but I don't want to be naive.

You are very brave! I had my right knee done exactly 4 weeks ago, and just rescheduled my left for same time next year. I was going to do them three months apart, but I have decided that I want to give my body enough time to heal. I admire people that can do it both at the same time, you are very very tough! My right knee was 80° flexion with limited motion, and 26° extension. I am now at 8° extension, and 105° flexion. I am not expected to get to 120° flexion, but I am shooting for it! Once I get my left knee done, and heal from that, I'm going to actually feel my age, which I haven't in a decade or so. Thank you so much for posting this video!

Late 2013 I got both knees replaced 6 weeks apart, The 1st week is the worst, after that I was taken off the walker and just used a cane, I was even able to walk upstairs using the cane, and two weeks after surgery I was able to drive to the physical therapist's office; I took the Physical Therapy seriously and worked really hard, My doctor told me it was important to walk a lot, so at first it was all I could do to just walk to the mailbox and back, but I kept increasing the distance each day until I was walking 6 miles, then 10 miles and even as much as 12 miles. It's been 9 years now and I've never had any trouble with my knees since, and I can't even tell that I have artificial knees. The only limitation I can tell is that it requires some adjusting to ride a bicycle because my knees don't bend as sharply as original.

I had my right knee done 19 days ago. I found t 24:09 hat sleeping in a recliner helped me a lot. I couldn’t get my knee comfortable in bed. I’m going to give it another few days before trying the bed again. I’m using a cane now instead of the Walker. Some of the exercises are worse than the surgery especially the heel slides.

Thank you so much for this video. The tips, tricks, and especially the equipment recommendations are great. After waiting way longer than I should I got them both done this week. Now on Day 4 and generally it’s been brutal, but other than first thing in the morning, not overwhelming. My PT is amazed that I was so prepared for them. I must say that the trapeze is the ticket! Not sure how I would function without it! Thanks again for this series!

Hang in there! It will all get better with time. the worst thing was sleep and trying to get your PT done. Keep at it and keep that range of motion good that's the best thing for your recovery pain is there but you had pain before so use a lot of ice and keep the swelling down even to this day I way overdo it but I seem to be doing OK. One knee seems to be better than the other but but that's only because I have 1 compare it to. Give this again would I do both at the same time damN I don't know, kind of psycho¡ OK best luck on your recovery have a great night get some sleep I know you can't but get some sleep anyway.🌴🤙

@@directsound thanks, yeah, swelling is about the biggest enemy right now. I’ve read that since I had big swelling issues before surgery, that knee is even more prone to swell now. It’s day 7 and I able to get around pretty well. Walked to end of the block yesterday and actually walking is about the easiest activity. I would have been in huge pain had I made that walk just over a week ago. Hitting 0 degrees in both knees is easy, one is up to 101 and the other is almost 90. Amazes me how you tube works. I am also really trying to get well because I am moving up to TN where I have bought a home on the water and looking forward to a retirement on the water as much as possible. I’ve also spent the last 25 years in the lighting business and your Chauvet vids are cool as I’ve been a Chauvet Professional rep for years. Cool to learn more about their DJ tools. I’ve been more focused on the Chamsys stuff. Thanks!

Do your therapy is a must. My therapist discouraged the walker you are using, used the walker without wheels. Need high rise toilet seat. Need a caretaker the first 2 weeks is a must.
