Disassembling & Cleaning The 1992 Kenmore 70 Series, Part Two

I decided it was time to take the 92 Kenmore out and clean it up.
Part Two shows reassembly after having both "completed" (though not really) the neutral drain replacement, as well as having cleaned all the parts and hoses out.
These videos I just sort of left the camera rolling so there'd be less back and forth stopping and starting the camera. Lots of cutting through the video to eliminate the lesser important parts of the video for time reasons as well as background music reasons. I also didn't have the parts for my tripod at the time to be able to use it, and the battery for my camera needed to be plugged in at the time, so this series I was limited on how many camera angles I could get. This was one of those series where I feel it would have helped to have someone else film while I did all this.

That seemed to go back together without much trouble at all. I like the idea of pressin the middle of the clip, that bends out the "hook" at the end to catch over the pump and the motor. And speaking of the motor clips--the elusive motor clip screws! I have seen many machines without those! I think they stopped using them after a while, but even on ones that are supposed to have them, if they had the machine serviced at one point or another, those screws were conveniently not put back. Too bad you get to do the job over again. But hey, you've learned your leson, and will gain even more experience taking it apart and putting it back together again, so it's not all bad.

Don't remember how I learned that one, but somebody on the 'chubes, more than likely. Funny you mention the motor clip screws; as I later discovered, my 1986 Kenmore 60 series doesn't even have those from the factory! There aren't even holes drilled out for them, it's just the clips by themselves as it would be for the pump clips. Yep, that's the best way to look at it all!

Interesting the motor coupler appears to be original. I believe they changed the design in the mid or late 90s to include the metal insert, which was designed to break instead of the gearcase.

Those older couplers were very rigid on the plastic pieces. No metal insert is better because the most of the ones I've seen that DO have the metal inserts in them usually end up rounding out, which in turn, will round out the motor shaft or the transmission shaft. Case in point: xjoe81x's Kenmore 80 series. I also have a drivetrain that I saved from a 90 series Kenmore that was being thrown out (I don't have room for another machine, otherwise I would have just saved the whole thing.) That one had a metal-reinforced coupler which had rounded out and ended up rounding out the transmission shaft along with it.

How does the agitator move back and forth? Does the motor reverse which way it turns really fast or does the transmission do something that makes it move clockwise then counter clockwise?

The motor runs in one direction for agitation and then the other direction for spin. During agitation, the transmission is what does the oscillating for the agitator by the use of a connecting rack gear which rotates in an eccentric motion to drive the gear currently attached to the agitator shaft. When neutral drain arrives, a cam follower/actuator shifts the gear on the agitator shaft to disengage the agitator, so that the agitator will not turn during neutral drain or spin.

Also how does the top part of the agitator look like it’s just spinning?

The agitator in this machine is two-piece. The bottom piece is of course what moves back and forth while the top spins forward by a ratcheting mechanism inside of there. Four little agitator dogs ride and clutch into a wall of teeth in the top part of the agitator and cause it to only move one way, sort of like a corkscrew. The spirals on the top part work to "corkscrew" the clothes down to the bottom where they get agitated by the bottom.

@@lizboz Yeah I know that, but it usually stops then moves again when the bottom piece is moving counter clockwise, bow come in this video the top is just spinning without stopping lkke that?

@StuffStudier Some did that, some didn't. According to KZbinr Sharkie626, the Whirlpools did it more often than the Kenmore ones. I think it has to do with the condition of the thrust washer that sits in between the top and bottom sections, as well as how clean the thing is through all the crevices. But also, this video, I just had it running with water. If there were clothes in there, it would have had more resistance on it to stop it between each index.
