Dear Sailing Supernova couple. 👍👌👏 Hooray ! 🙌 You reached 20.000 subscribers. Congratulations! 🎉 In my opinion this channel is quite a bit underrated. To me you are the 2 most positive/friendly/nice/pleasant/likeable human beings on youpipe 💚💚. In my wishful thinking you should already have at least 50 thousand subs. 2) Congratulations 🎉 again! This time for catching 4 yummy yellow fin tunas in a row. I was so very much hoping that you would be able to catch something. But it simply didn't happen for weeks and weeks. I am even more so happy for you (and Coco) now. 3) Hope you can sort out the fuel problem easily. I totally agree with you, that a thicker/bigger fuel line is neccassary. Please kindly allow me to suggest that you put a kind of strainer filter before the actual fuel filter (at least if something like that isn't already there). Hope that you will be able to clean out the Diesel tanks well. It won't be a nice job but it obviously needs to be done. Once the rank(s) are clean, your life will be much easier. 4) Aruba is a big cocoa producer. I guess that you will enjoy a lot of chocolate. As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and especially health to you and the Darkhorse crew.

Btw, good idea for regular boat checklist is printing out paper with all the things you need to do with blank check boxes. Then laminate that and with simple non-permanent marker you can reuse that same paper multiple times. You could even add couple blank lines into it so it's easy to add few extra tasks if needed with permanent marker. This is really good if you are tired, or just forget. Or lets say you do something, and you partner can see you have done it without waking you up. You can have different lists for different uses or time spans. Though mainly, this is best for something you need to do regularly, say setting sail or something since it's handier than using phone or something. Ofc, you could also have whiteboard, separate or integrated as some surface in the boat. Main benefit to this is that unlike digital checklist, it's always visible and easier to access. Obviously, also good for todo list.

I am so impressed. You guys are doing so well. You have problems, you solve them. You catch tuna, you try to not let the kitty eat it all. Ha ha. When I made the passage from Aruba to Cartagena, we had winds 25-35. We didn’t have the weather info that you do now. All we had was a voice report over SSB. Very sketchy reports. You really planed it well. Didn’t care for Aruba. But the next stop if Curaçao you will love. A real Dutch community. And of course, Bonaire well known for it’s diving. Diving in Aruba so so. Curacao good. 52:04

If you do end up going into your fuel system/tank, I would personally recommend adding a separate fuel pick up so each engine is totally independent vs. the “T” connection.

I totally agree with longer watches. I am not a sailor so I never did understand the 3 or 4 hour shifts. If you dont get some REM sleep you might as well not sleep at all. But I wondered if I just didnt know something about why they needed to be so short. Congrats on the 20K subscribers! May you hit that over and over and over again.

We are with you, we hated the 4 hour watch, it was so hard to get up and we were thinking that this can't be our lives for the next 10 or more years. After that we went to 6 hours then 8, and very shortly we were at 12. It just works so much better for 2 people, there is so much flexibility with a 12 hour shift. We think the 12 hour shift is a huge reason why we love being on passage so much! But we also don't know what we are doing haha and there could be a great reason that we don't know about to do 4 hour shifts

Congrats on the 20k! 🥳 Would you guys be able to do a "This is how we enter a new country" video? Like what planning needs to be done? is there much paperwork/online forms? Can you just sail to a new country and call in and have them check you in or do you need to make reservations? Would it be possible to ask customs to have a mock check in one day where you'd be able to film the process? Sorry for all of the questions, it just looks so easy and my anxiety spikes every time I think about the unknowns in my future travels haha
@sailing.supernova
@sailing.supernova Ай бұрын
I wish we could do that. We ask every time if we could film and they all say no. What I can tell you is its really easy to check in places for the most part. You need your boat paperwork and your passport, and some places want a bit more like a zarpe or exit document from the last country you were in. Some country's like Mexico require you to temporally import your boat to the country. We were really nervous about how check in was going to work and what if we did something wrong but after you have done your first 2 or 3 you will see that its not that big of a deal. there are websites like Noonsite.com that have basic check in details for almost every country and they can give you a good idea of what is needed. The only challenge is finding out where you have to go. sometimes its just one person you have to talk to sometimes its 3 but they are all in the same office or building, and other times you will be walking all over town haha. The main thing to remember is you are not the first person checking into a country so you will meet tons of people who were just in the country you want to go to, and they will tell you everything you need to know. If you have any other questions just let us know :-)

@@sailing.supernova if those rubber chunks are white then that is growth. A fuel polishing system will not stop growth. Some fuel additives slow it down. Darcy I think you should try to find a fuel polishing company in Aruba instead of cutting a hole in the floor of your boat to get to the fuel tank.

We have a fuel polishing system on board, The problem is we have big chunks of stuff in the fuel tank that we picked up in Alaska, we have tried just about everything, but we have found wood chips and big globs of rubber in our fuel lines. We think there is a bunch of stuff in the tank that is just to big to fit in the fuel pick up line.

We are planning two weeks of boat jobs! We are leaving the fuel system to run off of a jerry can till we get the parts in to fix it right This way we know we have good fuel and can't have the same problem.

Its really not safe to carry the dinghy on the davits at sea. Put it on the deck for passages in the open ocean.
@sailing.supernova
@sailing.supernova Ай бұрын
Darcy Built the davits so we could carry the dinghy there even in big waves, each davit can hold more then 5 times the weight of the boat, and when working on the solar there was Darcy and another person in the dinghy when it was up. We also have it tied down really well back there so it doesn't move at all :-)
@deerfootnz
@deerfootnz Ай бұрын
@sailing.supernova still not safe. Water is 1000kg/m³ abd when it's falling into the dinghy at 60kmh the force is extreme. I came to this conclusion after a very bad experience in the Gulf of Mexico where the davits absolutely were strong enough but they tore a 1m² hole in the deck which became a major issue. It's a bad idea. I have davits at the stern of my boat. They are high and solid. I always carry the dinghy strapped to the deck just aft of the mast upside down. It's just not worth the risk as I have learned the hard way.

Why don't you upwind sail instead of running the engines? Yes I understand there would be a lot of sail changes but isn't that sailing? I'm very curious.
@sailing.supernova
@sailing.supernova Ай бұрын
We were trying to catch a very small weather window, and it was 100% upwind, if we would have went under sail it would have taken 2 times as long and we would have missed the weather window. That area of Colombia is famous for its high wind and huge waves, and when the wind picks up its not a safe place, and we were not going the recommended way. So in short for safety reasons we needed to go fast!

The wind was always right on the nose, so if we had put up sails and tacked back and forth it would have taken a long time. We had to hit the weather window or it would have been very dangerous seas. The current was also going the wrong way at 1.5 knots. We do sail when ever possible but we just couldn't make fast enough time because it was 100% up wind.

We saved up for years and years, before we met we were both saving to travel, And our Insurance is cheap because we can't get full coverage on our boat so we just have liability on the boat, we also do 100% of our own boat work. Its really cheap to live out here until something breaks :-)

Congrats on 20K. I really do love you guys, but you’re the laziest bunch of “sailors” I have ever seen. What a terrible example to young folks today. I know you love promoting “chasing your dreams”, but you’re the laziest will get yourself killed out there pushing of critical repairs. At some point YOUR LUCK WILL RUN OUT. The best thing for you guys is to chase a different dream, get a van or buy a new boat that has fewer issues. Then, when they do show themselves, dock that boat and fix it. I love guys too much not to say something. I say it with peace and love.

We are planning to do a bunch of boat work soon (and we have done heaps in the past year), we have answered this in similar comments you left on other videos. We answer all comments so you only need to write the same comment once for us to see it :-) We like sailing so we are going to stick with it, we don't have money for a new boat, we got what we could and we are going to make the best of it, Things break when you sail around, and we tend to move around more than most people. most of the time we have the parts to fix stuff, but some times we need to order in parts. The fuel tank is a big job, it was never done right when it was changed, we have to cut the whole cockpit floor to do it, but we will when we get the parts.
