Tbh I think the film would have benefited from the idea that the parents knew he was a mermaid and hid it from him. It would be cliche to some extent but it would also make some things less bad like their lack of concern for his symptoms. I also don’t get the electric aspect at all. They should’ve done more to avoid that one. 😂

Disney is the master of overusing the trope where adults constantly dismiss obscure and unusual behavior as simply being a symptom of puberty and frankly I don’t understand how they didn’t expect that to terrify kids

Wait, wait, wait. So, all these crazy things start happening once Cody turns 13. Starting right on his birthday. How do his "adoptive" parents - a.k.a. the parents who stole a baby from the middle of the ocean - know his birth date, to begin with? 😂 I feel like Disney didn't even try to make this movie make sense.

I’d assume they’d have an idea because of how old he was when they found him. Like they probably wouldn’t be right on the dot but they could at least get within the month? Or they could just call the day they found him his birthday.

As an American introducing my British boyfriend to DCOM's for the first time, I've never in my life felt the shame that I did when it came time to show him 'Luck of the Irish'😭😭😂 there have been a few other rough ones as well, but having to see the reaction to 'Luck of the Irish' from someone who has Irish relatives and grew up with the culture was a rollercoaster to say the least 😅

That was a very funny commentary on a highly bizarre movie. I had forgotten how exquisitely weird this movie was. It was like multiple random people walking by Disney headquarters submitted chapters and someone at Disney glued it all together...badly. I had to Google Brink it seems weird enough to provide laughs, so yes do a commentary. Please do Smart House (1999). This movie has violence against children, false imprisonment, stalking, invasion of privacy and that is all I can remember in 60 seconds!

What’s also wild is that in schools (at least in my experience growing up and now being a teacher), the popular kids actually usually are the ones making really good grades. The kids that don’t do their work and slack off often are the outcasts.

I think it varies by school and local culture/values. I’m a 2019 grad but at my high school the popular kids were the class clowns and “dumb jock” stereotypes who everyone knew got poor test scores and never did their homework, while the kids who visibly excelled were thought of as lame and boring. I live in Hawaii and that was with a primarily local Filipino-mix community where most parents only had a high school diploma, so I think academics just wasn’t priority. Versus my sister’s currently a senior at the high school a valley over from mine where the community is more involved in business and the local community college is, and at her school the popular kids usually do pretty well academically

That was a wild movie. I have a huge love for the old classic Disney Channel (DC) Original Movies. My two favorites were the original Under Wraps, Mom's Got a date with a vampire and Phantom of the Megaplex. The 90s Under Wraps did scare me when I was a kid at that time. I loved how they made The Wart creature so creepy, vile and monsterous. (Yes that fictional beast within a movie) Compare him to the remake and yeah it was completely different. Mom's Got a date with a Vampire that was somewhat wild for another DC Halloween movie. The title says it all, but there was a scene that was cut out for obvious reasons, I saw it on its premier date, the vampire when he stares at the dog he wanted to eat it, but he doesn't want to spoil his appetite. Phantom of the Megaplex, that movie terrified me whenever the phantom laughs.

Better ending: he has Jesse compete for him, but Jesse stumbles and almost drowns, Cody has to jump in and save him. The other kids are confused and grossed out by his fins, but Jesse stands up for him. Socially scorned by everyone else, Jess and Cody leave as best friends

I can’t tell you how happy this video made me of just reliving through my childhood. I know Disney channel movies and shows were batshit crazy and constantly this like adult type dialogue happening between children but those movies and shows will forever bring me so much joy from childhood. Also please do brink I was obsessed with that movie. There’s so many to talk about Smart house and moms got a date with a vampire and double teamed there’s so many classics.

I haven’t watched yet only read the title! The 13th year legit made me think I was going to become a mermaid at 13 😩🤣🤣. I was scared and excited at the same time. My parents would reassure me that I wasn’t found or adopted and I look just like my dad. But I was not convinced 😩🤣🤣

I completely missed this movie growing up, but it sounds exactly like the kind of thing I would’ve been into. This video is great, and I hope you decide to do more about old Disney original movies! I think my favorite Disney original was The Luck of the Irish, it was SO bizarre I couldn’t help but love it (Also not a Disney original, but I was absolutely obsessed with The Haunting Hour: Don’t Think About It. It was one of the things that jump started my love of horror and it’ll always hold a special place in my heart)

I am HERE FOR THIS SERIES🎉 I remember watching this movie and didn’t not notice all these weird undertones and inconsistencies in the film. The way you simulated putting on a seatbelt to lead us into the 180 the movie went SENT ME! I now need to rewatch this for nostalgic sake and your retelling was chefs kiss 💜 MORE OF THESE! 🧜‍♀️

to add to the conversation about the damaging nerd stereotype - i'm from Finland, never watched Disney Channel and still the trope lived very strongly in the movies and tv shows that we all used to watch. And yes i was bullied for my whole life for being "that nerd". Very nice
