When you mentioned Nikita’s age it really did put it in perspective bc I’m the same age as her and work as a substitute teacher at high schools... I can’t imagine being on a reality tv show when the rest of the cast is the same age as my students. I hope she’d be more mature than them

I also thought it was kind of inappropriate of Nikita to be hanging out with kids this young. It always was really weird to me and now after this how came out, it makes her look even worse honestly! I never liked Nikita though! She's highly immature and stuck up and way to into herself!

My jaw actually dropped when she said how old she was. I truly thought she was closer to my age(I’m 33) and always wondered why she hung out with people so young. I still don’t get it with her being 25 but I guess it’s because she acts just like them so why not ya know?

this reminds me of james charles being close with charli and them always hanging out.... she was literally like 16 ans he was like 21??? that’s a pretty big age gap for that age. like even if they’re both content creators, what the hell else do they have in common? that made me uncomfy bc if a 21 year old wanted to hang out with me when i was 16, i would have thought it was weird.

@@hwoods-kg1jf I found it especially uncomfortable when she kept making weird comments about "where are the cute/hot boys at?" or when she showed up in very revealing and sexual clothing. nothing inherently wrong with either of those but when you consider that she's doing it while being surrounded by minors or people who just became adults it's really off putting...

I feel like Thomas was trying so hard to NOT be Team 10 (no cut taken, no contracts, just more of a 'friends hanging out' feel) that he kind of shot himself in the foot. If he's really struggling as much as he says in this show, then yes, you need contracts. Having contracts isn't what made Team 10 toxic, it was what was IN those contracts that was the issue.

I know right? I remember when all of that was happening and it REALLY upset and made me so mad! I did what I was supposed to do and stayed home (even though I wasn't sick. I didn't want to risk it. I only went out for groceries, medication at the pharmacy and doctor's appointments. I haven't gone to any bars, restaurants, concerts, nothing like that) and still don't even though I'm triple vaxxed! I'm not taking any chances! I'm high risk due to health issues I have already! I think I already had it once (before it was announced it was a "thing" in the USA and Trump was dismissing it as "a democratic hoax") and there wasn't any tests made to the public yet but I was sick as hell for almost 2 months so I'm assuming that's what I had. I got it from my boyfriend who was working at a VA hospital (he's a retired disabled veteran who spent 18 years in the military). It still amazes me that people aren't taking this seriously! Blows my mind!

I remember Philip Defranco covering this at the beginning of quarantine and how in an interview about the parties and breaking Covid guidelines Thomas literally made a statement about how “it was their job to entertain people” and they “couldn’t be expected to put their lives on hold.” Like how entitled do you have to be to say something like that? Also like good to know despite managing and being a member of a literal content house none of you are interesting enough on your own and you need 50 other people around you to be slightly entertaining

My issue with the show was the emphasis on “coming from nothing.” I don’t know much about these kids but the obsession with playing down your middle class upbringing is such a weird and problematic thing to me. I don’t know these kids socioeconomic background but they can’t all have grown up poor, even having a space that is nice enough to film a video in indicates some level of money and class. It’s like growing up with issues injects some character without telling us anything.

it's the netflix business model to put out a lot of new hyped shows (that will gain new subscribers) and then cancel it in 1-2 seasons. New content to get people signed up to netflix because their financial growth is based in acquiring new subscribers. This business model makes sense when you realize Netflix is a data collecting company, not a film studio.

I just can not stand Nikita. What is soooo problematic about her is every single time someone tries to hold her accountable for the awful things she does she just plays the trans card and says it because of that. Well no it's not. I'm sure she does get horrible people saying bad things to her cause she is trans but she uses that as an excuse to be horrible when that is not the issue. The issue is her being an awful person 90% of the time. If I see a comment in videos about her and they r saying things about her being a man, I never hesitate to call those people out. I’m 24 with a 15-year-old niece and we are super close but the idea of socially hanging out w ppl around their age is just crazy to me. I am (rightly) an authoritative figure in their life bc we are in very different life stages…even around 20 year olds I can really feel the difference in maturity levels - which is correct! We are in different places developmentally! It concerns me deeply how much these tiktok-ers and influencers normalise hanging out with minors and teenagers when you’re 25+…like you’re still young but there’s a *huge* difference between 25 young and 16 young

Gotta say there is a difference between a 15yr old and an 18yr old (also as her aunt you were going to feel responsible for her regardless, I speak as an aunt). All of the people on this show are 18 or older. Havent seen the show but if she is closer to the 20+ members then that would be even less of a gap. I dont condone romantic relationships between 18yr olds and older adults, but I dont get where the problem is with friendships that could just as easily happen in a work or postsecondary environment. Her crush or whatever on Vinnis is/was inappropriate tho, I dont think theres anything wrong with being friends but it does fall on her to not cross the line.

I was literally cheering for Thomas to close the hype house because it was clearly weighing on him a lot. I actually felt really bad for Thomas once you met his dad and heard his backstory. Thomas came off as controlling and had a poor management style but also he's 20 and can you blame him based on what he had heard about his childhood. The most interesting part of the show in my opinion was that a lot of the people in the hype house had very dark family lives or nonexistent ones and clearly need some direction in terms of their career and personal life. I contrast that with the D'amelios and Addison Rae who's families are very very involved in their careers and serve (I think ) as an integral part of their success because of the support and security they provide so their child can succeed.

Honestly, it seems like kids play-acting how to run a business. Which is the case. Also, it seems like one of the main things against a content house is how it throws the work-life balance out of whack. I had to learn to not bring work with me home the hard way and I'm pretty sure it's the same for a lot of adults. So seeing kids go through that kinda makes me feel bad for them, because yeah, a lot them are awful but they're literally teens. Most of us were awful during that age. And none of us had the lens of social media to record of all that. Keep in mind I'm not excusing the truly heinous shit (like partying during the pandemic). They don't have a point of reference into how 'real' business works and how to separate a friendship from a work relationship.

When you were talking about the intros and having so many people, it occurs to me this is unique to most reality shows that we know “so much” about these people. Or are supposed to but I know who 2 of them are. For shows like RHOBH, bachelor, etc. we learn about the cast from the show. It makes the info about them so digestible. Here we have a lot of people who think every detail about themselves is important and they all think they’re super important so it makes it so overwhelming like you said. Unlike on bachelor or other shows the producers edit and curate the storylines so much cleaner and from scratch since most of them are unknown before the first episode airs.

I think Netflix literally missed "the hype" when The Hype House was actually "hyped" and still popular and thriving. Like you said, I think Netflix showed up thinking they were gonna be documenting some long term type show that would have a few seasons at least but from what I've seen in several videos about the show on KZbin, including this one, it was just one big shit show (especially the Larry, Nikita and Sienna situations). I honestly didn't know very much about The Hype House or any of it's members until this show came out and I seen people doing videos about it. It's normally not something I would watch but I watch all of your content because your videos are so good Hannah! You did great on this video! You saved me from watching hours of mediocre young Tik Tokers who make way too much money for what little they actually do! I had to look at the last 5 minutes of the show for myself, because that just seemed such an abrupt ending. And nope, it really just goes from people partying together, Thomas saying they're like a family to "6 months later" and half the people moving out. I don't know if the last few minutes can be used to represent the entire show, but during the ending--if not the whole thing--it sounds to me like there's a lot of forced conclusions/life lessons being thrown in. Like when they cut to Chase saying "we're all really close" but the best clip they could find to illustrate that is Larray telling Nikita "I just don't want to fight anymore". Might as well be "footage not found".

Agree and disagree re: percentage-based contracts always being bad. I’m a professional stand up comedian and my manage and agents take a percentage. My feeling about it is will they bring in enough to be worth it - in this case, will 90% of whatever I make being in a hype house be more than 100% of what I would make without it? Agree that the long term contracts are massively predatory, though, and another problem with signing away 10% of your income to a house like that is that managers/agents will also take a percentage on top of that, so after everyone gets their cut they’re “earning” significantly less than they do on paper.

I did actually feel bad for thomas cause it must be so frustrating feeling all this pressure to pay the bills and seemingly being the only one who cares and is actually willing to put the work in (also being super young). Like even if a tik tok takes a while to make, they each only have to do one a month! and they won’t even do that. Also about the contracts, I’m just not convinced someone that young would seriously think about something like that, despite how much they’re trying to be serious business people, especially since they’re all about the same age and (kind of) friends, I don’t know if he instead thought they would listen because it’s mutually beneficial for them to uphold their side, which is pretty rational thinking

"Has a fake wedding to get views" I think this idea just shows among many other aspects how young these ppl are and especially how immature their thinking still is. I truly hope that having this fake wedding does not give these ppl and their millions of mostly young viewers the idea that getting married for real is just something you do for views, and is something you can just jump into at one moment and jump out when ever you feel like. Not surprised at all, that one of them who really wants to get married was upset about this.

The torture I endured today at work, after I received a notification that you posted this and I was forced to wait until the end of my shift to watch it, was heartbreaking

I watched this show because I needed to kill some brain cells, and I thought maybe it would be fun. But no, it was just depressing. None of the people wanted to be there, none of them wanted to be creators, and all of them had unresolved traumas. They all need therapy, not a reality show

First thing I thought when it popped up on Netflix was, “Gotta wait for that Smokey Glow review now.” Ain’t nobody got time for that…but I have time for the Smokey tea all day, every day ☕️.

Jenna and Julien talked about channel networks and how predatory they can be, just like this, where you sign on for a long span of time for a certain percentage. An earlier episode. Really, really intriguing.

29:17 Yes! Exactly! Most of us probably wanted to die of embarrassment when our parents talked about our high school relationship with other people. Plus those other people would likely be just family friends or relatives. But with public figures/social media personalities, all of a sudden it’s okay to ask every little detail of their teenage relationship, as if they have figured every piece of their relationship out. Like, we are not their aunt or whatever, we don’t deserve the details!

Can we please get a reality show where one or two brave "normal people" who have actually had jobs in more "established" sectors like retail, office work, etc. join the Hype House for a week and call out (either to the house members or the cameras) how full-of-shit these kids are??

Ok so I've been avoiding glowmas like a plague so I can binge them all and I just got back on the grind of watching your videos one after another because I've got chores to do and I have to say love the new intro! It's so beautiful! Whoever came up with it good job.

I finally got Covid after being exposed Jan 2 ‘22 by my brother. And only found out afterwards that he had been to a freaking bar for NYE during a wave where our small province is getting 1000 cases a day in Omicron. And my whole family has been defending him and saying it’s not his fault. Thank you for making this video cause I needed to know someone was on my side. I am the only one making a stink about it in our family group chats but he’s the baby 21 year old. It’s so annoying. Our stepmom had lupus and a heart condition (two heart valve replacements in 5 years) and he gave her Covid. After us protecting her and giving up so much to keep her safe. I’m still so mad.

In the Evolution of James Charles video, Hannah talks about a major issue of Shane/Jefree/Tati is that they didn’t care about James’ harmful actions until it could potentially affect their bag. In this the issue with these lot is that none of them care about harmful Larri’s actions until it personally affected them. It’s interesting how the issue with influencers can be summed up with influencers lacking the ability to empathise. Amandabb did a video on Influencers Lacking Empathy and it’s just insane (and disgusting) to see how it’s such a prominent feature of so many of the major influencers.

It is crazy to think that these people's brains haven't even finished developing yet, and they're a large group together, with large financial responsibilities. It's hard enough to be a regular college student in university environments. This just seems like multiple recipes for disasters, and a good portion of the world is watching them while this is happening. Crazy world we live in!

Netflix came way to late with this. If this was filmed when charlie and addison where still there, this show would have been a hit.

I laughed when you said no adult would do this. I'm almost 40 and they can sign me up. I have too many student loans to have any dignity at this point in my life. Is there a hashtag or something I can use? "Will get in catfight and let Nikita pull out my hair for mid-five figure salary"?
