The Periphal and League of their own have been cancelled after previously being renewed by Amazon Prime Video for absurd reasons. In a rare win for Amazon, sanity rules. Instead of renewing financial failures like The Peripheral and League of thier own because we wanted to preserve someones feelings, or we're been emotionally manipulated. The bottom line once again becomes more important. It's just a shame it took the CEO demanding answers about Amazon Prime Videos spending and budgets before these obviously bad decisiones were reversed. It begs the question, what will happen to the the people responsible for the decisions in the first place. Amazon Prime Video can't have the Amazon CEO looking over every decision all the time, the only way to run a company like this in the long term, is to have reliable leadership incharge in the first place. But what do you think? Let me know your thoughts down below and as always, thanks for watching :)

I think the company you're talking about is distinctly different from Amazon Studios. It's a very bad look for a woman in charge of the studios to be making decisions based on her emotions - While deliberately ignoring focus groups that told her the truth, which she did not want to hear. As a woman, I feel this is worse than cringe. It's feeding into a (some might say THE) negative stereotype men have held against women and the advancement of women's rights since the mid-1800s. Why don't the Hollywood decision making people understand that they can try to lecture as much as they want in their "entertainment" offerings, but nobody's watching them except perhaps a tiny niche audience, so what's the point? I guess it makes their smug conscience happy ("I've done MY part in telling the deplorables what to think") and helps them to feel "seen" by the people whose approval they desire - and that is certainly worth hundreds of millions of dollars, right, Amazon? 🤔
@brad4058 Жыл бұрын
@@dronesclubhighjinks You mean why women should not be leaders? Well sometimes, you just gotta give them what they want. Give them enough rope to hang themselves. Kathleen Kennedy was one of the biggest ones to have fucked an industry with her decisions. Now it's Amazon's turn. When I was a freshman in college, I came into a seriously struggling theater program. The main director was enamored with weird, off the wall shows to "confront and challenge" the audience. You might get 20 to 30 people per show, the program was in bad shape. Along with me, came a new director who realized that the world sucks and people just wanted to be entertained. He started doing "meat and potatoes" shows. By the time I graduated, we had sold out, standing room only shows every single night. Wheel of Time has some of the best fantasy source material the literary genre has to offer. The show runners decided they wanted the name, "Wheel of Time", but they wanted to have theie own woke story which has nothing to do with the books at all. They produced a train wreck, but they'd already been greenlit for 3 seasons before the first episode aired. Most fans of the books bailed after the very first episode. If they'd have followed the books, it would have been a hit. It seems Amazon studios just likes setting money on fire. No way has any increase in prime subs from these shows covered the costs. All they had to do with Wheel of Time was stick to the books. 1 book per season and you'd have an audience for a decade. The amount of minute detail descriptions should make it PERFECT to be made into a true tv show. Everything they could possibly need to know about the entire world is right there for the production. Instead - they hired a person that wasn't a fan, showed disdain for the source material and for the fans, and adamantly wanted to make it his own. You can tell that the set designers scoured the books. But none of the showrunners bothered to read past the first few chapters, skimmed the rest and didn't bother to even get the cliff notes of the entire story. Amazon really needs to cancel it, or hire a good showrunner, listen to Sanderson, and start over.

Very true. They had a surefire hit and blew it. The showrunner even came out and said he was going to remake it and that fans of the books would probably not like the changes. Wheel of Time is such a great series of novels, Amazon could easily make it as popular as Game of Thrones. I read both series of books before they were put on screen. Both stories are excellent. The story line for game of Thrones branched out in so many different directions, it was hard to follow in reading the books. Wheel of time is a better written series, consists of 14 books and has the potential to run for 14 or more seasons (IF AMAZON WOULD JUST STICK TO THE STORY AS WRITTEN). The first season of Wheel of Time was very disappointing, but not as disappointing as Rings of Power. it can be rescued but will probably go down the same path as Rings of Power. Never really was a huge fan of Tolkein's writing style, but the stories are great. As for Peripheral, I thought the concept was good and I was looking forward to the next season to see where it went. It actually got so bad that when I recently read a startrek novel released in the eighties, and Spok started talking about life being: "Infinite diversity in infinite combinations!" I found myself wincing even before I realised he was talking about biological species, and not whatever identity some pink haired lune has desired to call them/her/cat/zee self today! The double irony is that prior to this era, I've actually enjoyed series like torchwood, or books like Christopher Liden's falcon banner, which do have prominently gay or bisexual characters and half of the fiction I've read or the films I've seen have had female protagonists. @@theghosty99 I'm afraid you seem to have misunderstood my comment. Is it possible to create a good story with say gay or none caucasian characters? Hell yes, Fyi, I'm reading Victoria Shwhab's shades of magic series at the moment, which features a large range of bisexual characters, and a major plot relevent romance between two guys. However, it also features genuinely interesting world building and complex characterisation (even if it's principle female character is a bit of a Mary sue." However, I was recommended the series by my lady, as good fiction. If however I was recommended it by someone who spoke about "the diversity", I wouldn't have read it, since at the moment "diversity" has come to be associated in my mind, and likely in the minds of a lot of other people, with implicitly bad writing. That was why I winced when I found it in a startrek novel. As many have said, if writers want people to sympathise with characters from a given minority, just write good characters from that minority, and most people will like them, because news flash, most people are not! actually racist/sexist/homophobic. most people do however hate bad writing, and when "diversity", is always associated with bad writing, people are going to start hating that too. Let's say that they pay 10$/month for the streaming service. Let's say that 1/2 of that subscription goes to the streaming company, and 1/2 goes to the people who make the shows... That would be 5$ per person... split among 100 shows... (5 cents per show) further split among the hundreds of people who made the shows. IMO, a thornier problem is... Why do those people deserve residuals in the first place? If THEY do... then EVERYONE does... or no one does. What about paying residuals to the farmer who grew the food you ate for breakfast 20 years ago? (and every other meal).

Around 2019 the industry run into the „streaming bubble“, where everybody was convinced that winning the streaming wars would mean being the most successful media company in the world. So lots of companies started to increase their output beyond what the capacity has been. This created an issue with finding good people and drove the industry to insane deals. Nobody cared if this was sustainable as the pot full of gold was just waiting behind that rainbow. So yeah, the industry went into very stupid deals that make no sense, completely driven by fear of missing out (FOMO). Obviously somebody was clever enough to get paid for nothing just on the off chance he has a good idea while sitting on the pot and somebody smarter managed to establish this as a new model for keeping talent close. They all must have had a good laugh, while Jennifer Salke still got paid millions thanks to Amazon’s other businesses. Bottom line: nobody cared about common sense as they were promised to get rich just on the word „streaming“.

My Wife saw an ad for "The Peripheral" a long time ago. We gave it a shot, I think we just kind of forgot what we were watching during a commercial or something. She never mentioned it again. We don't bother to even look at amazon anymore for entertainment. It's the same for all the major streamers, they have been cranking out formula since the start. There's only so much beating the corpse of a significant literary figure (who always happens to be a white guy, because history), then ripping the story apart to tell a different story using the title of a super famous and loved story to be inclusive to diverse voices? Are these people seriously telling me that a "diverse" voice hasn't written anything of merit since "Snow White" came out? Now is there time to fix "Song of the South", I triple-dog dare them.

Amazon had one of the best tv shows with The Expanse when they took it over from syfy after they cancelled it. The first 2 seasons they made were absolutely superb and i believe big hits with the audiences and the fans. Then they bought lord of the rings rights and had a massive panic about how much they had spent on it. Total buyers regret, the people in charge of deciding things like this acting like they had a literal blank cheque and not caring about the cost. The wheel of time was bought about the same time and they gave it a full 10 episode season, but as a result they started to pocket pinch on other shows, the expanse was subsequently reduced from 10 episodes to 6 for a final season (the creators wanted to take a break as the books take a 20 year break at that point, hopefully in a while they will come back for the last few seasons of books) and it shows at times from the rushed storytelling it should have had the full 10 episodes. I fully believe that they overextended themselves with rings of power, and they will not admit how much of a failure it has been because it would just look so monumentally bad a failure with how much they spent on it. The thing is, as someone who did go back to watch the end of it - the last 4 episodes are actually good and really entertaining - they will make it a multi season show just so they can say they have a full story for what it cost, and probably release it on disc to have it be a set with the peter jackson movies.

Store manager (highest level manager in the store) is too spineless to enforce consequences on poor performers/the chronically late, and too afraid of being honest with the higher-ups as to the problems the store is having (mainly because it means she hasn't been doing her job for the past several years). She expects things to just 'work'; for people to not be 'negative'. She also recently had the nerve to complain about her management staff "not supporting her", while also wondering why the turn-over for managers at her store is at *_150%._* I'm not kidding with that number, by the way. The higher-ups recently came in and demanded to know WTF is going on and why we haven't been able to keep people for more than a couple months since she took over. Just imagine amazon spending that much money on better working conditions for regular employees... alone the some they gave away for Phobee not delivering anything could have covered production costs for one or two decent indie movies. On the same not, why does amazon even have a movie studio? Amazon music just provides music from established artists, comparable to AppleMusic or Spotify - to my knowledge, amazon does ot (yet) have their own music production line. So why not stick to the same with movies? There are studios and publishers who do not necessarily have their own streaming service, way not ptovide them a platform? I personally don't know any person paying for prime because of the video service or music library - so why even spend money on something that does not even generate new revenues?

CEOs are disconnected from real life in America. They rely on graduates of various liberal arts programs, full of leftist nonsense, to tell them what the average American wants and needs from the entertainment industry. They get the purple haired feminists telling them that Mr. and Mrs. middle America love left-wing ideas, or at least they would if we understood our own privilege. Since everyone that gets hired has to be approved by the progressives in the HR department, the CEO ends up thinking that most Americans think like the twits they hired to manage their business. Disney, Target, Bud Light, CMT, MLB, ESPN, and the NFL have all suffered from this apparent disconnect between middle America and progressive ideology.
