Distributor Lockout! 55 Chevy Final Touches.

The last item on the to-do-list is locking out the distributor to give this girl the right timing for the perfect rumble. The August of Dan is well underway and this car is thisclose to being on the road and headed on it's first road trip! What would you have done different?

I installed the AEM wide band kit. The 1st o2 sensor lasted about 20 minutes, they where great too deal with to send a new one. And it's been working great.

I read somewhere that spacers can help prevent vapor lock, keeps the heat from transferring to carb slightly cooler fuel. Dunno if it's true...but sounds good 😆

It's true. My hotrod would vapor lock on 100* day. I used the thick fiber type gasket along with a heat shield that I trimmed for a great fit. Lastly using free plastic sheet I made a shield directing ventilation.

Tri Five door squeeks are legendary! All five of my '55's have door squeek and the last buddy who went at my Bel Air Sedan with a can of oil, nearly got tackled! It's a nostalgic sound and some people will just never get it! Locking out the distributor certainly changed the idle for the better! The car is looking and sounding great! Keep up the great work guys!

That thing would look cool with some Machinery Gray Rust-Oleum on it. That way at least it'll be sealed in so that it's not rusting through like the primer. It'll give it that industrial look but still be close to what it is now

@32:00 I used to think poorly of K&N - until I read stuff and watched videos from David Vizard on his testing on them. Now I'm sold. He does extensive testing on stuff before blessing it. BTW, I have the chrome version of that air cleaner on my 240Z with a 406 SBC.

Your going to play hell on the street getting it started when it's hot you better have a real good high torque starter and great battery and connections especially on a high compression big block personally I would not have locked it out but limited the advance and ran it with a lot of base timing but not all in all the time maybe fifteen or even twenty deg base and then let it get to thirty or thirty five once it's running that can be easily accomplished it's going to be super tight when hot you've heard cars w too much timing hot trying to start I'm sure ۔۔ it's hard to type the sound lol good luck I'll be curious to see how it works out actually

I have a street Henry J gasser with fender well headers. I run the wires under the headers you can't even see them. You should run the spark plug wires under the headers. No more getting burnt.

I am still trying to learn after spinning wrenches for over half a century. .. Why would you want to lock out ignition timing at the distributor while running an automatic transmission, instead of adjusting the timing with the engine running at cruise RPM ? .. Seems as though you would be able to adjust the ignition timing to optimum without locking out timing ? .. I think I would better understand the point if you were running an ignition control box, as it would control timing for you ( OR, at least it is capable ? ). . Help me out, what don't I understand ?

That carb spacer plan won’t work. The vacuum advance needs to be hooked to a timed vacuum port. The vacuum advance is there to momentarily advance the timing as the engine comes off idle.

Thunderhead89 has a kit that allows carburetors to be controlled like EFI.

Dan, when you lock out your distributer and run 30 degrees of initial timing, you risk harder starting and increase the possibility of backfiring thru the carburetor. Especially in the winter.
