It doesn't look like the swap was done terribly, however its a major issue to not heavily disclose the LS3 instead of the LS7 which is significantly more valuable. I personally wouldn't mind a Z06 chassis with an LS3, basically just makes it a grand sport. Definitely would be interested at the right price, but not disclosing is straight up scamming in my opinion.

I’ve seen this car closer to a year ago being listed on marketplace, the reason this car has the swap is due to dropping a valve. With what the seller noted was completely honest about the car mentioned it was replaced with a crate engine straight from Chevy with receipts being that it was a stock ls3. Seller mentioned he wanted to prevent that issue going forward and for half the cost decided to do the swap. I’m not too sure how it ended up on this site but as far as what I saw when it was first listed car was the guys weekend car.

I was thinking that very thing...this was a "valve retainer" car and they probably just swapped a crate engine in. Truth be told you can make up the 75hp in the 6.2 with a cam swap and a few supporting mods...more like 100hp. Just the Z06 cam in the 6.2 is worth around 50hp. (That car might actually have that swap. It would only be down 25hp.) Hell if you really want to party pick up a 427 (7.0L) crate engine from Texas speed or another reputable builder and save a load of cash. I would have bought that Z06 in a heartbeat if the price was right.

Just an FYI that Canadian cert tag @ 5:05 sounds like a salvage to repaired title state governing requirement (even more expected by the frame repair). I had to get one to register my salvaged track car I bought from auction. They ensure the repairs and parts aren’t bandaids and actual repairs and fixes before you can register it to make sure it’s safe for road use. Sounds like this was a salvaged car that was sent to Canada to repair the title and send back to auction off as a clean title car.

As soon as I saw that intake I knew. The 427 valve cover cosmetic pieces probably do not fit the LS3 intake, so they were just left off. Just those not being there is weird. Usually Vette owners keep them on, ESPECIALLY the Z06 ones.

Guarantee this Z06 suffered the infamous valve drop and previous owner didn’t wanna spend $15k+ for a new LS7 so they just had a LS3 crate motor swapped in it. Basically is a Grand Sport now and not a Z06, but for the right price honestly may still be worth!

I had the opposite happen. My first car was a 1984 1.0 VW polo breadvan. Tatty old thing, £300, from a dealer. I was starting to learn how to fix it myself. Year and a bit later. It was having issue with the distributor, a mate had one sat in a field so I went and got the distributor and a few other oddments off of it. I can’t remember which part it was that didn’t fit so I dug a bit deeper, found the engine number. High compression 1.3! Win.

I know the original owner of this car!! He was at a track day with it and was making slow pace laps getting a feel of the car, then it had a catastrophic engine failure, where it dropped a valve, like the ls7 was known for. He didn’t want to put in another factory gm ls7 as they never fixed the issue. So instead of spending 40k on a crate ls7 he ordered a crate ls3 from gmp performance. This isn’t a scam. The seller listed it in big bold letters. The Auction house ignored the details sent by the owner and decided to make their own listing. Rob isn’t the bad guy the Auction house is liable!!!!!!!!

WIthout reading the comments or getting further than the opening the hood, I can already tell that's a motor swap. When I bought my C6Z it already had a MSD intake, so I'm not used to what they look like stock, but something is off and I bet at best an LS3 is in there, and probably a truck motor. Edit - and I was right. LS7 engines like to grenade with several different, all to common problems. They have to be treated more on the exotic side than the small block side. For a track car, I understand why one would just swap an LS3 in it. I didn't watch the video closely but that dipstick doesn't remind me of the dry sump dipstick on mine, so I'm betting this was a wet sump car too, which is a solid indicator. I love these cars (this is a 3LZ car too), but from the valve guide issues (all years, not just what GM will fess up to), coating issues on the titanium rods, rod bearing issues in certain years, rocker arm issues on certain years, oil cooler that sucks for street use on the earlier cars, too small of a dry sump tank on earlier cars, etc...I sold mine for a profit as I knew something big was coming in the next 1-2 years and I'd rather make a profit than a huge loss. As for the clutch fluid being dark - super common. These cars are notorious for killing the clutch fluid. The remote bleeder should be done any time you service the clutch as it makes it a quick job to flush out the clutch fluid. I'd recommend a fluid flush at every oil change. Sounds excessive, but it is what these cars need. Mine (even with an aftermarket clutch that felt great and held 590RWHP with zero issues) was hard on the fluid. 5 minute job (with a helper) to flush the fluid.
@ARehman11194
@ARehman11194 3 ай бұрын
One thing I noticed when you were inspecting the clutch fluid, this car has the old clutch master cylinder potentially since they updated to a new part where the canister is black. Unless they swapped the clear one to the new master cylinder, This car still has the original which is known to cause a clutch pedal sticking issue.

I bought a 2014 BMW 435 X Drive, which was sold as being Cat N 'MINOR DENTS/SCRATCHES' When the car was delivered my mechanic commented that the engine was running slightly off a cylinder, which at the time was thought to be a faulty injector. The car was parked until we had a slot to carry out repairs, we checked the compression, which was half what it should have been on one cylinder, we decided to dig deeper to try to resolve the problem, which turned out to be a bent connecting rod. This was obviously why the car was sold through Copart. When I approached copart about this problem their reply was ''TOUGH LUCK'' I am preparing for a court case.

I bought a copart auction car from Cali several years ago. I had the intent of working on it myself but quickly found my home garage to be too small. I later traded the car and the new owner discovered that insurance auction car not only had the engine swapped, but they also had swapped many of the electronic. It is such a seedy business.

Was it a wide body conversion? A Badge is cheap! Did you look at the frame? Was it aluminum? To me it seems either an engine swap where the notorious "Valve Drop" happened, or a wide body kit. The frame is the same, just tires, and the ability to make adjustments to not hurt the body panels.

I don't consider myself a "noob" in the mechanic or car field. But I tell you what, I would NOT have cought that engine swap. That comes from sheer expertise and experience that these guys have that I simply do not. And embarrassingly, something similar happened to me. I bought a truck with a fake title. Lost all my money and the truck, left walkin. Scammers are getting good. I'm super glad you saved Sam on this one.

Or just experience, I bought a car with a swapped engine once. Now I check the engine and vin every time. At least for me it was a $3,000 car, ran like crap for 28 months but it ran.

You can tell by the intake.. and I ain't a car mechanic but I know how to work on a car the typical general things that all men should know. Yet I am a gm fanatic love all ls motors and saw this and my first thinking was it's not the LS7 and they rushed putting the engine in.. and to me didn't connect the clutch.

If you are buying a car with a special motor always check the heads and block. I remember one of the Power Block shows buying a 1st gen CTS-V and discovering an iron block 6.0 swapped in. Hoovie bought an X6M with a regular V8 swapped in.

I mostly work on BMW and Porsches but as for domestics I'm a Mopar a Ford guy. Though I'm pretty sure that they didn't put the covers on because the won't fit on the LS3 heads you'd need to change the whole top end to use the intake and covers which I'm not sure would work with the LS7 bottom end. I'd need to talk to my LS guy .

Welp, looks like Sam bought a very expensive Grand Sport! Very good catch on that intake tipping you off right at the start. Question is if they went aftermarket and did a stroker on that dry sump LS3 (since you mention head studs) or kept it at just 6.2L, might tell Sam he needs to grab HP Tuners and see what it shows on the calibration.

When a clutch master cylinder fails from age the rubber seals break down and make the fluid dark. If you let it go long enough you will end of with metal shavings in the fluid from the piston rubbing.

That clutxh issue is either the slave cylender (built into the throwout bearing) or the clurxh master. Its cheap to replace the slave cylinder, throwout bearing, and clutch master cylender. About $200 or less in parts and a full day of doing the work. Its stupid essy

Sam didn't pay the Z06 price, which is part of why he was suspicious and had it inspected instead of just shipping it to FL. Sounds like he wanted a Z06 and so was being careful to make sure he got one.

The 6.2L is my all time favorite motor and used in many projects. The price would have to be around 20k mark to consider it and likely find a 7.0L and swap it back in new about another 16k. Used the 6.2L in another project that I was planning on using as a daily, if I bought it. That 6.2L does appear to be new out of crate and not pulled from something else. Is actually common as people blow those 7.0 quite a bit. I swap over a couple myself for a shop I worked at as people tend to drop a valve, or spin the bearings on those motor and much cheaper to get a new LS3 motor then even a well used LS7 motor, the price of a new one is over 16k.

Yep the dirty fluid gives it away immediately. The seal goes out on the slave cylinder and you start getting the clutch grit and dirt into the fluid. It works around the whole system and even if you put a new slave cylinder in, if you don't flush out the lines and swap out the master, it will have a destroyed master.

Ya, the LS7s are notorious for dropping valves bc of the titanium valves. Bet it dropped a valve, blew the block to pieces and they swapped an LS3 in.
