The fact that most young people nowadays apparently base their knowledge mainly on internet memes illustrates beautifully how valid the message of this song still is today (over 50 years later). FYI, the song is a critique of the superficiality of modern-day life.

These kiddos are young. I was born in the late 80’s and I know Simon and Garfunkel very well. My musical mentors often used them as perfect examples of balanced and nuanced harmonies. People come across or are guided to new music all the time then learn of the history and background of the song! I've done it several times for example Tiffany- I think we're alone now was a cover of a 60's song; Whitney Houston mutilating Dolly Patrons Always love you - a lot of people think that WH version is the original when it's not!

@lbialk if you're doing a cover of a song, yes, totally agree with you, but, when you're just reacting to a song, it is not the same! When I came across this version, I had totally forgot about the original version and was actually reminded of it because of a reaction video! The Sound of Silence", originally "The Sounds of Silence", is a song by the American music duo Simon & Garfunkel. The song was written by Paul Simon over a period of several months in 1963 and 1964. ... The growing airplay led Tom Wilson, the song's producer, to remix the track, overdubbing electric instruments and drums. Released: September 12, 1965

Was originally written and performed in 1963 by Simon & Garfunkle. The song is permeated with metaphores and is truly timeless when the context translates decades later. When written, the Viet Nam war was ongoing, there was segragation and civil unrest in the United States. It was commentary on the dark times as seen through the eyes of Simon & Garfunkle and reimagined by David Draimen

A lot of young people today just can’t appreciate the pure talent of the bands that started the metal movement. I’m not lumping you in with them. Without the technology to overproduce and cover up musical mistakes the 60’s and 70’s metal gods still made pure gold. Do an honest and pure musical talent reaction to War pigs by Black Sabbath then tell my if I’m wrong. Enjoyed your reaction here. Update: after watching your “down with a sickness “ reaction I want to suggest that you really concentrate on the guitar talent and don’t get too distracted by the lyrics or video. It is the biggest Anti-War song of all time but the guitar and construction of the song is simply unmatched. I look forward to watching you review it. Enjoy!

The song was written in the early 60s by Paul Simon and performed by Simon and Garfunkel. The song is about peoples failure to communicate with each other. Like the idea of reacting to metal, plenty of folks do, but a huge issue is that metal is a massively broad and flexible genre. "Metal" can range, as you've seen from a heavy/hard rock like Disturbed or newer Metallica, up to symphonic sounds like Epica and Nightwish, across to folk metal like Eluveitie, thrash such as Slayer and older Metallica, then Slipknot, Carcass, Wintersun, Jinjer, Meshuggah, Iron Maiden, Strapping Young Lad, Behemoth, Be'lakor, Amon Amrath and so many others all have a distinct sound. You take a Disturbed track, even at their heaviest and match it to a Cradle of Filth or Meshuggah song and you're not even in the same proverbial musical timezone. Nightwish, Epica, Arch Enemy and Jinjer all for example have female vocalists but the sounds the bands produce are vastly different (Epica and Nightwish being largely symphonic and Arch Enemy and Jinjer more classic death). Reacting to Metal is not a simple and singular thing. I love Be'lakor - Suns Delusion, Eluveitie - Tegernako, Gojira - Flying Whales and Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars but not sure how you or your sister(??) would cope with them, they are a whole gradient above what you're listening too.

I was a teen when this was first released by Simon and Garfunkel. I always thought that it was about the neon god sitting in the corner of every household, stopping speech and listening to others whilst glued to the box. David Draeman cries out his frustration at the fact that 60 years on no one heeded their warning, as can be seen on a daily basis everywhere you go with people having ear pieces in . stops conversation, and eyes down looking at the new neon god, the phone

Simon wrote this song back in the late 60’s or early 70’s sung by Simon and Garfunkel. Basically a warning of things to come that we will become silent and get caught up in a world of electronics, cell phones, computers, internet watching music videos becoming silent and immersed in all this electronics and no personal shared feelings listening each other, going to listen to or play live music, concerts together. Listen to part of the lyrics people hearing with out listening, how many people do we see in this world walking on the side walks our faces buried in our cell phones on internet or texting hearing but not listening to people or things around us. People at parties visiting friends or relatives yet on their phones again hearing but not communicating or listening so this was a warning of this to come and Disturbed version saying in urgency and in very strong vocals it’s! happening now!. I love this version of the song, it gave me chills

The original performed by Simon & Garfunkle in 1965 was a warning about surrendering to the "god of technology," and David Draiman's performance is castigating us for not paying attention. That is why Paul Simon has put a link to that performance on his own social media. And you don't have to feel bad about not recognizing the song as a cover, since I don't recognize covers of songs that were performed prior to WWII.

Simon and Garfunkel released this in 1964, I believe, and was a typical "folk" song written by Paul Simon. It has been covered many times but David Draiman used his classical training and combined it with his heavy metal voice to add a dimension never heard before with this song. David was classically trained as a cantor when he was growing up.

Simon and Garfunkels is the original ..Simon wrote this after a dream he had . He totally loved what Disturbed did with it

I can only imagine hearing this song for the 1st time with no commentary to interrupt it. To those fortunate few that were audience members at the Conan taping, my jealousy meter is at an eleven.

You should have watched the video that goes with it. Its about people not being able to communicate vocally or emotional anymore. When it was written in the 60s its was actually very prophetic about whats happening now, never mind back then, especially with thw technology we have now

This is a current way of presenting this folk classic, Disturbed is right on the money with this one!

I just think this version shows the true meaning of this song and the urgency and warning of the song that we need to straighten our shit out before it’s too late.

Every once in awhile I remember just how young you are. That song was written in the sixties by Paul Simon

Disturbed is a great band. This is an amazing cover. But if you want to hear Disturbed, than you need to listen to Down with the sickness.

Disturbed should release an album of covers. Nearly every time they cover a song, it's better than the original. My opinion.

Now this was a comment I saw quite a few times and it makes total sense the more I listen to both versions: S&G’s version was a warning of what’s happening to reality Disturbed’s version is basically the anger due to not heeding the warning beforehand; hence the growls at the near end. It makes so much sense but also hits deep, especially now in 2020... also small fun fact: David was actually sick when performing during the Conan show but still tried to perform as best as he could, boy oh boy did he do such

David is a classically trained tenor I believe..which not many people knew about him, he has a stunning voice!

Simon and Garfunkel's version was the warning... This version is the rage from the warning being ignored.

1964 - originated by Simon & Garfunkel....this version takes the song to a totally new level and dimension....I'm a believer in making change for the better without losing the meaning/message. :)

Simon and Garfunkel sang it in 1963. Paul Simon wrote it when he was 21. David's voice is more powerful and passionate than Paul Simons. Other bands have done it but this is by far the best one i have heard. I am 62. I love all kinds of music. Another one of there's is Down with the sickness.

Amazing reaction but this was a cover completely endorsed by Simon & Garfunkel. They have posted a link to Disturbed’s rendition of their song on their Facebook page. They were very impressed with their rendition and told Disturbed they made it their own. What an amazing compliment from the songwriter and singers of this song from 55 years ago.

This was originally done by Simon&Garfunkel. Another good version of this song came out recently as a cover done by an a capella group called Pentatonix. Should check out there version as well.

More metal suggestion! 🙂 Arch Enemy if you want some female growling. AE is an Melodic Death metal band from Sweden and one of the pioneers of female growling. Nemesis and The Eagle Flies Alone are Two good songs with them 🙂
