There is a hard edge from the paint line, but sanding it before painting may cause problems with the paint. If you want a line that you can not feel, you will need to clear, sand with 800 to 1000 and re-clear the surface being painted.

i am in the process of making a hot rod i want to add flames i got carried away and clear coated the whole car after the clear coat window drying time has expired i made a mistake and added some more clear i knew i screwed up because now i have some large dull dry spots on the top of my car where im not adding flames im not crazy about trying to buff them out so i was going to wet sand the top and reshoot the clear when i do the flames job on the other part of the car. However i have read that you can not just sand over clear and shoot new clear that it will not bind or stick to the existing clear. My question is what is the difference when you sand over clear add graphics and reshoot clear other words if it works for that why would it not work for the top I used urethane paint and clear thanks for your help

DIY is always good, but doesn't it seem redundant to air dry the panel just to wet sand it?
@corvetteracer916
@corvetteracer916 10 жыл бұрын
So you can clear over a panel that has been sanded with 1000 grit to knock off the gloss and it won leave any scratches? How about sanding down only paint to apply graphics? For example, painting a guitar, letting it cure, sand 1000, airbrush, clear?
@CarAddictGarage
@CarAddictGarage 10 жыл бұрын
Yes, cured clear coat or paint should be sanded with 800 to 1000 grit sandpaper before clearcoating. If not, the clear coat may peel. The clear will cover the 800 to 1000 grit scratches and you will not ba able to see them. I would paint and clear the guitar, then sand it. This way you will be sanding clear and not paint. Then you can do your artwork and clear coat.

I have a question the trouble I'm having trying to find videos that show this is for instance I want to paint a motorcycle and the tank I'm going to paint the colors are going to be black and a brandy dark red color metallic I want the bike to be mainly going to be the metallic Brandy color but I want to do some black stripes around the gas tank and then I'm going to do some sunbeams on the side of the gas tank now my question is since I'm going with those two colors do I lay the black down first and then tape off the line that I'm going to keep black and then the Sunbeam lines before I start airbrushing the fans on it or do I paint the whole bike the Brandy color and then do the airbrushing the black line the sunbeams and all that and the dragon scales so do I lay down black first and then tape off all the lining and then paint the bike the Brandy color and then do the airbrushing on the sunbeams and scales are dragon scales on the side or do I just tape off lines that I'm painting black that are going to be showing and then airbrush the dragon scales over the red paint my metallic Brandy and the lines and all that that's what I'm getting confused on if somebody could help me out I would really appreciate it going to be a Brandywine dark red with black dragon scales black stripes around the tank and fenders and and then the sun beams on the top of the tank I just don't know if I paint the whole thing block first tape off the lines that I want and then go back paint it red the Brandy color and then do the airbrushing on the sunbeams and on the Dragon scales would that be the way I would do it or primary then the color that I'm going to paint it Brandy dark red metallic and then tape everything off and do the black lines and then are brush all the black on top of the red I'm just trying to figure out what step to do it first lay down the black paint first then tape all my lines off and then spray it to Brandy dark red that I want or sprayed all the Brandy color and then come back in and airbrush the dragon scales on the lines around the tank and all that I'm just trying to figure out what process to do first if I can get some feedback I would appreciate it thank you

+DarkRenaissance2012 its because it would be pretty much impossible to sand after masking, you wouldnt be able to sand the edge along the masking properly and you would most likely ruin the edge on the masking tape so it would be a blurry line insted of sharp edge. and it also makes the paint stay flat, not adding a layer of paint on top of the base coat. that wouldnt look as good as when both the base and graphic is blended under a clearcoat, it would look more like a decal or sticker. hope this was a better answer ;-)
