In this GoPro tips and tricks video I show how to make a small compact GoPro rig. This rig can be used to mount your GoPro camera and an external mic. If you wanted to mount lights on it that would be possible as well. Rigs like this add a lot of flexibility to how you use your GoPro.

I might make one of these when I make a bit more professional videos. But I might make two places for bolts; one in the front and one on the side. I might also zip tie a flashlight on for night/ low light situations. And i will spray paint the pipes black and the connections blue. And if I buy the smart remote i would mount it on the grip.

Nice. Versatile, strong, and cheap! I'm gonna make one of these, only going to change the 90 degree at the top into a 45. That may make it more ergonomic. I also plan to leave space for a couple small led lights. Mount those by cutting a PVC fitting on a bias the long way and wedge the light in. Thanks for the inspiration.

I discovered this particular video late last year, after buying my 2nd Hero 5 Black (they were practically giving them away, couldn't pass it up!). I had googled DIY rigs specific to GoPro, and yours suited me fine. I'm sorry to say that as a fairly reclusive Old Guy I don't do social media, so I can't send a picture of my take on your great idea; but I can at least describe it: I used 3/4-inch schedule 40 PVC pipe & fittings; the frame is as you designed it, though perhaps a tad bigger, and painted flat black after assembly. My own take was to Gorilla-glue across the frame a 6-inch-square sheet of 1/8-inch plexiglass as a platform for the camera mount and mic adapter setup. The camera is mounted into a ball-joint buckle (with a blue Smatree aluminum thumbscrew which brand you specifically recommended) which is in turn mounted into a flat adhesive mount, front and center on the plexiglass. The mic adapter (no choice here, had to get that admittedly oversized and kind of expensive GoPro official one) is just to the left of the camera setup, about an inch away. It's held firmly in place by a bit of the grey adhesive stuff used in the adhesive mounts. The short cable fits with no strain or stretch nicely into the USB-C slot on the camera with a gentle S-curve. I plugged in an Edutige ETM-001 omni-directional mic, a tiny little marvel (-23 dB!) about an inch long with an equally tiny wind protector. I did a short test using standard mic setting on the camera and was happy with the results; also the mic doesn't show even at the widest angle view. I expect to have some fun with this setup when I'm feeling better and can get around some. I'm a subscriber to your channel; thanks again for your informative tips, tricks and ideas.

A good optional extra you could add to this rig would be some way to hold your phone on the top. Because of the wireless abilities of the gopro you could use your phone as some sort of monitor to help frame your shot. You could use a phone case for your phone and mount it using plastic and adhesive or use a screw mounting mechanism so the case is removeable as well as the phone.

would make a great floating rig for fishing trips.. with the water proof casing on of course. could make for interesting angles while fighting the fish.

Since you aren't using this for drinking water or anything some Super Glue would make a better choice. Just set it up as you like then glue the seems. Your rig will look better after painting it.

Awesome diy tutorial! Just bought my first GP. This will be my first build! But I'm going to try to find a way to double or triple it to attach directly to a tripod, switch to fit it in a back pack, & hopefully find a way to attach it to a homemade jib. I think I'll be able to accomplish this by adding another t connection.Do you have any videos on a homemade pvc jib crane? That can work off of a standard tripod..? Suggestions? Thanks again for the awesome video!

could you do a video comparing the quality of using this type of setup vs just the camera without the rig. I'd like to see the difference. thanks

Great build! One suggestion: In the "About" section you should list everything used in your demo. PVC, GoPro Hero3, X Brand Mike, 1/4 X 20 bolts etc. Thanks!

This could be combined with your floating mount and would become even more versatile.

Okay so what if we made the handle higher and put a piece of wood on the bottom so we could put the gopro wherever we wan to the mount? Would it mess with the center of gravity?

The way your shotgun mic extends into the peripheral of the camera, won't the video pick up the view of the shotgun on the right side of the video? Or is that not a problem that you have faced?

Looks nice, I'm gonna have to make myself one. I've been wanting a srp tray for a while, but this looks almost as good, for a fraction of the price.

Hi Kyle, Is it possible if you could provide a link on the dimensions on this Rig as we could use this to cut the PVC at the DIY store rather than at home. Thanks, Grayson

Wouldn't the mic be in the GoPro's viewfinder since it is such a wide angle?

Possibly but it's huge. What about handing it all vertical. Like Handle, go pro, then mic under.
