Today I headed to Wang Lang Market (ตลาดวังหลัง) in the Thonburi area of Bangkok to sample Thai street food dishes from the south of Thailand and the Northeast (Isan) of Thailand around one famous Thai food market. I want to help you find authentic Thai street food wherever you are staying in Bangkok by giving you these little DIY food tours in every area of the city.
Our first stop was Ruam Tai, one of the best southern Thai food restaurants that I’ve been to in Bangkok.
I ordered the Kua Kling (dry curry), Gaeng Som (sour curry), Gaeng Tai Pla (fish innards curry) and Pad Sataw Moo (stink beans and pork in southern curry paste). Other dishes that I tried were the Pad Ped Pladuk (catfish in curry paste and Sup Gai Baan (‘village’ chicken soup) both of which were great but I wanted to keep the video from getting too long.
All of this came to 300 baht - £6.80 / $9.00.
Directions to Ruam Tai: goo.gl/maps/vU...
Next up I headed to my favourite Isan restaurant just outside of Wanglang Market on Arun Amarin Road called P’Pie Somtum Wanglang - ร้านส้มตำพี่ไพวังหลัง.
The chef here, Khun Nui, is an absolute legend. She can cook absolutely anything but her speciality is fiery Isan food from the Northeast. I ordered the Larb Bped (duck ‘salad’), which is the house speciality, Gai Yang (grilled chicken) Kor Moo Yang (grilled pork neck), Nam Tok Moo (grilled pork next salad), Prik Gai Tod (chicken wings) Khao Pod Tod (sweetcorn fritters), Yum Kahnom Jeen Plara (rice noodle salad with housemade fermented fish sauce and Tum Khao Pod (sweetcorn somtum).
Everything here is amazing but standouts are the duck larb and the grilled meats for me.
Directions to P’Pie Somtum Wanglang - ร้านส้มตำพี่ไพวังหลัง: goo.gl/maps/7M...
Bangkok can be a bit overwhelming if it's your first time visiting as it's so big, so I thought I'd do some videos to help break it down into sections so you can get some awesome street food wherever you go.
Directions and opening times to Wanglang Market (ตลาดวังหลัง)

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this KZbin channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

Odip ออดิบ - "elephant ear plant", related to taro. They use the stem of this plant, not the roots. The "parsley" looks like "water celery" to me. The veg you call "wasabi isaan" - I've never heard this before but it does look a lot like chrysanthemum greens
@theroamingcook

Yes that’s the one! She said taro and I’d never heard of it. ‘Water celery’ is just celery in the UK, it went that. It was flat leaf English parsley. The wasabi isan is apparently called wasabi rocket (arugula)

@@theroamingcook I’ve been out in Portugal for the last 15 months and go back to England in January,,was supposed to be in Thailand this winter but my mum needed a new shoulder,so next November I’ll make up for it,I used to work for a high end travel operator called Trailfinders and spent the whole of my working career in south east Asia,Indian ocean and the South Pacific ,staying in hotels and giving reviews for the company, until 3 years ago when my dad had a stroke I had to finish work and look after my dad, like I tell most people now the job sounds very glamorous but I can ashore you it’s not, when I used to go away in the 90s there was no Wi-Fi etc and I was only in my 20s and when I used to go to these beautiful private resorts on your own and there were no guests it used to get very monotonous with no one to speak to about the place,so I used to look forward to going to major cities and seeing life so to speak and not just palm trees and white beaches, loved going to Bangkok and Hong Kong to get clothes made for myself, really enjoyed watching your channel about Thai food I’m not into spicy but I do love a Massman ,I’ll enjoy watching the video tomorrow and I enjoy watching GTM I’ve been watching him since it started,,, peace and happiness and merry Christmas to your family Gary,,

Ow-dip(ออดิบ) is the southern name of khuun(as coon in raccoon) it's called green taro or indian taro in English. it's quite srcay for me to eat this plant because there's a poisonous plant called hora(โหรา) that looks exactly like khuun in layman's eyes, and you could die an agony death if you eat the wrong plant.

I also like to eat those currys with Khanom jeen noodles. I like to eat those southern currys when they are very spicy.oo man plara is my favorite fish, especially when they fry it crispy and with fish sauce, lime and chili's .. I also prefer to eat isan there is much more flavor to it…but what you mean by plara is the sauce, the water in which the plara (fish) is fermented, but I also like that plara liquid, they do that in sumtam..love that stuff.

Hey Gary, just discovered your channel randomly while looking up info on Trat, must say, love your videos. Love that you focus on street food, and enjoy your presentation style. I find lots of food bloggers kind of off-putting, trying really too hard or too over the top (i.e. like Weins), but you do a great job and your passion for the food shows, please keep up the good work. Anyways, I'm not writing to just kiss your ass, I have a suggestion - as a frequent visitor to Thailand (8 times over the last 25 years), I've learned to plan out most of my days in Bangkok by rail station. Motorbike is really not an option for me in Bangkok, and Taxi's are too unpredictable with the traffic. So I mostly plan out what I want to do, then see what MRT or BTS stations I need to access, then look up what food options I can get to near those stations. I feel like most people plan their time the same way in Bangkok. What would be great is if there was some way to find your bangkok videos by rail station. Maybe it's just a matter of putting on hashtags (#MRT-BangWa), or what might even be better is if you have a single google map with custom pins for all your reviews. Not sure what the best answer is, just a suggestion on a use case that might be helpful for your viewers. Anyways, keep up the great work, can't wait till I get back to Thailand again and hit up some of the restaurants in your videos!

Hey Kevin, I’m so happy you’ve found the channel and are enjoying the videos. I really like your idea, I was actually going to try and do a series where I show places to eat at every BTS and MRT station but wasn’t sure anyone would be into it. I’ll definitely look into updating my current videos with the hashtags for the relevant stations and see if it works. Thanks for the suggestion, it’s nice to have some constructive feedback!
