I don't know Mike... if an S300 can run an 8-sec AWD Civic... hard to justify the change. It's O.G., it's nostalgic, and it's made FOR our beloved Honda's (doesn't fit any other car).

The simple fact the ECU are 30 years old is enough reason to change. Can't tell you how many stock ECUs are trash just from age. For every 1 good ECU I've seen like 30 bad ones. Plus you need a trusted soldering installer, and harness installer .. it's a good system like he said. But once you get a GREAT standalone in your car you'll never want to go back. More power, more reliable more tuneability, more inputs and outputs, easy to go straight to COP. Big, traction control, CANBUS capabilities, self learning... So many ecu out there are well above the capabilities of hondata at the same price now.

The biggest barrier by far for FuelTech on this platform is going to be the complexity and expense of wiring and sensors. It doesn't stop at just the ECU, you're going to have to find someone to modify FuelTechs universal harness or pay for a custom one, switch to T1 cam trigger if you haven't already as well as switching to coils, either FuelTechs or Smart. This is a really big issue if you already have a custom Rywire/WireWorx or other custom harness that now has to be scrapped or adapted to the FuelTech unit. As of right now Haltech and AEM still have much more accessible standalones, mostly because they're plug and plug.

Also If u are a street car and need to pass an obd2 inspection in your state to get ur car tagged u can't because they won't be able to plug into ur OBD2 port for their computer to read and pass the emissions test, depending on the year of ur vehicle. Some people like their street rippers. Correct me if I'm wrong.

@@JeffreyGunner Where I live you have the option of plugging into OBD2 port or a weird ignition wire clamp. The reason is for smogging pre OBD2(96) cars and also for when the OBD2 port is problematic to read. I get issues with the OBD2 port and have to constantly use electronic cleaning spray in the port.

My only issue with FuelTech and other stand alone systems, is for us street car guys that don't have full blown, trailered race cars and live in states that require reading from the obd2 port for vehicle inspections, the standalone systems can never "fool" the inspection systems, nor send data via the obd2 port. Where I live (in NY), I have to run kpro to keep the car legal.

Last year I had my Tax check and was ready to go from Kpro 4 to Fueltech ft450. I researched for weeks and came to the conclusion there was NOT enough support for Honda’s at the time. Support for doing the wiring and support for the initial setup etc. then you get into the trigger wheel and all that. I ABSOLUTELY loved the all in one dash/ecu. But the complexities and wiring etc seem quite DAUNTING. I’m quite savvy with doing wiring too and it STILL seemed like a gamble. You spend ALL that money and do ALL that wiring work you want it to ACTUALLY RUN afterwards. Fuel tech didn’t seem 100 percent full proof.

For a classic OBD1 Honda Civic you can still turbo it and get hondata for 500, and you said that the entry level $1,000 kit from fuel tech "might not have enough inputs" for a turbo setup, even though you said that the entry level price was comparable between the two. I love fuel tech they are awesome but it is also nice to have the screen available separately also if you are trying to save money so having it always included and costing hundreds more dollars doesn't seem like such an advantage to me as it is being advertised.

its the ECU thats the problem, look for a Vtec p28 on ebay... its like $200 bucks. the s300 unit is $495. if you want coil on plug kit.. 400 bucks. Traction control on hondata 600 Bucks. I'm still on the fence, I've got a 89 crx with a built b16. I'm still running OBD0 PR3(stock) and PW0(Enjin chip) ECU's. I scored a P28 from a wrecking yard out of a auto Ex, haven't confirmed it works but I was planning on going OBD1 s300. Bought another P28 for $250 and realized my wideband was not wired properly to the ECU. I paid $270 for a Hako solder pump because my main screw up was desoldering. All in all I spend over $1k. I would have rather worked on wiring than ECU boards.

I agree 100% at this point i would rather put money toward a k swap and just run a k-pro. Obd1 hondas chipped ecu is the way to go. You could literaly just use crome or hts and a cheap burner and tune your own car for like 25$ lmao. A factory ecu has great throttle response and plug and play its hard to beat.

Quick Q&A I'm in the process in doing a k series NA build, haven't picked up a ECU as of yet. My Q is with this item all I would need is the factory ECU without going with Kpro? Have a 06 TSX with Type R Gear box 6speed. Thanks again for all your post.

You don’t need a “hi tech” ECU, there is majority preference for hondata because it just work well, realible and OEM. Reasons to swap for fuel tech are meaning less, I got my hondata with AIM logger and works like a clock

I love my Hondas. They will only ever be clean street cars, and for that. Hondata is good enough for me. Not everyone wants to pay over a g for tuning. Even Moates demon is good enough for most people.

Serious question, what about someone who buys a new platform like the ‘22 Civic Si and they just want a flash tune. Hondata already has a $700 “plug and play” solution. Is there a FuelTech alternative catered to the layman/non-mechanic?
@kekistani2373
@kekistani2373 2 жыл бұрын
the difference is flashpro is to flash the stock ecu. Hondata has to follow the stock ECU's logic. Why you cannot run a BOV in 10th and 11th gen civics unless you run motec. Fueltech is not ideal for these newer cars. Fueltech is a STANDALONE ecu, you can bypass so many features that hondata or ktuner cannot do. In other words, you can reach for the stars with standalones

What I learned as an IT person is that hardware is always cheap. It is software and support that is expensive. How many tuners know how to use the software?

You cnt just say sell your hondata ecu or piggyback if the best tuner you know is use to tuning on hondata at the end of the day you get the programmable ecu or tuning solutions based on what your tuner prefers Hondata is known to run 8s so at the end of the day hondata is evolving and like flashpro they have basemaps specifically for the 8th gen 9th gen 10th gen si whether you want to go turbo nitrous sc or allmotor...you use what your tuner is more comfortable using
