I just had to watch, not because I wanted tonlearn how to build outdoor wooden furniture, but to bring back some memories. I am 51 now, and back when I was between 19, 23 I worked in a wood shop building outdoorcwooden furniture. We built the same project as you were working on We called it a Set-tea. of course we had our own design , and other types of furniture. I made a very good living doing it. I am also considering doing it again. Thank you , you were an inspuration to me.

Going to be giving this a shot in the next couple of weeks. This will be my most ambitious project to date. I was wanting to build it earlier in the year but lumber prices made it a prohibitive

I just built this out of pine in a weekend and I would recommend one change. The overall size is a little snug for a full grown adult male. id recommend making it 6 in longer, giving each seat 3 inches of width. I'd also go 3 more inches taller on the back rest and 3 more inches in over all depth, (i like to slouch). And since I used pine I prestained all the wood with Olympic deck stain before i made any cuts which went pretty quick.

I think a center support would be a good idea too. (My wife and I are little on the larger size). Also, maybe adjust the dimensions for a deeper seat both bottom and back to accommodate a cushion of choice. Otherwise, I love it! It's a great design and I hope to build one soon! Cheers from Chattanooga, TN!

Just built one using pine due to cost. I had a blast with it. I plan on making a second but need to widen the seat area for a slightly bigger person. Thank you for making your videos and plans so easy to follow. I am new to this wood working thing and am really enjoying it.

Great project, and easy to build. A couple of hints for the "less practiced" (like me): Be sure to think about the finished side of your lumber when making your cuts. I used cedar which had a rough side and a smooth side. To remain consistent, one set of chair support pieces need to be reversed in that situation. It's also helpful to do an initial sanding of the lumber before putting it together. Finally, instead of rounding off the back supports at the top, I cut a cap piece for both chairs out of 1x6 and then ripped it to fit. It gave it a nice finished look. Thanks for putting this out there for all of us to enjoy!

Hey Pete! I made this and I took your suggestion and modified it. I closed the opening under the table to make a small storage area. I also added slats across the back to give it a more sophisticated look. I used your plans and changed them up a bit to make a chair. I made it king size for us Big guys.

I just want to thank you for the plans on this bench. I'm almost finish with the bench and I just need to add the last few wood planks. After sitting in the bench, I would suggest two areas I would change. One change would be putting the top brace that holds the legs together on the outside. The other change would be to make the seats 20 inches apart to give yourself more room. The 16 inch spacing seem to be a little too cramped

Great project. I plan to build this. However, if you build this with cedar and it will be outside you want to either glue or use stainless steel hardware because cedar expands and contracts with temperature changes and deck screws will work loss. Thanks for posting.

@DIYPETE

+John Kalends Hi John, you can certainly scale it down to work for kids. You could shorten the legs, cut the slats shorter to make the width smaller, and use 1 or so less horizontal slats for the seat and back rest. You'll need to experiment a bit to get what your are looking for. But it's not too hard to do. Cheers

Awesome video! Quick question. Are the 1"x4"s and 1"x6"s true, or are they slightly thinner, say .75" X3.75" and .75"X5.75" My big concern is bending if they are not thick enough. Thanks!
@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! A 2x4 is 1 1/2 inches thick by 3 1/2 inches wide. a 1x6 is 3/4 inches thick by 5 1/2 inches wide. Bending hasn't been an issue with all the support under each slat. Cheers

@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 8 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeremy! If the furniture is going under a porch it does fine --- but the sun and rain will take a toll on it if outside all the time. You can sand and re-seal when needed. But you can tell the spots where it has been worn away and sometimes it will gray a bit in those spots. I've been using deck stain on my furniture now and it has been what I've moved towards recommending. I don't have the clear finish that I love -- but re-staining it makes it look brand new and it seems to do a better job outside withstanding the elements. Thank you for this! I’m a neewbie from Sweden ! I’m starting to learn by doing these diy projects and i’m slowly getting there. It’s a bit confusing for me since i have to learn the metric or use a inch to mm converter. I’m almost done with the cutting now, the only thing i don’t understand is the 15 angle cut. Should the piece be 24 5/16 where i make the cut? Or at the edge? I hope you see this soon! Thanks again! / Charlie

Great to hear from you Charlie and I hope you are doing well over in Sweden! The cut should measure 24 5/16 from the short point to the long point. Best of luck!

I"m guessing this will make the chair 16ish inches from the ground? I"m taller and would rather have a higher chair. do I just add a couple inches on the cuts for the boards holding the seat?
@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, modifying the height is pretty simple and adding the extra height would get you there.

I'm building this for the first time and I have the frame built but to me the bench looks too low to the ground. I don't have anymore wood to make the legs longer, so is it supposed to be low? Im sure it's a dumb question and yes I followed the plans

When applying the seat planks, back planks and the table top, can I use an air nailer instead of the screws?

Hi! I'd recommend screws as they are going to hold up better over time and will make a much stronger connection. Cheers!

another great video pete thanks! can I use that val spar on a new cedar deck so everything would match?
@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 8 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks so much for watching. To be honest, I'd use a deck stain on the deck ( something either semi-transparent or transparent ) - and probably the same on the chair. I've moved away a bit from the Helmsman spar varnish because if you don't stay on top of it the wood can gray and it's hard to make it look nice again with another coat. While with a deck stain it is much easier in my experience to simply add a coat or two every few years. Cheers!

I have some wood I would mill: are your specs for store bought nominal dimensions or actual size dimensions? Great video. Thanks.
@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony! The store bought wood I refer to as 2x4 / 2x6 etc --- they are actually 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 or 1 1/1 x 5 1/2". So you'd want to mill them down to the smaller dimensions if that makes sense. Cheers!

what kind of blade do you use on your mitre saw? a ripping blade or a finishing blade?
@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Andrew! It depends what I am working on - But I generally use sort of a multi purpose blade with a few more teeth then a ripping saw. If I am framing walls I'll use a ripping blade - if I'm working with nicer quality woods like walnut etc I'll throw in a finish blade.

Just built this bench, thank you! Do you have similar plans for a Triple-chair bench with table…(looking for the same but angled /Curved for around the fire pit. yes I know 2 can be built… But it has to do with space. Thank you in advance 👍🏽 or has anybody seen what I’m describing?

Hi K! I don't have plans for a triple bench at the time, but I don think you'd be able to modify the double fairly easy with a little trial and error. Best of luck! Cheers!!

Hey Pete thanks for the plans made one today and I love it. I used yellow pine but I'm not really sure what exactly to use to finish it. I don't want to paint it but I'm not sure what finish to buy it seems like there are many options and finishes any suggestions?

+John Kalends Hey John, I'd either use a deck stain or an outdoor spar urethane to maintain the wood grain. Where part of the country are you in?
@KCFarms
@KCFarms 9 жыл бұрын
+DIY PETE Florida, after the urathane do I need anything else? Will it be sticky? Sorry for all the questions this is my first build
@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 9 жыл бұрын
+John Kalends Hi John, I'd do 2 to 3 coats of urethane. You can lightly sand with 500 grit paper at the end (after last coat is completely dry) -- to remove and rough spots on the arms and anywhere you might run your hands. Urethane takes quite a few hours to completely cure, so it will be tacky until it completely cures. But once it does cure, it will not be sticky.

New guy here - If I wanted to use pine (to save $ on materials) and just stain it a different color, could I sand all of my pieces and do the staining prior to assembly? There are some hard to reach places once it is assembled. Any tips/help would be greatly appreciated!
@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Derek! You can definitely build it out of pine to save on materials. A lot of folks do. You can also stain prior to assembling if you'd prefer. Spraying the stain is another option. Cheers!

Hi Pete, thanks for all the great videos:) how much did the cedar wood cost for this project?
@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 10 жыл бұрын
melly2912 Hi! Thanks so much! I'm not sure I put the cost together on that project but I want to say all the wood came to around $90 to $110 or so. The cedar is definitely more expensive then pine, but is what I'd recommend for outdoor furniture that is not painted. It will look great and last for years to come :)

Great tutorial but one important thing was missing - making sure your frame is square & level. I built one using the precise measurements but my structure was noticably out of square after attaching the rear support and the chair back supports.

+jonathan Smith Hi Jonathan! Thanks for reaching out. Right now we have the projects tab with the various categories like wood, metal, etc. And the plans page with links to the projects as well. I agree though, I need to work on better organizing the site. Other outdoor projects include the patio bar, ice chest, LED concrete table, firewood rack, and others. I'll make it a priority to get things organized better on the site. Thanks so much for your feedback, I appreciate it and want to make it easy for viewers to find projects!
