I just had to watch, not because I wanted tonlearn how to build outdoor wooden furniture, but to bring back some memories. I am 51 now, and back when I was between 19, 23 I worked in a wood shop building outdoorcwooden furniture. We built the same project as you were working on We called it a Set-tea. of course we had our own design , and other types of furniture. I made a very good living doing it. I am also considering doing it again. Thank you , you were an inspuration to me.

Going to be giving this a shot in the next couple of weeks. This will be my most ambitious project to date. I was wanting to build it earlier in the year but lumber prices made it a prohibitive

I just built this out of pine in a weekend and I would recommend one change. The overall size is a little snug for a full grown adult male. id recommend making it 6 in longer, giving each seat 3 inches of width. I'd also go 3 more inches taller on the back rest and 3 more inches in over all depth, (i like to slouch). And since I used pine I prestained all the wood with Olympic deck stain before i made any cuts which went pretty quick.
@billgreen54902 жыл бұрын
I think a center support would be a good idea too. (My wife and I are little on the larger size). Also, maybe adjust the dimensions for a deeper seat both bottom and back to accommodate a cushion of choice. Otherwise, I love it! It's a great design and I hope to build one soon! Cheers from Chattanooga, TN!

Great project, and easy to build. A couple of hints for the "less practiced" (like me): Be sure to think about the finished side of your lumber when making your cuts. I used cedar which had a rough side and a smooth side. To remain consistent, one set of chair support pieces need to be reversed in that situation. It's also helpful to do an initial sanding of the lumber before putting it together. Finally, instead of rounding off the back supports at the top, I cut a cap piece for both chairs out of 1x6 and then ripped it to fit. It gave it a nice finished look. Thanks for putting this out there for all of us to enjoy!

You could shorten the legs, cut the slats shorter to make the width smaller, and use 1 or so less horizontal slats for the seat and back rest. I was just wondering if it would be a good idea to attach the seating supports to the front 2x6 with pocket screws instead of through the front? Also, once you apply the finish, is there something you use to clean your brush. Wasn't sure what you would suggest.
@DIYPETE7 жыл бұрын
Hey John! Yes, pocket holes and wood glue would definitely work. I clean the brush with paint thinner and a wire brush.
@kevingrove63404 жыл бұрын
Awesome video! Quick question. Are the 1"x4"s and 1"x6"s true, or are they slightly thinner, say .75" X3.75" and .75"X5.75" My big concern is bending if they are not thick enough. Thanks!
@DIYPETE4 жыл бұрын
Hi! A 2x4 is 1 1/2 inches thick by 3 1/2 inches wide. a 1x6 is 3/4 inches thick by 5 1/2 inches wide. Bending hasn't been an issue with all the support under each slat. Cheers
@jeremyhenderson48998 жыл бұрын
Great video, thanks for posting! How has the spar urethane finish held up - are you happy with it? Thanks.
@DIYPETE8 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeremy! If the furniture is going under a porch it does fine --- but the sun and rain will take a toll on it if outside all the time. You can sand and re-seal when needed. But you can tell the spots where it has been worn away and sometimes it will gray a bit in those spots. I've been using deck stain on my furniture now and it has been what I've moved towards recommending. I don't have the clear finish that I love -- but re-staining it makes it look brand new and it seems to do a better job outside withstanding the elements. another great video pete thanks! can I use that val spar on a new cedar deck so everything would match?
@DIYPETE8 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks so much for watching. To be honest, I'd use a deck stain on the deck ( something either semi-transparent or transparent ) - and probably the same on the chair. I've moved away a bit from the Helmsman spar varnish because if you don't stay on top of it the wood can gray and it's hard to make it look nice again with another coat. While with a deck stain it is much easier in my experience to simply add a coat or two every few years. Cheers!

Hi Tony! The store bought wood I refer to as 2x4 / 2x6 etc --- they are actually 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 or 1 1/1 x 5 1/2". So you'd want to mill them down to the smaller dimensions if that makes sense. Cheers!

what kind of blade do you use on your mitre saw? a ripping blade or a finishing blade?
@DIYPETE7 жыл бұрын
Hey Andrew! It depends what I am working on - But I generally use sort of a multi purpose blade with a few more teeth then a ripping saw. If I am framing walls I'll use a ripping blade - if I'm working with nicer quality woods like walnut etc I'll throw in a finish blade.

Hey Pete thanks for the plans made one today and I love it. I used yellow pine but I'm not really sure what exactly to use to finish it. I don't want to paint it but I'm not sure what finish to buy it seems like there are many options and finishes any suggestions?

+John Kalends Hey John, I'd either use a deck stain or an outdoor spar urethane to maintain the wood grain. Where part of the country are you in?

+DIY PETE Florida, after the urathane do I need anything else? Will it be sticky? Sorry for all the questions this is my first build

+John Kalends Hi John, I'd do 2 to 3 coats of urethane. You can lightly sand with 500 grit paper at the end (after last coat is completely dry) -- to remove and rough spots on the arms and anywhere you might run your hands. Urethane takes quite a few hours to completely cure, so it will be tacky until it completely cures. But once it does cure, it will not be sticky.

New guy here - If I wanted to use pine (to save $ on materials) and just stain it a different color, could I sand all of my pieces and do the staining prior to assembly? There are some hard to reach places once it is assembled. Any tips/help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Derek! You can definitely build it out of pine to save on materials. A lot of folks do. You can also stain prior to assembling if you'd prefer. Spraying the stain is another option. Cheers!

I love this idea so much. Thanks for sharing. I am currently building a space for viewing small scale theatre show where people can watch and snack on something at the same time. I want to try your plan.

Hi Pete, thanks for all the great videos:) how much did the cedar wood cost for this project?
@DIYPETE10 жыл бұрын
melly2912 Hi! Thanks so much! I'm not sure I put the cost together on that project but I want to say all the wood came to around $90 to $110 or so. The cedar is definitely more expensive then pine, but is what I'd recommend for outdoor furniture that is not painted. It will look great and last for years to come :)

Great tutorial but one important thing was missing - making sure your frame is square & level. I built one using the precise measurements but my structure was noticably out of square after attaching the rear support and the chair back supports.

What happened to the website? The first time I got on it had a list of projects by category. Tables, Chairs, Benches ect. Just made the double bench and looking to make more outdoor furniture. Help! Thanks Pete

+jonathan Smith Hi Jonathan! Thanks for reaching out. Right now we have the projects tab with the various categories like wood, metal, etc. And the plans page with links to the projects as well. I agree though, I need to work on better organizing the site. Other outdoor projects include the patio bar, ice chest, LED concrete table, firewood rack, and others. I'll make it a priority to get things organized better on the site. Thanks so much for your feedback, I appreciate it and want to make it easy for viewers to find projects!
