I put the "Famco Round Base Chimney Vacuum Cap" on my chimney today, it finally came in. I got the 10 inch one and used two hose clamps to snug it at the base to the round ceramic chimney stack, and it fit like a glove. I took the black square with the screen on it off, I would love to show you which one I purchased and what it looks like, but they keep auto-deleting my posts because of the link. I am so aggravated because I had a really nice well detailed paragraph on everything and when I included tp show you what I am talking about they auto deleted my whole comment!!! Lookup the "Famco Round Base Chimney Vacuum Cap" comes in galvanized or stainless. Since I just put it up there today, I need to see how this works once we get a windy day here.

@DIYwithMichaelBorders If you do a search and type in Round chimney vacuum cap. It's made out of steel and it looks like a knight's helmet.

Is there something that can be put on the top outside so the winds cant get inside. because where im moving i may run into this problem in indiana ... just was wondering ..

Good morning Joe, most exhaust ductwork is routed in a way to far lower the access for air to be blown in. We are talking WINDY WINDY days. 😁👍

Thanks for watching. Does your furnace ductwork have any turns or is it more straight? Long story short, if this is a continuous issue, you may need a license technician to come in and reroute your ductwork to alleviate wind and air backflow

Get a wind resistant chimney cap, I had the black square with the screen at the top and I had to get one that prevents down-drafting since so much air was coming down into my flue pipe.

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders I wanted to make my story as I can of short on my findings. I have lived at my house for going on 9 years and even when bitter cold days my furnace held temperature. When I moved in there was a round-ball like cap that was up there. After I very windy day 2 years ago it broke and blew it off the chimney top into the back yard!! I figured I'll just go to home depot and get a standard black-square screen one to put on the top of the chimney fitting. After a couple very cold days my heat was not keeping up and when we got down to zero it was 59 degrees in the house! Temperatures in the 20's, 30's and 40's and higher worked just fine with no issues. My mom even asked me "you have been there for almost 9 years and why are you all of a sudden having this problem trouble heating the house on very cold days?" Good question, it made me think more and more that the only thing I changed was the chimney cap at the top of the chimney. I believe that on very cold/windy days the dense cold air blowing across the top of the flue outside was creating a down-draft, causing flame rollouts, and shutting my furnace down leaving the blower running. Once the furnace reset it probably re-lit the burners again and ran until that same cycle happened again. My furnace is up in the attic so my flue pipe goes into the brick about 5 feet from the top of the flue opening. With my furnace being in the attic it was hard to tell (I am not actually up there to physically see that if my burners were cut-off) but feeling the luke-warm air out of the vents made me think "its running though so what is the problem?" Our furnace guy that inspects every year came out and looked it over and he even said "its running fine to me, it's just very cold outside" so thank you for charging me $200.00 just to come out and say that. I believe the cap that was up there was more of a "cowl-wind resistant type cap" that prevented downdrafts and enhanced updrafts I didn't think anything of it being a round-like cowl with slits on it, thought maybe just decorative piece. There probably had to be a reason why that kind was up there to begin with when I moved in, and the standard black-squared with the screen that I put up there was causing terrible heating on windy/cold days. The black square is probably not allowing heating my flue shaft good enough to get a good "draw" going up to come out the top and instead blowing my fire out. I ordered a "Round Base Chimney Vacuum Cap" search that in Amazon. I cant share the link because KZbin will pull down my comment since it contains a link. Start easy, you probably just need a simple cap to stop or limit downdrafts.

@@karlswert3348 Good morning to you ☕️ We can’t thank you enough for sharing your experience and you’ve got us thinking as well. It is very likely that the previous installed cap is the critical point in this equation. Awesome job ordering a new cap/adapter. That will hopefully return your system back to normal configuration and operation. Living there for 9 years and not having any issues until that cap came off is where you hit it perfectly … it just didn’t seem right. Not many people actually realize the effects a windy day can have on their furnace system…and…if it’s not properly installed and equipped to handle an aggressive amount of airflow (or back-flow of air) coming into the exhaust ductwork…it will not be able to perform as it should. That’s why we found it very important to film this video and get this information out to the DIY community. We are very much looking forward to hearing back from you on how your replacement cap/adapter helps your systems operation. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience. 🧰
