@jimbarron8688 Жыл бұрын
The flame sensor signal is very small measured at approx. 4-7 micro amps DC. Any oxidation or the build up of mercaptan on the sensing rod will impede this signal and shut off the gas valve circuit on flame failure. Keeping it clean with a few light passes of very fine steel wool is the best prevention.

You are a lifesaver. I noticed the heat wasn’t kicking on and the flame would only ignite for like 10 seconds then shut off. I removed the filter to make sure it wasn’t an airflow issue and it still happened. The flame light on the control board would blink when the flame was on. I cleaned the flame sensor with some sandpaper and reinstalled, now the flame stays on and the light on the board is solid instead of blinking so I think it worked. Seriously huge thanks to you for saving me the money and headache.

Interesting, I can’t tell on my unit which part of two is the flame sensor. Theres two possibilities. But my heater sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. It seems to work after turning my system off for a bit and then turning it back on. So now I’m wondering if my thermostat control limits how many times my heater can turn on in a given amount of time, like an hour. I’ve heard that some systems have controls to set the limits on how many times a heater or AC could turn on in an hour or so.
@DIYwithMichaelBorders10 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching, that’s definitely a possibility. In the meantime, are any of your floor vents throughout your home covered in any way? All it takes is one floor vent to be covered by a rug or a dresser, causing a backflow of air pressure that the furnace can detect and lead to a system shut down for safety purposes.

No brush guys you don’t wanna scratch that. Use a dollar bill or a piece of the finest wet dry sandpaper that sold that’s just about like smooth paper you don’t wanna scratch that ride or will start collecting carbon and dust and dirt and everything on it which causes the problem.
@teegees Жыл бұрын
This is indeed a very common issue. You can also use fine grit sand paper to clean the sensor rod. I find it’s more effective than the brush as it covers more surface area in a single stroke, and you can modulate the grinding pressure more easily as well.

Is it not odd that the blower comes on well before the inducer does? The inducer has failsafes on it which cause same issue but i always thought it would turn on the inducer to clear any residual in the exchanger then establish flame to heat the exchanger finally turning on the blower so it doesnt blow a bunch of cold air in..

My themostat accidently got switched from heat to cool. After awhile; when I noticed it, I put it in the off position, then later on heat. Now, quite often, it will start then stop after just a couple seconds. Could the switch from heat to cool have messed something up?

So mine is making a loud bang when it shuts off I seriously don't know if it's always done that I've only lived here for 4 months and you know it's just now winter so you would think I'd know but is this normal?

Good morning, we are drinking our morning coffee answering any and all questions for the DIY community. This is usually caused by a worn out blower fan mount. The large blower fan can begin spinning in a slightly offset manner while furnace is running. After furnace turns off, the blower fan begins to wind down and once at a slower rotation speed, it sometimes hits the mount and makes a bang or clunk sound.

my flame sensor is right next to the pilot light. the pilot stays lite and the burner turns on, but the heater only stays on for about 10 to 20 seconds at a time. i cleaned the sensor and bypassed the thermal fuse above it. its still doing the same thing. brand new filter, and the output register is completely open. any tips to solve this issue? its a really old ruud furnace, the flame sensor wire looks like a 1/4" copper tube instead of a wire.

Thanks for watching, any update? Do you see any sporadic behaviors with burner tubes and flames? If the flames are not coming out of burners in a straight, organized manner, sensors will pick up on that sporadic behavior and shut system down.

My furnace takes more than 3 hours to warm up the house on the coldest winter days, and it's been turning off and back on again after blowing air. The cycle happens up to 8 times in the first hour, and only in the morning. Why does this happen only when I heat the house for the first time in the morning?
@DIYwithMichaelBorders2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, it’s possible that your furnace is short cycling. We recommend inspecting your filter, it dirty, it should be replaced. If a new filter doesn’t help, inspect your blower fan. If it’s very dirty, the added weight of the dust or ash-like soot can lead to this. Cleaning it will go a long way.

I'm working on a Mr.Cool furnace. Brand New, didn't run more than 2 weeks and it started having the issue described in this video. Its a pretty clean looking sensor, and has worked at times without failing. but then starts failing and don't stop. It is strange that the furnace doesn't give an error code of it, or go into a lock-out status, but just keeps trying to starts, starts, and then stops, restarting the process all over.
@DIYwithMichaelBorders2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Being only two weeks old, you shouldn’t have any issues whatsoever, that’s a bummer. By chance, are any of your vents blocked by either a rug, couch, or any type of furniture? A blocked vent, mainly on the floor, can cause back-pressure and lead to furnace operating with sporadic behaviors as you mentioned. If not, is your furnace covered under warranty by the company that installed it?
@NarFlux2 жыл бұрын
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders the gentlemen whose furnance it is I am working on, says it should be covered under warranty. The pressure switch does not seem to be what is cutting it out, so I don't believe it is a vent issue. The inlet and outlet vents are not blocked. The Flame Sensor does not give very consistent ohms readings when I remove it and test it. So I am wondering if it is just a defective flame sensor. Do you happen to know what is happening in the board to sense the 10 mA it is supposed to be generating? What circuit board component could be checked as a possible cause?
@DIYwithMichaelBorders2 жыл бұрын
@@NarFlux Thanks for the follow up, that’s very possible. The flame sensor should have constant ohms. Do you see any sporadic behavior in terms of the burners? In other words, are the flames coming out of burner tubes straight or is any of the flames breaking their constant straight projection and fraying out or back? If so, additional sensors will need to be replaced. However, being brand new, it shouldn’t be any of the sensors…🤔
@NarFlux2 жыл бұрын
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders the flames come out of the burner tubes without any abnormalities. Straight and steady. Its just something cuts the power right out. The flame sensor shows about 57 Volts to it when the system is powered and trying to start.

Would this still be the issue if the system works sometimes? Or is there something else wrong. My furnace will work just fine for a week then it will act up like the video states

Thanks for watching & it’s very possible. There may be a part that is intermittently working, in other words...in its early stages of failure.
