Ok folks just to confirm somethings. This was in latest firmware I am well aware of the states of Yaw Washout and Vortex Ring State, if I felt this was just washout there would not be a video on it. I know what they are and this not that. While the initial loss of altitude would be washout then craft appears to either crash the gyro or reset it’s self upside down. That is not normal. Ciniwhoops are well known to wash out and that’s something that’s easy to compensate for. I absolutely can see that the start of this is with washout however it’s what is happening after that point is the issue. If you going to come on here and post comments that “people should know how to fly” or “it’s normal” please don’t. Your not dealing with a DJI pilot here that does not know how to fly in Acro or what should or should not happen
@FPV-TV4192 жыл бұрын
100% agree. I'm no beginner. I've had other whoops that you do get wash out and instability, but the avata is doing things it's not supposed to! It's not normal whoop instability, it's getting confused somehow. So far every time I've replicated this, at height, it's recoverable. Either by regaining control, or the one occasion where it did what yours did, I hit the oh shit button and it saved it. It was heading straight for the ground the same as yours did. I recommend testing again at height. So far I've done this over 10 times in one 5 min flight and managed to recover it every time. 🙃 (btw not saying this is a fix, dji need to sort this asap)! Edit: I don't currently have another whoop, but it would be interesting to do the same moderately hard flat yaw/ roll turn on the avata and a "normal " whoop... and see the difference.

This will give you the best possibility to find ejected parts. The problems happen when you pick up your drone and forget where it crashed/landed.

I was sent 5 videos of this issue before I went out. All of them were a simple yaw and it dropped. I have been building and flying DJI aircraft before most people knew DJI even existed. To say this is pilot error is billshit. If you take note it’s not how hard you fly it it’s the specific Yaw turn. That is not washout. I have had ring vortex, washout and every kind of issue there is over the years and this is not normal. All the videos I was shared showed something that should not happen. On the way down I tried to disarm and it would not so I moved to GPS to see if it would kill it and it would not so then in the end it luckily threw the pack. This os a very real issue.

It's almost as if it thinks the flight controller has been turned upside down when this happens. Perhaps it's a numeric overflow (or underflow) (modulus) error on extreme units of yaw measurement by the yaw gyro -- but only in one direction. It definitely flips complete inverted and probably keeps bouncing around because the flight stabilization software may have actually crashed and is therefore effectively doing nothing at that stage and becomes unresponsive to control inputs.

@@MadRC I've seen other Avata crash vids on YT where the same thing happens... the quad just keeps screaming until the battery is pulled. There was one where the guy simply switched from GPS mode to manual and the craft *instantly* pitched over (like in this video) and then sat on the ground screaming its guts out and unresponsive to the RC link. This kind of indicates that there may be more than one way to trigger this FC crash.

I think it’s a battery issue in conjunction with undersized motors….. When the quad yaws it relies on increasing the torque of two motors and decreasing the torque of two other motors. When you hit a yaw maneuver those torque increases require a quick current draw. The battery on the Avata is a Li-ion with a pretty low c rating so can’t draw too much current quickly. It gives high flight times compared to li-po but at the expense of low current draw. The motors are smaller than typical 3inch whoops… usually use 2004 or 2204 which are a lot wider and give more torque. These with a liPo give great yaw authority. I don’t think it can be programmed out and is most likely this hardware issue. Yaw into the wind and it’s a lot more resistance so that may be why you can yaw in one direction fine but not another. You can turn your yaw rates down and that should help

@@DG-es2st I'm not sure yet. Whenever you push the boundaries of what a product is capable of... it's like having a car that can do 100 mph and blaming the manufacturer when you crash that car doing that 100 mph in a 30 mph corner. That's all I'm saying. The battery size and placement, the weight of the drone, the thickness of the prop guards, the frame thickness/ design, etc present limitations and flight characteristics that the Pilot must consider when operating this drone. There's a problem with fly aways too. That's what was happening when yours was rolling and trying to fly. Yes, I fly the Avanta in full manual mode and yes I have experienced the left yaw problem, but it happened while I was in sport mode. I use mine, along with other machines, in my filming business. This problem happened once in the two weeks I have been flying it. I was chasing a side-by-side down a dirt road, proceeding to turn left gently into a parallel field and continue the chase. As I turned left, the Avata suddenly pitched down and to the left more. Fortunately, I regained control before hitting anything, but it happens fast and there's nothing you can do to stop it until it allows you to have control again. Other than this one occurrence, my Avata has been an outstanding machine for certain work in tight places.

The DJI FPV didn't have the issue where a side wind turn made it drop, but it did have the issue of going into Tunnel mode after a crash. My first flight with the FPV (full manual), I did a loop, came a tad too low and the battery touched a clump of grass, causing it to tip upside down. The drone went full throttle, upside down and was ignoring the controller, so wouldn't shut off! If a prop hit a stone, the drone could've tilted enough to fly full throttle into my face. I had to grab it and pull the battery lead. Very scary and very dangerous. The drone wouldn't have been damaged, by the crash, but going full throttle, upside down, ripped one of the motors out.

I just installed the C157 motors and tested the Avata in manual mode throwing in a few hard yaws, flips and rolls. When the battery was around 40% during a clockwise yaw the Avata decided t0 take a dirt nap. When I retrieved the quad it was upside down (in the mud of course) with the motors running like it was armed, when I tried to pick it up the motors would go to full speed so I pulled the plug to shut it down. I did have the "impact detected" message but I have no way to see exactly when that did appear (next time I'll watch for it). After the Avata sends the "impact detected" message I'm wondering whether that is the point when all control is lost, I did not have any control when it decided to have a gravity attack.

Hi Ian, just want to know your opinion on this point: for me, the DJI Avata is under-powered and over weight. Firstly, I think it needs significantly more motor stator volumn to handle it's weight, maybe a motor in the 22xx range. Secondly, does it fly with props out? If so, doesn't that put too much work on one of the rear motors? One of the remedies of yaw wash-out on under powered tiny whoops was to run them props out, which, if my understanding is correct, puts less work on the same rear motor. Love your content as always 👍

If the battery fall again next time search It before pickup the drone. Almost always It fall 10' around near the drone. Sometimes a little beat more.

There's that but other cinewhoops get the tumble too. Anyway, the Avata's the only beginner cinewhoop that sparked my interest so let's see if there will be some firmware update related to this

man, it would be super handy to have an aerial camera to search for lost items like that... oh wait...

How about slowing down the Yaw rate in settings?
@stephenmason56822 жыл бұрын
is it akin to a stall roll?

I can replicate this issue on demand. Fast yaw and roll together.... does it every time. A hard flat turn with yaw and roll, does this left or right. The oh shit button does work to save it though if your fast enough

You've answered yourself: Hard flat turn.

Happened to me recently. No wind. Not so sharp turn. Latest firmware. DJI didn't solve the issue and claim it was a «user error».

The batteries are very small… when mine popped out it took a while to find, like yours. I’ve only had one incident like, where I deliberate turned very tightly, and it does become unstable, but I didn’t end up crashing on that occasion… I’m only flying in manual mode too… Let's hope it keeps behaving…

Can you please put in a download link for the best quality video (50 fps ), so we can check the video quality. And if you have them, with ND filter.

are u flying with strong wind?

This is no acro drone, so just fly it careful and you are fine. Works for me. I recommend flying careful in manual and you will get used to it and know what moves you can do.

There are so many videos showing this exact problem from professionals, and yet the toxicity in this comment section is terrifying. Software glitches don't happen to everyone so you might never experience it while someone can get it in their first flight.This issue absolutely looks like one because it happened to so many, the exact same way: yaw, pitch down, nosedive with 0 control. I was gonna buy the Avata as a complimentary safer drone to my DJI FPV around people, buildings and cars, but I think I'll wait for a firmware update that solves this. Knowing DJI, they'll probably never admit to the issue, fix it in the next update and act like it never happened.

03:30 This is really bad. Not only because of potentially loosing the battery but also because the battery then might become a danger to animals feeding on the grass or the guy operating the lawnmower. Luckily you finally found it.

That doesn’t just happen in manual it actually happened to me using the motion controller I made a sharp turn like a real sharp turn and it came right out of the air. I was in sport mode by the way

some people said we should not do quick turns with this cinewhoop, well if we cant turn when flying at 9m/s (like Mads Tech did at 2:22), what's the purpose of this cinewhoop? is it still a cinewhoop we can expect? apparently its the drone issue ...

Hello mate, hey just a thought do you think the memory card slot cover could be opening slightly with the force from turning or prop wash , then temporary gaming or stopping that one motor. Because to be honest mine doesn't feel that securely locked in, the props are that close to the rim the cover would only have to pop out a little to gam the prop.
@Flamamacue2 жыл бұрын
I happened to have mine with me on my desk and had a look, this is definitely conceivable IMO. Because the clearance of the prop is so tight it would only need to move a mm or so to interfere with it enough to affect flight to that degree. No FPV expert but it's a logical possiblity

this is common issue for cinewhoop ducted drones. not especially for avata.

Not an inverted flip and nose dive.

I have the same problem first two weeks flying I thought mine is free of this problem but yesterday i chased a quad bike and I nearly crashed into water 2 times in tight turns really wierd feeling don't understand why it's doing it like the Motors stop for a second at high momentum so sad except of this it's the greatest drone in my opinion

Too much I term. Really, it exhibited the same downward nose thing when you turned right, it just happened to dip more on the left turn enough to crash. Considering it's a fairly symmetric machine, I'd chalk up the direction to more of a coincidence. The problem is that once it hit the ground, it freaked out. That seems like an I term issue. Just like when you bump a wall with a whoop and it sucks into it and goes crazy. Lowering I term helps a bit. Maybe they're not using the latest version of betaflight,. 😆 Sounds like they also need to put more priority on the kill command.

Today is 17.3. 2023 and I experienced the same issue. The drone got out of control in Manual mode and crashed in the tree in full speed. It was broken to pieces. Luckily it didn't hit a person - after thinking - this kind of drone shouldn't be on the market as it's endangering people's lives. Does anybody know if there are any European institutions (or any other) inspecting DJI Avata issue?
