Dustin, I’m curious, when you see a review of a sponsored product, do you “discount” the review because of a “perceived bias”? Would you REALLY want to be sponsored if it took away from your credibility/neutrality ? Or would you feel you had to be TOUGHER on them to remove that perceived bias?

Wow Dustin, You love testing these little guys well. That wind was fierce!!.. yet that little MA2 stayed solid. Great picture quality and behaved as you'd expect for a Drone of 2020. Precision landings always blow me away... maybe cos' I'm old and playing with RC Heli's, jets, Fixed wing aerobatic for 25+ years...and toy grade quads..in the last 5 odd years too... but this level blows me completely away. new Mavic Pro Platinum owner and it's mind blowing how easy this thing is to fly... so simple... Nice review.. as always Dustin, Hope you guys are keeping safe!

i think it does that if it is close enough to its home spot but if it was farther away i think it would return to home
@tonyowen116
@tonyowen116 3 жыл бұрын
Would suggest that all operators of the DJI Mavic Series quadcopters, read their Operators Manual, under the section - Low Battery RTH. I clearly states what will happen, when the Low Battery Warning comes on. The questionable return to home occurs when the pilot/operator keeps canceling the RTH function. There will be a point at which the battery level will no longer support continued flight, and the drone will land where it is. If it is too far away, it could be a splash down, or smacking into the local terrain. I've seen more than one such video on You Tube. Always puzzles me why people ignore the warnings? Losing a $1k drone seems.... well...... one does wondering what is going through the pilot's mind?
@duckgoesmooo
@duckgoesmooo 3 жыл бұрын
@@tonyowen116 Exactly. I fly much bigger things than drones, and if I get a warning, I damn well listen to it. If my drone gives me a warning, I damn well listen to that as well. Also you can apply some good piloting measures to flying so you don't get caught out, like knowing wind directions and speeds, and ideally flying out into wind, and returning home with it.

These drones are amazing. 30 Years ago i was in to rc helicopters and it was hard to fly them around and land while keeping everything in 1 piece. Even in low wind condition it took many many hours of training. Ofcourse the only electronic assistence we had back then was a mechanical gyro to keep the tail somewhat in the same direction. To have these drones fly so easy while its such a small package really shows the advancing of electronics.

"Dustin 'Extreme Test' Dunnill" ... ha ha. Really put it thru its paces. I was trying to remember then that song "Lime in the Coconut" 1st came out .. I think 1971, because I was very young when I 1st heard it. Laughed when you showed your skate park, because the idiots who run the state of California filled in their skate park with sand (so skater kids would stay socially distanced). Kids came back with shovels/brooms a week later and shoveled the sand out. Pretty surprising that it held its ground so well. Don't think I'll try that with my old XK 380 though. Mahalo!

Once again, awesome video Dustin! Been doing some range and accuracy testing also. Noticed you made the comment that people seem to think that if they let it hover, you have a better return to home accuracy. I've heard the same thing. This is what I have come up with personally. I live in an area with a lot of wifi interference and I have a cell tower .25 mile away. The biggest determining factor for me is contrast. If I have the landing pad out, I land within an inch to 3 inches everytime. I can hover above the pad or take right off and shoot straight in the air without waiting. As long as I hear "The home point has been updated" message before flying away right away, it is an extremely accurate return to home. I've done 10 hovering and 10 fly away right aways and all 20 were accurate. The biggest distance recorded is 3 inch. Now, if I take off from a grassy area(no contrast), I am still accurate, but now its by feet, not inches. My point is I don't think it is a matter of waiting over the landing spot or taking off right away. I believe its a matter of GPS for general area and contrast for that exact accuracy. My Air 2 will even face the same position it was in when I took off. Sorry for rambling, just trying to explain what I have found the best I can. :)

You can select option to reset home position. I’m pretty sure mine sets it when it gets enough satellites, while still on the ground - seemed odd when your drone set home position after takeoff. Had my maiden flights last night. Only one terrifying half minute or more. It would not respond (good signal, almost no wind, only 1000’ away, but was over a river). I think obstacle avoidance sensor was confused/overwhelmed by the sun being in front of the drone. Next, RTH either would not engage or I didn’t hold the button long enough. Eventually I got RTH to engage and flew 2x more w/o issues. Seems odd there is no HDR photo mode? No AEB in 48mp mode. No saturation or sharpness controls (that all cameras have nowadays). No gimbal speed/expo control

Dustin i left you a message in the comment section of one of your mavic air 2 vids. My point is in my experience flying the air 2 , no matter what distance, no matter how many turns and twist with manuel flight you almost always get a fairly accurate RTH. Usually, not always though when you use a smart function the RTH is usually off by 1-6 feet. I live in a city with alot of local wifi and have travelled more than a mile, and changing direction a few times. I press RTH and the bird lands on the mat every time. I use a smart function and only go 200-300 feet away and the RTH is inaccurate. Not horribly but compared to manuel flight it's not as spot on.

DJI told me that when you first launch, raise it a little, about 10 ft, then lower it and raise it again 10 ft pause for a bit, then take off to see much better results on precision landing. But this was also in very strong wind. But holy cow, you would never know it was windy by the vid feed, looks smooth! Incredible drone

Yesterday was my first day with my Air 2 on a high windy day and flying over a river for some shots. I was pretty nervous with our 15-16 mph gusts and it handled them like it was nothing. The gusts made my drone land like 4" behind where it took off, but that was the only thing that happened during the entire flight.

Obstacle avoidance dropping out when at full load could be due to unpredictable flight characteristics when at max power. If it is spending 90% of power driving forward, it couldn't guarantee straffing movement without being pushed backward.
@Stormrider-Flight
@Stormrider-Flight 3 жыл бұрын
it's because of the angle. When flying at high angels, the sensors cannot see the surroundings any more within required limits. For example when fighting too much headwind, the front sensors are too much lowered and pointing down instead af forward.
