DJI Mini 4 Pro and ND Filters. What you NEED to know!

If you have the DJI Mini 4 Pro you may be considering a pack of ND Filters. The usefulness of ND Filters are often discussed amongst us drone pilots and personally, I am a big fan of them.

There are 4 KZbinrs the travel the world and have great drone footage as parts of their overall videos. I've contacted all 4 and discovered none, none use or even have ND filters and I think the drone parts of their videos are stunning. I've decided "no" on ND's.

This helped me bigtime. It explains why my videos are slightly out of focus when I use the filters. As a game designer I obviously think motion blur is bad but I will admit that Vulcan can manage it at high FPS. Without aperture control I cannot control the depth of field.

I want to protect the lens of my Mini 4 Pro. Could I get away with keeping a low value, say ND16, filter on the drone at all times? With my Mini Pro 3 I had a UV filter, but as I can’t use it, or my other filters, on the MP4 I don’t want to have to splash out again on NDs and a UV.

Sure, you could do that. But yes, you could get a clear lens with no neutral density value simply to protect the sensor, but as you say you can't (sadly) use one that was intended for the Mini 3 Pro.

The mini 4 pro already has a protective lens over it. You can buy replacements for cheap if it gets scratched

Have never used ND's and been flying for years but I'm not a photographer either. After watching this video I'm not sure I ever want to order/use ND's because you must really want a shot to launch/land - launch land - launch/land in the process of changing out ND's just for a particular shot. So QUESTION - How about a CPL filter - would a CPL filter be useful when flying on bright days or other words EVERYDAY FLYING? This ND thing might be great for a particular shot but once you change directions it sounds useless. i would be wrong but it seems real trial and error for every single shot you want to take.

I agreed with your view long before I read them, Tim. Which is why I had a head to head with FREEWELL, when you had to buy their Mega pack of 16 ND Filters if you wanted a poloriser. Why on earth would you want 15 ND Filters just to get a Poloriser! This guy is also wrong in suggesting the Filters are only useful for the Photos and not for the video. And yes, you're quite right, when it comes to flying over water or shiny surfaces, a poloriser is just what you need. However, they still haven't included the Poloriser in any of their smaller Kits, as they did with the standard 4 filter kit for the DJI Mini 2. FREEWELL have now released some of their ND Filters, including their Poloriser, as individual purchases. But it's clearly a sales tactic not including it in one of the All day kits. Having said all, beware of cheaper options being advertised on eBay, as they are inferior in quality and made of plastic.

If I were to purchase ANY ND filters I would probably go with the FREEWELL because it is not worth "cheaping out" on filter with a thousand dollar drone so I guess I will just wait and see. I saw a video where a fellow was talking about having to put a filter on for a shot just to realize it wasn't the right filter and landed, put another filter on and it too was not the right filter and landed again SO he went with adjustable filters (can't remember name of them), but he did admit it's a lot of trouble. I'll continue to use nothing for now and maybe purchase a CPL filter and try it out. @@mikejduk

I'm thinking it's like having your sunglasses on before going out is always better then leaving without them. No matter which direction you face . Also better to be under exposed slightly if anything and less post production digital alteration the better.

Can you show us how histogram and serpia stripes (or whatever they are called) can assist with this process of nd filter selection and however else they may be useful . Thanks.
