Thanks for another excellent review! I will be upgrading to the Pocket 2 from Pocket 1 as the new focal length eliminates fumbling with extension sticks while cycling. I have found the Pocket’s gimbal stabilization works much better than the iPhone while cycling or hiking (and also in high dynamic range settings with the magnetic ND filters). The Pocket also takes smoother panning shots. That said, I agree with your conclusion that my post-COVID travel bag needs both, so before my next trip I will also be upgrading to the iPhone 12 Pro Max. I travel with only one carry-on sized bag and every piece of camera gear has to earn its place. After trying the new Pocket2/iPhone combo, I’ll have to decide whether the pick-up in image quality from my Sony 6500 with its compact but mediocre 16-50 kit lens justifies the incremental bulk or whether to drop it. I’m not sold on the ZV-1 as a smaller replacement for the 6500 or as a compliment to the Pocket2/iPhone combo.

@@prod.lyelye I completed multiple inn-to-inn hiking and cycling trips in Europe in 2022 (Cami de Ronda, Wainright’s Coast to Coast, cycling loop around Netherlands). Osmo Pocket 2 was amazing, delivering by far the best 4k video quality walking or on a bike, and some stills. Had a waterproof case to store it on rainy days. Sony 6500 with kit lens delivered by far the best landscape stills at a small size. Video sucks and struggles with high contrast environments. Wouldn’t go any bigger or I just wouldn’t take the camera with me at all. iPhone delivered the best people shots, selfies, random quick shots of interesting things and good enough movies with the advantage that it was always with me in my right hip pocket where the other cameras might not be. Spent lots of time practicing with each camera and comparing shots before the trip to refine which camera I would use in which setting. Took 6500 photos and videos overall. Captured memories of three bucket list trips that I will treasure forever. Would make the same choices again. Nothing on the market since then would bump any of three cameras from my rotation. Full frame cameras and lenses are just too big for this kind of trip.

As an owner of the iPhone 12 Pro, I have purchased the DJI OM4, which gives a three axis gimbal and all the features of Mimo app. And I prefer using the iPhone over the Pocket for photos because I can compose them much better on the bigger and brighter screen. And now that Apple lets you capture RAW images in the native camera app, but still retains all of Apple's almost magic like image processing features, it's hard to top that kind of computational photography. And I'm aware that I can connect the iPhone to the Pocket, and use the larger screen of the iPhone, but at point I'm not longer using a pocket sized device. Great review, you make many excellent points.

Hello, my friend. I recently purchased a Pocket 2. After testing, I found two major problems about its video image quality. 1st, the image quality is worse under 4K high frame rates settings (4k/48/50/60). I observed obvious loss of detail and pixelated object edges under high frame rates. 2nd, I observed lots of artifacts in fast moving scenes, especially at the edge of objects and in the sky. The artifacts are more serious at lower frame rate settings (when the bitrate is 80Mps). These problems do not exit in OSMO Pocket 1. Pocket 1 produces more consistent results. I reported the problems to DJI. Previously, they replied that Pocket 2 uses pixel binding to achieve high framerates which may cause the problem. Later, they changed tone and refused to admit there's any downgrade of image quality under high framerates other than some moiré. And they told me they had no plan to address this issue. So I wonder if you could do a scientific image quality test comparing 4K videos under lower frame rates (4K24/25/30) to high frame rates (4K/48/50/60). You are the only photography/videography reviewer I trust who is not a corporate sellout. I hope maybe you can verify my findings. Thanks a lot!
@TheHybridShooter3 жыл бұрын
Yes, 60p video looks worse than 25p. That is probably a side-effect of high-res sensor. Using D-Cinelike helps a lot because it uses less sharpening which means that there is less artifacts. I generally recommend using 60p only when necessary (on any camera).

Great video!! Thank you for doing this. I have a quick question for you. i hope you don't mind. I recently purchased a Sony A6600 mirrorless camera and am at looking at gimbals for it. However, this mean more money, more to carry, and I definitely want image tracking capabilities, so that is even more money. Anyway, my question is (I'm a newbie here, so bear with me here,) if i were to use the Pocket 2 for some moving and tracking footage, do you know if it would pair well with footage from the Sony A6600? The only lens i have currently is the Sigma 16mm F1.4. Which I do love :) Anyway, you don't need to give a detailed answer, just wondering if you have done this with whatever "full" camera you may use. Looks like you may use the A7III? And I guess my "quick" question turned out to be not so quick...sorry...haha. You didn't mention the audio functions of these devices, unless I missed it... the Pocket 2 is almost like a good audio recorder which also shoots video! I have no idea what the built in mics of the iPhone are like, but I would be surprised if they were better than the Pocket 2, overall. And if you buy the Creator pack version of the P2 then the options for audio are remarkable. In recent years it's become normal to have almost no location audio on KZbin videos, as it's been replaced with boring music. Perhaps this is because so many video cameras have poor audio. With the Pocket 2, DJI have shown that first class audio can be integrated into a tiny camera, and hopefully this will mean more location audio being used and less music, particularly on travel videos where immersive audio greatly enhances the experience of 'being there'.

I own the 1st gen Pocket. I'm all about portability and picked it up to dabble in video as my main camera is an X100V. However, I found the in-built display too small to compose shots in general usage. Attaching it to a smartphone was too cumbersome. Still, it's great for timelapses and pans (or the two combined) so I have a use for it.

I honestly do not see how several of the video reviewers are saying the DJI has more detail in the shot. I am looking straight at the video and there is no question the iPhone remarkably has much more detail despite being a bit saturated.
@TheHybridShooter3 жыл бұрын
There is a huge difference between detail and sharpness. What you see with iPhone is more sharpness, not more detail.
@mrmaramind3 жыл бұрын
@@TheHybridShooter I understand there is a difference as I just looked it up, but I prefer the shots of the iPhone when it comes to places, but I agree the DJI looks better on faces and the iPhone colors look over saturated at times to me on faces in bright shots. But, for everything else i just really like the images photo and video of the iPhone. The DJI just looks unpoppish (yes I just made that word up, LOL!) and not vibrant to me. The audio on the wireless mic on the DJI sounds surprisingly good, i don’t know anyway to get wireless mic on the iPhone. How do you compare the DJI Pocket to the Sony ZV1?
@TheHybridShooter3 жыл бұрын
@@mrmaramind If you prefer iPhone sharpening and colors, you can just use normal color profile on Pocket 2 or add sharpness in editing. ZV-1 is completely different device, so that is too complicated for a KZbin comment.

Pocket 2 or zv1
@wio21893 жыл бұрын
zv1 has too narrow field of view so you always need a selfie stick when vlogging. Also stabilization requires even further crop or fixing in post which takes time

If you film a lot the iPhone will overheat. The pocket 2 does not. I have extensively tested them as that’s what I use for my KZbin channel. iPhone is good for short videos here and there and that’s about it.
@TheHybridShooter3 жыл бұрын
iPhone 11 Pro and 12 Pro definitely won't overheat, I haven't used previous generations. Pocket 2 might get warm, but it is fine.

Disappointed you tested with Pro instead of Pro Max.

I am not. Oversized 12 Pro Max version spoils the convenience factor for me, so I am not willing to use it or buy it.

Iphone12 has much sharper video than Pocket2. Heck even pocket1 has sharper and better video than pocket2 as seen from your other comparison video. Also Iphone12 has much better low light performance as its sensor has much larger pixels. You try to put emphasis on larger sensor of Pocket2 but you need to understand that its larger sensor has much smaller pixels which gather much less light per pixel and so they are much less sensitive. Do your homework. Other than that your videos are excellent.
@TheHybridShooter3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, but you are definitely the one who needs to do the homework. iPhone video is sharper, but notice that I make a clear distinction between the sharpness and detail. Sharpness is just selective increase of contrast. If you want to want to match iPhone sharpness with Pocket 2, it is super easy just by increasing the sharpening. Pocket 2 captures much more real detail and I dislike overshapened video, so I don't use much sharpening in my videos. The low light is much better on Pocket 2. What matters is the total area, pixel size is MUCH less important, due to the effects of downsampling, or in this case pixel binning. What you wrote is a common misconception, but it is incorrect.

I really know well n good about it. (bcoz im an iphone user since 2014 -2022).
