First of all, I do not hate linus and do not just want to make him look bad or be another triggered DJI fanboy. And for the record, I own both the Phantom 4 and the Spark, so I know what I'm talking about. So, to the point, this is not a completely honest review. The Spark was never meant to be a "smaller mavoc pro" and thus the Spark cannot be compared to it in any way. When talking about the Spark's flight range I have to say DJI was not completely honest in their advertisements (maybe due to ideal circumstances / real life performance) but what linus is saying is completely false. DJI never claimed the Spark could fly 2km by connecting just your phone, as a matter of fact, they advertise a 100m far by 50m high maximum range for phone-control. Regardless, they DO advertise a 2km maximum range for the optional controller which, honestly, I have never been able to achieve in the real world (with live video connection). Moving on to picture quality. Firstly, DJI had never mentioned the Spark would be able to film in 4k, so any complaints about the 1080p video quality are out of place. Secondly, the lack of the RAW save mode and any picture lighting/color control is due to it's purpose. As linus said, this is a drone meant for amateurs/"regular" non-dronie people. Leaving out these options is not a shameful sin, especially when most of its users do not even know what it can be utilized for in the first place. This hence people that buy the Spark are most likely non-professional photographers who normally only take simple photo's with their mobile phones anyway. Last but not least: video stability. The Spark is meant to be a pocket-sized and convenient aireal camera used to take simple shots. This does not include complicated (especially for beginners) shots, hence the less advanced gimbal. And the part I don't like on linus' part is the fragment in which he calls the Spark "twitchy". The video shown was taken in sports mode, in other words, race or 'fun' mode. In the sports mode, the Spark will fly faster, tilt faster, spin faster and most of all have a higher sensitivity. Coming back to the gimbal, the high manouvrability in sports mode makes it so the gimbal cannot keep up with the Spark's movement, this because the gimbal is made to be able to counteract the movement of the Spark in 'normal' mode, which "normal" people will most likely use for filming. This because the Spark can be hard to controll for beginners in sports mode. Hopefully I didn't sound like a complete jerk, but I genuinly hope to have clarified several things about the Spark. In the end, throwing the Spark away as a shitty and "badly advertised" drone is a straight up lie.

I completely disagree. The spark is a great drone. It is in fact the Mavic's little brother. Kinda like the iPhone se is the little brother of the iPhone 6s. It does sacrifice some functionality, but for the price, it's a sell.

I have the Spark and can't imagine upgrading to a Mavic. Yes the Mavic does have more features, but the size of the Spark is a major advantage. I've had cops roll up in places where I definitely was not allowed to fly. I was expecting them to hand out a ticket or at least issue a warning. Instead they just pause and look at how small it is. Then continue on with their business. If it was even slightly bigger, I'm sure I'd run into issues. I'd rather wait for the Spark v2 before I upgrade to a Mavic.

I agree. Once you learn how to fly smoothly (or turn on tripod mode), the lack of a third axis on the gimbal really isn't a problem. I don't own a 4K display (most people don't) and have no plans to get one in the near future, so 1080p is perfectly fine. The only reason I'd upgrade is for increased flight time. If DJI can improve that with a better battery or a Spark v2, then there really won't be much of a reason for me to ever upgrade, other than the "Oooh, shiny!" factor. Also, and I really don't mean to sound like a jerk here, but you shouldn't be flying where it's not permitted. I know it sucks, I know it can seem unreasonable, but it's best to obey the law. Drones and drone pilots are coming to a crucial juncture in regard to public opinion, which can shape future rules and regulations governing our hobby. We need to put our best foot forward and show that we're good, honest, law-abiding people who enjoy flying around without all the risk of, you know, crashing and dying. The best chance we have of seeing regulations relaxed is to obey the ones we have in place now.

I think the biggest thing you're missing between the Mavic and the Spark is WHERE you can fly it. The Mavic while portable, still draws a crowd and those annoying who people think you are recording them (who you actually wish were not in your shot). The Mavic is still fairly loud and big when flying. The Spark however, looks like a toy. It draws way less of a crowd and people don't feel "violated" while you fly it. It also is way less likely that someone is going to come up to you and say, "You can't fly here". To me, that is where the Sparks worth comes in. I can be out and do video and people don't really seem to mind it.

I know this video is from over 18 months ago, but I just got my Spark last month and love it. It was a no-brainer for me - the Spark was about $600, the Mavic Air $1300, the Mavic Pro Platinum $1500, and Mavic 2 Pro $2500 (none of these is the Fly More Combo, just the drone and controller). Plus I was able to get the Spark from my phone carrier on 24 months interest free repayments, so I didn't even have to pay anything upfront. For someone who has never flown a drone before, the Spark is perfect. Excellent to learn on before splashing out more than twice the price for one of the Mavics. I can still get shots I wouldn't be able to without a drone, and I'm not as worried about crashing it as I would be with the Mavic Air (which is an upgrade I'm planning on making in a couple months). Plus, there's something you forgot to take into account in terms of the flight time - yes, one battery will only give about 12-14 minutes of flight time. But you can charge the battery in the spark using ANY portable battery bank, which no other drone that I know of is capable of. And there is now an accessory you can get from DJI which is a carry case which can also charge the drone and two extra batteries, with its built in power bank - again, something no Mavic has. Basically, the Spark is well worth a buy now for certain segments, even if it wasn't great on launch.

Hey Linus! One highlight about the Spark that I feel was missing in these comparisons with the Mavic is how the small size can be such a huge advantage when it's not in flight. I'd rather the Mavic any day if I could teleport it into my hand at will, but as an international traveler who wants to stay low-key and lightweight, the tiny nondescript carrying case and size of the Spark puts it into a whole other category for me. I can take it anywhere and it doesn't draw attention in a Marrakech marketplace or require another backpack. That alone is worth a 4k video tradeoff for me, on top of the significantly cheaper price.

I found the Spark Fly More bundle at a local electronics store as an open-box on automatic markdown. I guess nobody noticed it for a while or something because I snagged the thing for $220, full manufacturer warranty and all. For that price the Spark is insanely good lol. I'll also note, you can buy a factory refurbished Mavic for $699 from DJI's ebay store. That's how I got my Mavic first, and what you get is indistinguishable from a brand new unit. For $699 the Mavic is a no-brainer better deal.

Picked up my spark fly more combo a few days ago and love it so far. It's only 1080, but if uploading to KZbin or just sharing on phones/tablets, that's fine. A little editing in post goes a long way. I plan to step up to the Mavic later if I want to keep filming, but it's easier to justify $599 for the full kit over $1100+ for the Mavic combo.

The way you guys argued this is in the context of only having one drone, and in that case, I agree. I would go for a used phantom 3 however. For me and many people that I know, the spark is more or less a backup drone. The spark is the one that I throw in my bag before a hike, or when I am going somewhere where a drone even as small as a mavic wouldn't be acceptable. As to how they marketed it? I got my father, who is a hobby photographer, the basic set and he loves it. As a "flying selfie stick" I think it fills its role pretty well.

There are GLARING issues with your review: 1. There are HUGE reasons to get the Spark over the Mavic. First price. In the video you compare the Fly More Spark to Base Mavic. You need to compare the similar packages to one another. If you do this, the Spark is nearly half the cost of the Mavic! Second, the Spark when opened up is smaller, which means getting shots in more narrow spaces is more ideal. This is a huge plus for some photographers. Finally, and this is the biggest reason, the Spark is the first DJI drone released after the recent changes to FAA regulations; you don't need to register your drone anymore or follow earlier restrictions if you plan on using it for recreational purposes. 2. Your drone is clearly defected. In your videos, your drone simply cannot keep itself still, which is an issue NO OTHER KZbinR seems to have. Maybe its decal, maybe its something else, but if your drone is freaking out like that and you don't check if it is an issue with your model, that is a huge issue. 3. The hand motions seem to work well in everyone else's videos. In your video, you wave the drone to move back when right behind it is a tree! It doesn't have back sensors. What the heck did you expect to happen? That isn't the drone's fault, but your fault. I love your videos, but with such a garbage review, I feel less confident taking your opinion on such videos in the future. You definitely lost me as a huge fan of your videos.

I am actually surprised that you responded to this comment. am actually impressed, and thank you for taking the time to respond. 1. Not going to argue here, as I guess it depends on how you look at it. The flymore has other things other than the remote, and the total accessories for what you get are similiar. (Mavic's bundle has 1 more battery but it also costs 100 bucks more.) 2. By the folding argument I was referring to wingspan of the drone in flight. Looking back I did not word this properly. Apologies if this was not clear. 3. FAA regulations regarding drones are actually huge issues for many people who want to buy drones. For a very publicly known exmaple, look up Casey Neistat's issues with the FAA regarding his drone usage. The fact that the Spark doesn't run into these issues is a HUGE deal if you live in a city such as New York. 4. Onto the glitches/issues part. In the backing up scene, it is clear that you waved. Yet, the video was done in a way that made it seem like the drone did it on its own... Regarding the TechCrunch video, first look at the timestamp. At that point in time, only prototypes of the Spark were given out. Second, they were using the drone without the propeller guards. If you land/launch a drone where the props are literally and inch from your hand, what do you expect to happen? I have been watching nearly every review regarding the Spark, as I have been saving up for a good portable drone. I have looked at the prototype videos, to the reviews where people bought them and reviewed them. For an example of a review that shows just how good the gestures work on the Spark, look at Iphonedo's review. Last thing I want to say on the subject: if you are going to buy a 500 dollar drone, and you want to use the gesture controls but don't want to read up on what the signals mean (which are kinda needed if you want to know what the drone is doing), that reflects on the user, not the drone. "Waving to go back is meant to be a lot more obvious than my gesturing from side to side, which its actually meant to follow. If that actually triggered it, it shouldn't have." I assume you are referring to 3:27. The person there (is that you?) clearly shook his hand, which then makes sense as to why the drone thought it was a wave. 5. Regarding flight, you clearly just stated that the drone of moving around was fake. The FPV video shown occurs due to the drone having a 2 axis gimbal. This is advertised, and no one buying this is expecting to use this for professional shots while making sharp turns under sport mode. That whole segment makes the drone look much worse than it is. You also just admitted the clip here 3:42 was done fakely. How is anyone going to take this review seriously? Regarding wind speeds, the small youtuber Chris Rollins takes a LEAFBLOWER to his drone and compares the Spark to the Mavic. Both handle super high winds extremely well. THIS WHOLE SEGMENT IS JUST NOT TRUE. Name of the video is DJI Spark - High Wind Stability Test if anyone wants to see this. " The staged shots with both the P4P and Mavic? The turbulence caused by the two would have the Spark freak out, that's why." You did not even test this out yourself nor did you even do research to see if your claims are true. That is simply not okay.

My dad has this drone. He made $500 in about 30 mins by recording drone footage over a golf course xd. And taking pictures. He got the flymore for $600 so he's already got it payed off in one job which I still think he shouldn't have gotten paid so much for 30 fps 1080. But it's pretty insane. I'd just save up for the mavic pro but we're traveling a lot and it is an insanely small drone and with the controller can do outstanding things. My dad said the flying mode without the controllers using hand gestures is really really bad. So don't get it for that

The Spark is definitely a consumer product, just like the Mavic - they are real drones and not toys, but they aren't the best for professional grade aerial imaging. If you want that, you're looking at at least a Phantom, Inspire, or possibly even something based on a Matrice (if we're talking DJI). also, you need a whole whack of licenses to do paid work with drones. ;)

Many professionals would disagree with you about the mavic. Only because it's so portable that you can always have it with you. Not something you can do easily with a P4pro or an inspire. Having the really high end pro drone is nice, but do you no good if they are at home and you see a sweet shot you just have to get. I really can't say the same for the spark since the mavic is just as portable but has a better camera, battery and just flies better.

kiel hawkins I’m definitely not disputing the capabilities of the Mavic, but it sits solidly in the prosumer segment of the market. The P4Pro sits in the same segment. You cannot switch the gimbal over until you get to Inspire and Matrice, where you also get such niceties as a full-featured Lightbridge control and video link rather than the slightly stripped down lightweight controllers that come with the Mavic and Spark. Are they great for the job? Yes. Are they true “professional” equipment? No.

Hey linus!!!!! Get a couple combat wings to show these "drone" pilots what life was like 10 years ago before we had all the fancy quad-copters and self controlling features. If you can find it, get a foam flying wing (I can help with some personal modification that help save important parts from destruction during crashes), throw the gnarliest motor you can find on it, attach a 60+fps gopro and some lightweight, high range wifi type thing on it, and truly experience flight in VR

Love your videos man! Being a dji employee and tech and drone tech in general yeah I agree the spark is not a mavic, but what you have to remember for things like the gimbal the spark gimbal has many advantages over the mavic. You survived 3 crashes. The mavic would be lucky to survive one without needing to replace the gimbal. All that is a result of eliminating a yaw axis motor. Also mavic was first to use the gesture mode... so blame the mavic also for not finding that feature usable. But yes it's not the drone I'd pick up to film professional caliber video.

My school has the DJI Spark, I would say it is "good" to have here are the pros and cons I have Pros: Size, hand sensors, can hook your phone to it, has a nice camera and gimbal. Cons: If it crashes it is done for, it breaks really easily and firmware updates almost everyday. Takes quite a bit of time for the firmware to download. The components in it are easy and all, but just getting the top off causes a headache.

Being a Spark owner, I've gotta disagree with some of your points Linus but I also have to shake my head at DJI for marketing this as a cheap consumer selfie drone. Yes it has only a 2 axis gimble with the 3rd axis being modified digitally but it actually uses a 4k camera sensor , however since they didn't add a 3rd axis mechanically the drone has to shave the resolution from 4k to 1080p. It is a first gen design and i'm sure their engineers tried of thinking about a 3rd axis but it would have either made the price more expensive voiding out the cheaper consumer ability or possibly even lowering Mavic sales. As far as battery life , hey 14-15 minutes is still pretty amazing compared to most drones this size. I agree that the hand gestures & phone wifi ability are limiting, but with the remote it can fly very level and at a far distance. And if you want dependability make sure you use an OTG cable to allow constant data transfer with no buffering issues. Tracking modes are a nice addition as well as the comforting fact of it's size so as not to trigger peoples fear of large imposing drones. If you get the DJI Fresh Package youre also saving money on a second battery, charger, remote & carrying case. There are also firmware updates improving the software & hardware abilities. I think for the money you spend DJI did a great job.

The spark its better for mi that the mavick, but of course, the mavick it other level of drones, and those that say it cheaper and better the racing fvp drones, well we are talking about other kind of drones.

And by the way, the advertised 2km distance is only achievable with the controller. I'm not sure about how the video and such would transmit correctly at high distances, though.

I just want to put this out there: I recently bought a Phantom 3 Standard with an antenna upgrade. This cost me a total of 420 Euros, 280 euros less than the Spark (with controller) would have. It comes with better flight time, a better gimbal, equal still image and better video quality, equal range and an included controller. Downsides: It flies a little less stable since it's missing GLONASS connectivity and VPS and it doesn't have all of the intelligent modes. You can get the intelligent flight modes like active tracking through the Litchi app, though, which you can actiually download for free (although I was having trouble linking the app to the drone) and if you want GLONASS and VPS you could also go for the Phantom 3 SE that comes in at 600 bucks and also delivers 4k. The only "downside" will be that you won't have gesture control. I think that wouldn't be a big issue for most people, though.

I had a Mavic Pro in the past and I just bought a Spark Fly More Combo. Flight time is a big difference. Make sure u buy more batteries, 2d-3d gimble is not a deal breaker for me. The smoother(slower) you turn your drone, better the footage. I do not completely agree with Linus but I feel Spark is a pretty good drone and can give excellent shots. Especially for Linsey :P, Buying a Mavic Pro is an Overkill.

As an owner of the spark I have to disagree. The price jump from Spark with fly more to the magic is HUGE. Another 50% price increase. The added range isn't legal in Aus (you need to maintain line of sight) and 4K is still a joke when no one has a 4K display yet. The fly more has 2 batteries. So it's the same flight time as the mavic. And the lack of a third axis on the gimbal is nitpicking to an armature like myself. I really respect Linus and have used him almost solely for my decisions in purchasing tech in the past but he's just blatantly wrong about the Spark. (And literally any other review online supports that) Oh also, don't compare it to the mavic ... compare it to the competition in its class. It comes out on top in almost every way.

There's an app for android and iOS called "Can I fly There" and it's an official gov app, always check that before launching. Also you can't fly directly over an active sports field or beach. Roads are a bit of a gray area but if you're over like 55m altitude no one can see or hear the Spark anyway :P Oh, and Sydney CBD is a no fly, although you wouldn't want to anyway because the GPS drift would have the drone smashing into buildings. I got mine from eBay so was from China so don't have local warranty but you can purchase DJI Care Refresh from their site, it's $99 and allows you to make up to 2 claims ($79 first, $99 second) to get a new drone if you break yours during flight. I'd say that's 100% worth it since they're so expensive here.

Daniel R 4k isn't a useless feature because everyone is getting 4k displays. Pretty much any tv you buy today is 4k. The Mavic has in many respects more than twice the battery because you have to account for take off and landing times. If the spark has only 14 min of flight time and youre going to want 5 min to bring it home and land it so you only have 9 min of actual flight. With more like 25 min on the Mavic.

I agree with the missing axis, it shouldn't make much of a difference. The added range gives you the peace of mind that in your line of sight it is well within the range of the controller. 4k gives a sharper image/video regardless if you have a 1080p display. For the flight time, you have to factor in the 20% minimum battery required to fly back down.Even if you have 3 batteries, you can't change it in mid air like Airforce One to keep the spark flying. That said I still haven't bought either as they will put a hole in my pocket that I don't need yet.

I got the Spark because of cost availability, and I am enjoying it so far; however I do agree gesture mode isn't that effective, and the remote controller is a necessity. I do regret a bit that I didn't know the Mavic was not too far off in cost, but for the kit that comes with everything in the Mavic, it totals at around $1,200. So I'm a little torn because I enjoy the product, but getting the Mavic was more functionality for the cost; however the lower cost of the Spark was more actulizable at the time.

I got the fly more combo for 540€ while spark alone cost about 400€ . It is the best drone for beginners. I have personally managed to counter its drawbacks and the key is to learn how to capture cinematic footage. It is not easy but when you master it your shots will look like shots from a much expensive drone! Fly safe.

You never consider the fact that in some countries, like where I live (Romania) you have to register your drone (the ones that weigh over 500 grams) with the Aviation Authority and also get a flight plan when you fly it, not to mention you are not allowed to take off or land over populated areas...so I gave up my non legal Phantom 3 advanced for the Spark and am very happy with it...PS there is legislation in the making in EU that says you will be mandated to register every drone over 300 grams but you can fly it without a flight plan...so the Spark will still not be required to register...

Software improvements have made big improvements in how the Spark responds to things like Gesture control. It's a very fun drone to fly, and my daughter loves it too. At 6:26, your "tester" walked directly into the Spark. It has obstacle avoidance detection in the front and on the bottom, so it flew backwards away from him. His fault, not the Sparks.

I've bought a Spark instead of Mavic for two reasons. First, the Spark is as big as the Mavic when is folded, so is easier to carry around and you can fly it anywhere. Second, law issues. For professional usage in Italy you can fly a drone without a license if it's under 300gr. Spark is perfect because you can rec videos in 1080p and almost fully stabilized without breaking the laws. In Austria is worst: under 300gr too and at least 30 meters of height. There's no drone available with the specs of Spark and with a 4K camera and gimbal.
