theres a video of him saying he wants to be disassociated from kpop because of the connotation that its inauthentic. Fair enough. But what bts stans were irked about was that he mentioned bts while saying it. That was actually what the whole debacle on twt was about but ofc danny and david conveniently excluded that cos its easier to make fun of female fans as us just getting mad about nothing right? That inauthetenticity that kpop has to its name, its the same thing bts/armys have been trying to dispell for years. For him to mention bts along with his sentiment was insulting. All his twitter ramblings, whatever most people kinda just rolled their eyes at that. He does more talking than making actual good music. He should really focus on that instead.

Exactly because if they were to text a translator would probably have to be used. It's just a fact. It would be different if she said she texted him directly and when he texted back she couldn't read it because it didn't make sense because he has bad English or he responded with "his funny symbols" then that would have been racist. The joke was super lame though and all her jokes make everyone a bit awkward but I don't think the awkward feeling was from the racism.

Okay, so I can't just sit back as I watch this and not react. I totally agree with Danny!! He definitely won the whole debate! Well, honestly speaking, most Koreans are the same. They are racist. Especially with Southeast Asian. Like how they look down on Filipinos and think all Filipinos are poor (because of their skin color). Little did they know that Filipinos helped them a lot during the Korean war, a.k.a: The Forgotten War. That's the sad part there! Us Filipinos love EVERYTHING Korea (since God knows when!) but most Koreans look down on the Philippines and its people. They even tend to use the word "Filipino" as an insult for "dark-skinned" Koreans.🤦🏼‍♀️Hating and insulting people because of their skin color is wrong, and it doesn't matter which color does the hating. It's just wrong.🙅🏼‍♀️ Like they say, unless it happens to you (or your country), people won't react and be triggered about racism issue. People; no matter what their race is tend to be racist if they're narrow-minded.🤷🏼‍♀️ No race is superior or inferior to the other. We are all the same. No hate! Let's just all spread love and kindness!💞

@Vi-ok8of

Ok, so the joke is she's contacting her friends who did well at the Oscars while she's watching it at home. The problem is once she gets to Bong Joon Ho, she makes it seem like a hassle to congratulate him. When in reality we know she could just post something on twitter which will translate to him for her. Or she can use google, ect. But she's dilibrately bringing up the fact that the Parasite cast needed a translator and exaggerates the hassels of language barriers. When she says she also sent a nude. She could be trying to imply that it's not the language barrier's fault they wouldn't respond to her. But she stopped texting in the joke so the language barrier is not worth the effort to get her congratulations to them. BUT in the next joke, she puts forth effort and tries to pronounce director Taika Waititi's Mayori name. She says "it's a very hard name to say". But after practicing for a few seconds, she says "I guess it's not once you try." Now she put the joke on her. 👏🏼🙌🏽 Taika speaks English and was her guest that day for his movie Jojo Rabbit. She spoiled Parasite's plot but not Jojo Rabbit's and she made the language barrier Bong Joon Ho's fault but NOT Taika Waititi's. I doubt she realizes there was a difference in how she approached and thought of each director. But there are alot of comedians who can joke about really offensive things because they know how to keep everyone in on the joke. Unfortunately their was a kind of entitlement behind her jokes about Bong Joon Ho that wasn't felt in jokes about Taika Waititi.

Im asian, but i’ve also watched Ellen growing up. I understand her humor and she was not being racist. She has a self-depreciating humor and thats what she was doing in that clip. When taken out of context, it seem like she was racist. But, the whole joke starts from when she mentions brad pitt. She listed a few celebrities and talked about how she contacted them. But when it came to Bong joon ho, it seems she is not acquainted with him (despite knowing all these other famous celebrities whom she has just mentioned) and the only way for her to get to him was through his translator. Following that, she went on to say that she hasnt got a reply yet and blames it on the possibility that it was a long process to go back and forth from translator to Bong joon ho, trying to indirectly say that Bong joon ho is probably too busy with his current achievements and has too many people to respond to. And another way to put it, Ellen is trying to point out that with all of Bong Joon ho’s achievements, Ellen was just an insignificant talk show host that is hoping for an Oscar winning director to contact her. She was indirectly putting it out there that she hopes to hear from Bong joon ho or even have him on her show. And at the same time, making a joke through self-depreciation. The real joke that she was trying to convey was on herself, not Bong Joon ho and his lack of English fluency. The real racist here is Jon Miller. His comment was unnecessary and appalling. A man of minority being racist towards another group of minority. What a prick.

@galapin kayana This is a joke right? I don't think anyone here is saying English is more supreme but here's the thing if you're saying Ellen should learn Korean then why should Bong Joon Ho learn English. If it applies to one it applies to the other more so because the director was nominated for an American award - Oscar & then agreed to attend in America knowing the national language is English. I remember both Danny & David saying the thing that makes Koreans happiest is when a foreigner visits S. Korea & tries to learn & speak the language. I feel like ya'll take things too seriously and choose to be pissed off. If you don't know what Jay is like, and you're not a fan, don't just assume things

As someone who is learning about Korean culture and this is my second year of learning Korean, Korean humor is very different from american humor and they take certain things seriously although they might not know the context or what happened. Anything that is involves Korea the Korean people usually stand by their own and go against whoever or whatever is "attacking" them, that's why we end up with netizens. Also in Korea the people are really invested in the news and tend to believe it without a second thought.

A few weeks ago, I remember that the racial debate was about Koreans doing and saying questionable things about Black Culture, and the koreans were like: " that's not racist, just curiosity or unfortunate move or whatever... bla bla bla" now the table is turning and now they are feeling how much things can hurt when they are coming from other cultures that have no clue or have no interest to learn about yours, before they say and do things. So let's hope all koreans can learn from this terrible situation and they themselves change how they look, say, and treat other cultures. Because if you want other to respect and learn about your you must at least do the same for them.

Ellen's joke was pretty safe. Translator's exist in this world because there is a language different between two countries and communication needs to be made. During this process, its extremely awkward and takes forever to get a response since there are multiple parties involved. If anyone thinks that this is racist, they need to grow the hell up. In fact, blowing this way out of portion like the host on the right doesn't help anyone in any way.

@rainyseas0n I don't know what Ellen you been watching. You guys do understand that ELLEN is a comedian right? She had Awkwafina on the show and she treated her great but on twitter it was Asians saying they cant stand Awkwafina. Then people mention a time when she had Monsta X on her show and she looked like she didnt care to introduce them. Well she had been missing the show for weeks leading up to that show and decided to come in on that day to see them then she missed the next few shows after.
@quitnn
@quitnn 4 жыл бұрын
@rainyseas0n I'm sorry but I don't agree. Like when I see Ellen do this is when she will say something and then the translator tell the person in their language. Then Ellen follows up and says "exactly" or "what she/he said". Those are bullying or offensive at all and people who find that offensive will have a real hard time in the real world. If you look at a lot of Ellen's interviews where she doesn't know the person she has this look. I think its because she's trying to focus on what they are saying not that she isn't interested. The only time I think Ellen goes too far is when she ask the Kpop artist about dating. To be fair she does that with American artist but imo the way Mark replied to her was more offensive then her asking. She obviously doesn't know that having a gf is frowned upon in KPop so she ask these questions because the girls are literally sleeping outside to get into the studio to see these guys. Also I think thats more of a Kpop issue than a Ellen issue. These kpop idols are depressed and sad to the point of suicide and you guys are calling her racist but the fans literally get their Idols fired or dismissed for anything.
@quitnn
@quitnn 4 жыл бұрын
@rainyseas0n Let me set something straight for you. I didn't assume you was a kpop fan at all lol. I don't know why you think I did but I didnt. I only brought up kpop because the majority of her Asian guest were kpop bands. I also mentioned Awkwafina because she is asian. Do you have the video of her doing this to the 12 year old translator because I havent seen this one. I would agree that she should know better if thats the case.

The point of Ellen's joke is that it's a visual message (a picture of herself) that she never got a reply on. So the joke is about herself. The lead up with the translator is a mix of misdirection and comedic timing in storytelling. It makes the audience wonder 'where is she going with this?' to set up the punchline of a) what the message was and b) that she's (pretending to be) dense enough to not understand why she wouldn't get a response, so something must've got lost in translation. The joke is on herself. But those other two clip/quotes, like yikes, hella racist.

That girl wasn't a victim, she was foolish and learned a lesson. It's part of life...maybe I'm old school, but when I was younger we didn't share our experiences with the world, just our besties. The guy didn't hide that he was an F boy. Hopefully he will learn his own lessons and stop living like that. Hopefully she won't make the same mistake again either. The racist thing is just stupidity but lame is Helen's thing. I thought she was saying he dissed her nudes by not responding. Who knows. Hollywood is pretty racist though as well as a bunch of other garbage...I never expect much.

I don't think you guys are aware of why BTS Army were so angry at Jay. It was regarding an interview clip where Jay said American Hip-Hop fans sleep on his music because they expect his music to sound like K-Pop/BTS just because he is Korean and that’s what people attach Koreans to. Then, BTS fans got mad because they thought Jay meant BTS music is boring and people will fall asleep to it. I don’t think a lot of these Army's knew what it means when somebody says something is ‘slept on’. It means that people don’t really pay attention to something or pass over it. Which is true regarding Jay’s case because in general, Hip-Hop fans do not enjoy K-Pop. So most of them don’t give Jay’s music a chance. So in conclusion, BTS fans were triggered at Jay for no fucking reason. Here is a link to the Tweet that went viral and got ARMY's triggered: twitter.com/PeterPARKSUN/status/1224027743186063360?s=20

Keep in mind, American hip hop is in English and now the wave has been more towards trap, so if you don't rap in English or use a trap beat its going to be really hard to capture "basic" /"casual" fans as they listen to radio or things that gets viral. You'll always have die hard fans no matter what, you just gotta cater to those. Rap is rap no matter what language it is but not everyone feels that way.

Jay definitely paved the way for K HipHop and is definitely a pioneer to a lot of people's styles and the fact that there's even more Korean American rappers goes to show his impact, without him we wouldnt have AOMG, which includes PH-1 and Ted Park and let's not forget 119 Remix 🔥🔥🔥🔥

I don't believe Ellens joke was racist at all. She was cracking a joke about how things could possibly get lost in a conversation when using a translator. The guy in the black hoodie is kinda hypocritical. He complained because the TMZ reporter should've used a translator....Ellen jokes about the use of the translator......so, according to the guy in the black hoodie, an English speaker is screwed for either using a translator or not. What a great guy!

His name is David, not "guy in the black hoodie" You must be new here. Did you come to this channel just to argue about this? And David is actually likeable, if anything, the guy you should be making a sarcastic comment about should be Danny, he's closeminded and pessisimistic. I don't know why you think those 2 actions contradict each other because they don't. TMZ, despite being a shitty media outlet, seriously complained about not being able to understand the cast as if they're supposed to speak English which makes 0 sense. A translator was necessary. Ellen was mocking the usage of a translator..MOCKING. Why would that be any different from what TMZ did, they both disregarded the usage of translators and David got upset with BOTH, so you guys have terrible comprehension skills. And this isn't the first problematic thing she's done so it's not too surprising.

I get what you’re saying, but I also don’t agree with it. Saying that English is just “another language”, I disagree because English is universal. Almost everywhere in the world people speak English. There are different ways to speak English depending on where you live. How ever when it comes to Korean, Arabic , etc. I can’t really say the same. I’m not even trying to degrade other languages.

I think is just really unfair of some people ( including Ellen) who "jokingly" mock Koreans for not being able to speak english. Like yeah why is it necessary for him being able to speak english but not for her to speak korean. I haven't seen Koreans making fun of Ryan Reynolds for not being able to speak korean in Korea :)

Koreans were usually so welcoming and even taught him a little bit of korean. They even praised him when he said basic things in korean. It’s really scary to speak another language that you aren’t comfortable with to people who’ve been speaking it their whole life. This type of behavior is courteous and the right way to go about greeting foreign artists. I wish the US would catch a hint.

@Jay1630 I've been keeping up with Ellen for several years now so yes i do now her way of joking, but if people constantly joke about this language issue, even if it's just meant as a 'joke', it still is hurtful and she's normalising saying stuff like that. I dont think Ellen specifically meant any harm and I dont think this is a reason to hate on her. I just wanted to make clear that even if one korean person feels attacked by this, we can't just play it down by saying it's just a joke.

@Jay1630 yeah i get that and as i said i dont see it as a big issue what she did, it's just as you said. The guy before mocking them in a more obvious way had kinda the same plot that she had, but her 'joke' was put out a little less direct. Not every Comedian built his career up on jokes that offend a specific nationality, but yeah dark humour is a thing but it should not be the reason why racism establishes it self without us even realising it and labelling it as " it's just a joke ". But as I said I don't see a reason in hating on Ellen.

nah I love Jay Park haha Yes there are rising kpop groups making legendary history, but BIGBANG is the original and you have to give credit to the original kings. To put it into perspective, America had to have the original music royalty like Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, and Queen for the modern-day highly recognized artists you hear on Spotify and the radio to arise.

And we all know that even thought TMZ is very popular they are one of the shittiest media news out there since forever honestly like the time they announced the death of cobe bryant before even his family knew. 3rd news: this is not the first time ellen made this joke, it is a shitty joke but not racist.
