Yes, dreams are so creative and intuitive. I used to get up 4 times a night and write down my dreams. Books and books of them. Then I had a dream where a voice said "Deb, you don't have to write every dream down. You'll get one or two important ones a week and you will remember them." I was hooked by that time and continued writing them down. These days, my life literally depends on remembering and analyzing about 4-5 dreams a night. Most tell me what is coming up and ways to deal with it. Warnings and possibilities... I hope one day my life doesn't depend on understanding them. It would be great to enjoy them more. I also would love to be able to project them onto a screen to really get the detail and keep them in a file to refer back to. Dreams are amazing. Sorry about your duck.

A few decades ago a very good friend at the time who kept nightly accounts of his own dreams would periodically send me hundreds of these to read through and interpret for him. So I would sit down with about thirty or forty A4 pages of these notes and slowly read through them sort of free associating as you suggest. Then I would set them aside for a few days and repeat the process. And then usually I would do precisely the same thing a third time over by which point ideas would generally begin coming to mind and then I would add notes to the dreams as and where I could. Finally I would post my analysis back to him and see what he thought. As time went on, I began to realise two things about this. First, I would invariably find sequences within his dream accounts (which were always comprehensive records written down across about a month or a bit longer) where maybe pairs but quite often 3 consecutive dreams would share the same basic message although presented in wildly different ways. The second more general thing I discovered was that dream interpretation was quite like reading poems. This was made more apparent because my friend is also a poet and so when he wasn't sending dreams to read, he was quite often sending his latest poems for my attention instead. And alternating between the two probably emphasised the similarities. Principally, that symbols both in dreams and poems are not only often very personal, but as you say, but they generally seemed to carry multiple meanings too. And finally, that's my suggestion to anyone trying to interpret dreams. Read them a few times over just to let them sink as poems also might, then relax into them and just see what comes up as you review them. Don't be surprised if you find repeating themes appearing in fresh ways - just as they often do in poems also.

Great video Daniel xxx In my experience dream therapy has been very helpful with my healing process, and sometimes I also have very powerfully moving spiritual experiences(in my sleep) which lets me know I am steadfast on the path I am supposed to be on. I'd like to share one of these experiences. While sleeping one night I became aware that I had awoken in a strange room with my face against the wall in a single bed,( I was married at the time), I knew this wasn't a dream I was having but I can't describe what it was, so I'm in this bed and I look towards the door of this room and I see my father standing at the door but I somehow knew he could not enter the room, he couldnt cross back over?? I was overcome with emotion and it felt like he had never left, (he had been dead for 18 years at this point) I also felt like I was a young child again very excited to see her father, then I was standing in front of him and he handed me a yellow rose with 1 hand and a 2 penny piece with the other, the most important aspect was the look on his face as if to say brace yourself for more trauma. The yellow rose I know now was about my spiritual development which is a huge and important part of my life, but I still don't know what the penny was for, but a few months after this my abusive marriage ended (back to a single bed)and days after I moved into a new home after the split I was seriously sexually assaulted which was horrific even the experience with the police was traumatic. But I've came a long way since then I'm now living a creative happy life and deliberately single for now.

You must be one really great therapist, I agree with everything I hear from you in this video, matter of a fact, that is the method I have been using on myself since I can remember, if nothing else to prevent me from going out of my mind, at times; I found it to be extremely effective, at least that is how it works for me and it makes sense. I also agree on the interpretation of the dreams, you're absolutely correct about that, I too have a few books about dreams, but these never made sense to me. By the way, these pictures of you as a kid with those ducks following you around are simply adorable! The experience you've had with that duck was traumatic; I had a similar experience with a bird that I saved and a wild cat swiftly took it away from me right in front of my eyes before I could even realize...the funny part is that I even love cats and I painfully understood that that bird represented his meal that day, so I had to forgive it. Great work. Thank you!

This is the area where Freud really shined. He was way ahead of his time when it came to dreams and their importance to understanding our psyche. Maybe his interpretations are off on some things, but his understanding of how important they are for self understanding was incredible. I also agree with your view on the simplistic view on dream journals where "if you dream X, it means Y." The barnum effect is acceptable for many who are unwilling to dive deeper into their minds

I stand there, in fascination, watching the wall of water suddenly looming taller and closer. Finally, the entire sky is blotted out as the tower of water is so close to me, and I crane my neck upwards, and I scream in terror as the wall comes down on me. -- I woke up screaming in real life. Can I ask, is the real reason you gave up therapy is because you realise you needed to go do a further psychology or psychiatry qualification? Because I know many counsellors, chiros, masseurs, osteos who become disenchanted with their training and discipline after 5-8years. So the truth is, you should be a proper clinical psychologist or psychiatrist. And instead of denying your talent, embrace that you eclipsed the role. Be proud and push hard. TLDR Notes I took: - Freud, "Dreams are to royal road to our unconcious". - symbols in dreams are individualized in the context of each person's experience. - free assosiaction, analyze with open mind, think in many directions, hypothesize - we are the best person to analyze our own dreams, not an external entity - it's not an exact science, but can point to a direction. - if you normally dont remember dreams and there is one recurring or important dream that you remember, it is important, as it breaks through the barrier of the unconcious mind. - people who don't remember dreams were often not valued as kids, they learnt that their thoughts, their dreams were not worthy to be listened to. they learnt to push away their thoughts.

In my twenties, I kept a dream journal for a year. I could never make any sense of those dreams, apart from some overtly sexual word games and connotations. I looked at the journal every 2 years or so and could still not make sense and tossed the notes. Then, for years, I had exhausting dreams of endless, pointless work chores. Worked on that with my doctor, and they have stopped. As of recently, I have had some dreams that I can make some sense of at least superficially. Now when I listen to you, my intuition says there is a deeper level worth looking into.

My most difficult and scary dream in adolescence was being chased by a black cat. What it meant is that I was afraid of my feminine side. It was so intense that I always decided to jump off a cliff rather than face the cat. When I read about it in the book I got the courage to finally look at the cat in my dream. I don’t think that it has anything to do with my boyfriend I think it means that my work place is toxic and that I need to quit. I would also like to get involved in the church which was ironically what the last dream was about me in a white van receiving a yellow God wrist band from either the pastor or his wife (someone in the church but I’m not sure who) the wrist band had some godly saying on it but I don’t remember what it said. These dreams were happening frequently. Today I went to work, was harassed, stood there for 4 minutes then said, “I don’t want to be here anymore” and left. It was freeing but then realized I have no clue how I’m gonna pay rent. I also broke it off with my father today which was also very painful. 😢

What does it mean when you have a death experience, get resuscitated by the life flight (twice) and they bring you back to a world where every 5 to 6 years you dream something both terrible and that comes true? Or are you going to be like the doctor (M.D) who blew me off completely, didn't believe it at all? Since they put me on the sleep machine I hardly ever dream but I had one of those dreams while I was on the machine. Far from making it "go away," it clarified the details even more. The fact that they "raised" my oxygen level made the next strange dream I had even worse. Because I "saw" even MORE that I never wanted to know.
