DmC: Devil May Cry had good ideas and I do think the gameplay is overall solid and at least better mechanically than DMC1 and DMC2. But it feels like they were making this reboot for all the wrong reasons, being that instead of trying to inject new life into a stale series, this instead feels like a desperate attempt to “Westernize” the series in order to give it more mass appeal due to its declining sales. Which of course blew up in their face, since it alienated their core fanbase, AKA a large chunk of the peeps who’d buy this game in the first place. And so despite tease of a sequel with the Vergil’s Awakening DLC, a follow-up to Donte’s game never came. And instead we eventually got DMC5, which entirely acts like the reboot never existed and is almost like an apology for it. So as much as a misguided dumpster fire as this game might’ve been, at the very least it didn’t lead to the series crashing and burning. Which unfortunately happens to too many franchises nowadays (re: any of Konami’s franchises.)
@ericquiabazza26082 жыл бұрын
DMC 5 didnt apologize for DmC, it embrace it, because staff like it. There is a lot of takes in DMC 5 taken directly from DmC, specially Virgil moveset. And as said, DmC tries to be its own take at DMC with western ideas, which fits namco msrketing strategies,so i think that it has potential but has to refine more its ideas and separates itself more from the main line, so its has their own line.

The DMC series' sales weren't really declining. DMC4's sales were actually the highest in the series at the time, but Capcom was probably comparing the numbers to other action game franchises like Call of Duty and Gears of War, so it was considered a disappointment.

@@ericquiabazza2608 I don't know who the first person that claimed that DMC4 Vergil got most of his moveset from DmC is, but it's both wrong and annoying. Everything else is either from DMC1, DMC3 or original (and of course, all this applies to DMC5 Vergil too since he's almost the same as DMC4 Vergil). So while DMC5 does take some very few inspirations from DmC (announcer, the void etc.) Vergil isn't, and has never been, one of them.

Personally, I find DMC2's Edgy Dante to be okay in theory The problem with DMC2 was that Dante didn't have anything interesting to bounce off of - unlike in DMCs 1 and 3-5 where the bosses (and Nero) all contrast or play off of his cockiness, DMC2 just doesn't have any good characters to interact with him - all the bosses are bland, Lucia is just...there...the best moment in the entire game is easily Argo going over-the-top "I was going to be a king!" where Dante just shoots him all "yeah? Here's your crown" Besides, this unintentionally sets a character arc with the other games - where Dante starts off a happy jackass, gets a bit somber after maybe losing Vergil, then depressed after more definitely losing Vergil, before cheering up once he has Nero and then gets all anxious when Vergil comes back DmC Donte on the other hand just has a terrible flavor of cockiness to him - he sounds more like a school bully trying to hurt people rather than have fun, on top of just reusing old swears (the infamous "f*ck you" scene comes to mind) instead of doing something creative and different (treating Cerberus like a pet dog, telling Agni and Rudra to stop talking, flirting with Nevan, getting Griffin to "flock off", complimenting Nelo Angelo on being honorable for not backstabbing him) Yeah, Donte just sounds more like a school bully who just got hurt and is trying to hurt people, and this actually makes me empathize with the bosses more than Donte Not helping is how the bosses are all either "dodge and kite until you can hit their weak spot" or copies of OG Vergil, but slower and now moans with every strike before making a rapist face at you

I may have gotten the name of DMC2's main antagonist mixed up with Argosax, but then that's the fault of the game's writing and not me Because I'm the type of person to remember Jan Dodona, Dipa Bilapa, and Vodo Siosk-Baas from Star Wars, and the fact that I can name these 3 minor characters from a massive universe over the literal main antagonist of a DMC game just goes to show how poorly this guy was utilized

DMC2 Dante becomes much better if you remember he spends the whole game making important choices, like helping save the people to progress with the game, with the flip of a coin... I genuinely do believe the rumor that a lot of the changes Ninja Theory made to DmC were mandated by Capcom themselves. A lot of their games at the time were being forced through the "Western remake treatment" around this time. Another KZbinr called Matt McMuscles covered the development of some of these games, including this one, on his own channel as part of his ongoing "What Happened?" series. As for this game, I hated the character designs, character writing, and story in general, but I liked the level designs and some of the aspects of the gameplay. Overall, I did like the game, but I completely understood the hatred it got and so didn't defend it. It's the same reason why I don't really defend Saint's Row 4 unless the specific part that's being criticized is the gameplay.

The one thing I'll say in defense of DMC 2's Dante is he was griving over the lose of his brother Vergil (who we thought died in DMC 1), Trish leaving him & Lady nowhere to be seen. It was likely to much for Dante at once so he became cold & distance, but over the course of the game he did start to regain some of the old spark he had (keyword some). The problem of course is we wouldn't learn about his relationship with Vergil (he was just a boss in DMC 1) or even that Lady existed (his potential love interest) until DMC 3 so we had no context for this sudden change of attitude, which in my opinion hurts the game a lot. If the game was released after DMC3 (which would of been DMC2 & DMC2 becoming 3 instead) we'd have more understanding of why Dante is like this from the start.

Great video, loved it, I just thought I'd add onto to your brief mention of Vergil, since while the hat is most definitely...a choice, the way they went about "modernising" him is far worse. Firstly, making him the leader of an underground anonymous freedom fighter group is interesting, however we barely see him working as the leader. We see him talk big, but he barely does anything, to the point that I was surprised that Kat was the one getting kidnapped when she could teleport away...and Vergil could not. Secondly, we barely understand why he changes from "we have to save the humans from the evil Mundas" to "I want to rule over these weak humans with an iron fist". Like, he appears to be doing this due to what happened to his Mother, though that doesn't work all that well considering she was an angel and not a regular human. (seriously what purpose did the Nephilim thing serve other than showing that no one at Ninja Theory did any research) But then, right at the end, he suddenly starts acting slightly closer to how DMC3 Vergil was. Like, the fuck? And thirdly, cause I feel like this part isn't discussed as much...the bullet abortion. Right before the third act, without any proper reasoning and as the hostage exchange of Lilith for Kat is transpiring, Vergil aims at Lilith's back and shoots; blowing out her stomach and killing her demon fetus in the process. Then he shoots her in the head. This is why Mundas then goes ape shit and probably ends up killing a lot of people. Heck, he and Kat almost die trying to escape because of this reckless stunt. Pissing Mundas off literally ends up making things harder for them in the end! Soooo, yeah, Donte might be a shit attempt at rebooting a character, but Vergil just feels like both an insult to OG Vergil, a pale imitation of him, and a poorly written arsehole of a character.

Now that we've got some time between when this game came out and today, I'll say that the game has some good points. Setpiece presentation is top notch, and the gameplay mechanics are legitimately good (to the point that Itsuno, who took up the DMC franchise as its director since DMC2, lifted some of that for DMC5's gameplay). The Director's Cut of the game also threw in a number of QoL improvements that made the game a lot more enjoyable (and the PC version afforded some very entertaining mods). But the rest of this game? Dogshit. Dated political themes, themes that were outright stolen from They Live, the edginess that made this game even more juvenile than the main series' humor, and a whole host of character and plot contrivances and "what were they thinking?!" moments brought this game low. The Vergil DLC for this game didn't help matters. Even if DmC's gameplay was more complex, it's no wonder why DMC fans flocked to Revengeance and shat on this game. And the fact that games journalists continued to defend this game with the most asinine justifications and arguments certainly didn't help its image. Not in a million years... would I regard this game in any light as positive as the rest of DMC.

The original Dante is 1000% a theater kid and I loved that about him. He was also cool in a cheesy cowboy sorta way. So the fact that Ninja called him edgy and then proceeded to make the edgiest characters ever really bummed me out.

I was still in high school when this game was first announced, and I vividly remember the hate people had towards it due to Dante's new appearance, the most notable complaint was his hair, which I thought was kind of childish. Bear in mind that this was before most of us found out that DmC was a reboot instead of a sequel, especially since some of the trailers online had the title of the video as "Devil May Cry 5" instead of "DmC Devil May Cry", so the I found the hate towards Dante's new appearance to be puzzling at the time. At the time when I thought this was the actual DMC5, the first trailer gave an indication that the Dante we would be playing as is not the real Dante, but an imposter, which is why he says "My name is Dante" in a voice we don't recognize as the real Dante's. Since that original trailer gave hints that "Dante" was undergoing some kind of psychological conditioning, my theory at the time was that Capcom was going for the initial concept of DMC4 where Nero was supposed to be a failed clone of Vergil rather than his biological son, but doing it for "Dante" instead, and the reason was that the demons decided to fight fire with fire and create a version of Dante that fought for them instead of against them, maybe even sending him out to kill the real Dante, and the reason he had black hair instead of white hair was because his demonic powers weren't fully grown yet but would turn white when they do as even in that first trailer you can see patches of white hair on him. I think if both Ninja Theory and Capcom ran with this concept as a spin-off storyline to the original series rather than the overall reboot we did get, it could've been both a great game and a great story, the story of a man created to be a dark replacement for a great hero. For the record, I actually like DmC for what it's worth, and it does do a few things better than the main series (Particularly the level design), but I don't blame people for hating this.

the best thing by far about DmC is how much from this game made it into DMCV,the overall movement making platforming M U C H more smooth,overall animations (like simply moving and swinging blades around) also felt much more smooth making the flow of gameplay feel just right,the way effects look and are delivered mid gameplay/cutscenes with the more "realistic" style of graphics when put with everything i mentioned prior just fitted everything NICELY into a single pack its one of those rare cases where CAPCOM looked back at a old game and did what most companies and critics themseves tend to forget to do nowadays:_find in a overall BAD GAME what WORKS theres potential EVERYWHERE specially in old trash games and DmC is the perfect example of that,again,can't even IMAGINE how DMCV would have looked OR played without DmC

A lot of the early concept arts involved a white haired dante with the signature red coat. from what it seems, ninja theory tried to make this dante a lot closer to the original until capcom told them to stay away from the original franchise as far as they can. even some cut dialogues from the game had the charm of the original dante to some sorts.

To this day I can't bring myself to give Ninja Theory's games a chance. The whole DmC PR debacle was so _severely_ mishandled that I've come to develop a personal dislike for everything that company is involved with. Their reps at the time (Tameem Antoniades in particular) were such unbelievable pricks, they directly damaged their own reputation. Which is to say nothing about how painfully unlikeable and bland the game itself turned out to be. That Succubus cutscene is burned into my mind as the most irritatingly juvenile bit I've ever seen in a game.
@Bluargh022 жыл бұрын
the sad thing is that ninja theory was well known for great story telling. that makes this game so much worse, because the writing is so bad. in the trailer there were some promising shots, like dante being hold in a cell with chains and the glitchy blend over to the fighting, which could have meant they had some psychology plots planned like Jacobs ladder just with swords and guns.

I’ve come to notice that Vergil tends to be voice by former Power Ranger actors. In DMC 3 and 5, Vergil is voiced by Daniel Southworth who played Eric Meyers aka the Quantum Ranger from Time Force. The DMC reboot Vergil is voiced by David De Lautour who played RJ aka the Purple Wolf Ranger from Jungle Fury. Also something semi unrelated, Jill in Resident Evil 5 is voiced by Patricia Ja Lee who played both the Pink Turbo Ranger and Pink Space Ranger. And seeing Johnny Yong Bosch, a former Power Ranger actor, has voiced a lot of Capcom characters including Nero, I think that Capcom tends to use former Power Ranger actors as voice actors.

I remember when I got to the cutscene where Verngal explained the situation to Dino. The moment he said they were nephelim I nearly choked my drink. The writers couldn't even be asked for a quick Google search on what a Nephelim even was. And doing that they took away one of the vital points in Dante and Virgils character, that they part human. Hell last time I saw a half angel half demon was on Wattpad. And there's the whole narrative of Mundus was the most powerful demon so he is automatically the King which does the original a huge disservice. Old Mindus wasn't the strongest hell he was far from it. He rose to power through manipulation and making friends with the right people and undermining any problems that could rise up. Now thats a good villain. Not big power slimeball in the reboot.

In other words, I also consider Kat as the lesser Trish, Lady, and to a lesser extent, Patty & Lucia. The idea of modernizing runic circles through spray paint struck me as really inspired when I first played it, and going into the game without knowledge of the behind-the-scenes shittery had me seeing things like Dante's "Not in a million years" comment strike me as more playful foreshadowing of him changing and growing rather than an insult to the fans.

One minute Mario's Leo Getz and Marv of the Wet Bandits, the next he's Tommy DeVito from Goodfellas, or Nicky Santoro from Casino. There's still bound to be plenty of goofy moments of course. I enjoy the gameplay except for the *insert weapon class here* to kill enemies, but the game itself for me always ran fine. Some of the designs are good(even though the creators did insult the OG designs) and the story is a mix bag. I enjoy certain characters like Phineas and the different take on the story of Dante and Virgil. However the game falls flat on the reasoning for all of this. In the original Devil May Cry, Mundus kill only Vergil(until we find out Dante kinda killed Vergil in 3) and now for some reason it was his mother now. Dante however didn't know about this until a flashback after he gain his angel powers(which still mixed on if they are either Half Demon/Half Angel or Demon/Human) with the Scythe. Also the excessive use of F*ck you was annoying.

Ironically, Dante's redesign is one of the only things I found good about the game, especially when he regains his white hair. My problems are 1. Ninja Theory's being dull try hard Edgelords, calling Dante a "gay cowboy" and sending back death threats to old fans. 2. Vergil in general, I honestly believe a pineapple would have made a better plot twist villain. 3. Vergils downfall, although it gave us an original story, it was boring and didn't improve on Vergil as a character, which I honestly prefer how the normal SE does it. 4. There where better games that did edgy right, being No More Heroes, MadWorld, Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising. 5. Kate was somehow more useless than Kyrie during DMC4, and that's saying something! 6. All enemies moved more predictable than the other instalments, with the exception of Dream Runner. 7. The story doesn't know when to be serious or when to be funny. 8. The soundtrack was butchered compared to the album versions. 9. Out of everything they changed why couldn't Vergil be on our side? Why did he need to become demon king, seriously back to the pineapple. 10. Angel and Devil Mode were useless style replacements. 11. All bosses sucked besides Bob.

It would have been a better twist if Dante was the one that turned evil at the end. Have Dante beat mundas, but the journey along the way has taken its tool. tired of the world being against him for no real good reason and seeing how shitty it is. Have Virgil be the good guy and try to slap some sense into Dante but fails, the he runs off to become the Demon King and Virgil basically has to start over. I find it funny how I never knew DMC 4 was even a thing. I always thought Nero was a new character in 5. Yes, even though it was called 5, I didn't know 4 existed until WELL AFTER 5 came out. I thought 5 was like them kinda acknowledging the reboots existence, but not giving it any canonicity. I don't know why I came up with that reason when a much more obvious answer was pretty much staring me in the face, but I still laugh when I think about it. Kinda like how I laugh at the idea of Virgil actually managing to have a kid even though there's not a real person in the world that would wanna have his kid outside of the weirdos that say they would even though they know they couldn't support it, and knowing that there's no way in hell Virgil would pay his child support.
