Why do the writers keep thinking that EVERY villain needs to be sympathetic and misunderstood? To the point where the good guys are fighting the other good guys and causing more destruction than the actual bad guys? Not every villain has to be Joker 2019 or Thanos, sometimes all a story needs is someone with the opposite values of the protagonist and who is impossibly powerful and unbeatable that the protagonists need to struggle to overcome. Look at Roman Torchwick ffs. Just a selfish gangster with an ego and a bad mouth, and in his life he was infinitely more lovable than Cinder. Easy fix for cinders back story: show the huntsman help her escape, train her, they form a father-daughter relationship (show it explicitly RT) he is proud of her and one day he trusts her enough to carry a weapon. (By this point cinder is almost an adult).Cinder is reminded of her former family (idk have her see one of them on the street) this reawakens her repressed anger. She kills them that night and the huntsman finds out. He attempts to bring her into the authorities for murder. Cinder feels betrayed by this and the two duke it out. Cinder is victorious but feels empty. She’s killed both of her families and starts to lose it. A small crowd finds her loudly crying and standing over the corpses. They send for help. But one of the bystanders is none other than Dr Watts. He helps her escape. He offers her a place to go and Cinder accepts, not having any options. Watts brings her to Salem and explains Cinders presence Salem love bombs her like a cult leader. Cinder projects her need for a parental figure into Salem which is taken advantage of. This dynamic explains Cinders unquestioning loyalty of Salem and why she’s always trying to impress her. Salem uses this relationship as her ultimate weapon as Cinder has shown a history of ruthlessness and fighting ability. Salem could also be shown to offer Cinder “greatness” via the maiden powers. Have a dialogue line where Salem says something like “you were raised a slave, with my power you’ll be the master.” This would explain why cinder has a short sighted desire for power. She views it as never being a servant ever again. Ironically this desire is what solidifies her as a servant. It’s all there and it need just a few quick scenes and dialogue line and you’ve created a more dynamic villain. Also, yeah season 4/5 should’ve been when they showed Cinders arc. If fits in perfectly with the scene where Salem is berating Cinder for her failure. It’s literally the perfect time to show how their relationship came about.

I like that. I like that a lot

This is a pretty interesting idea, my main issue however is how Watts just shows up out of nowhere by coincidence. It would make more sense if Cinder was for example arrested and after watching recordings of her rampage after it went viral Watts broke her out of jail. It would also help if Salem and Watts had a discussion about taking in such a young and inexperienced person who just killed the last person who tried to help her. And of course, in order to keep the idea of Cinder killing Watts you would either have to show him openly exploiting and mocking Cinder with his knowledge of her past, or you could have him go back on some promise he made to her when they first met.
@buffruhdy3 жыл бұрын
@@lowesmanager8193 The prison break idea isn’t bad as long as it was kept really short. This episode would already be like 30 minutes long. My idea isn’t exactly the most explicit so fill in the gaps with whatever you like. The coincidence was merely to save on time. I do think showing the implication of a conversation between Watts and Salem would be good though. A line like “A girl with promise, as you requested” when Watts presents Cinder to Salem. This gives the implication that Watts was looking for another disciple at Salem’s request. Pair that with the fact that Cinder is the only woman working for Salem pre-season 4 and it tells you that Watts was looking a woman to be Salem’s maiden sponge. No conversation scene required. Idk what the whole cinder-wanting-to-kill-Watts thing was about but I think the show has done a good enough job showing why Cinder wouldn’t mind roasting Watts on a spit.

Instead of trying to hire high profile voice actors like Vic, they should’ve been looking for some writing staff who could tell them when their ideas aren’t going to work. However, they never explained what and how they are going to achieve it (they never even consider other factors or what kind of resources at their disposal to make it even close to possible). And even when Ruby is handed the reigns of control and leadership she does nothing with it. After Amity tower is brought up she tells people about Salem and how Atlas needs help but then tells them to not trust Ironwood. Ruby's plan was literally Ironwood's plan copy-pasted but without the proper resources or back ups. Ironwood was commanding soldiers out on the battlefield, Ruby tried to do one thing, failed then sat down to have tea. She then got on May's ass when she wanted to go help Mantle yet **still** didn't do shit until Penny showed up in the front yard. Despite the fact that he wasn't prepared for Salem's whale he worked around that and created a bomb to destroy it. Let's be honest, if Oscar did not have a pocket nuke and Emerald never switched sides, Ruby would have failed horrendously. She doesn't fly down to help and she only kills the hound because it went to her first. We're meant to believe that team RWBY is in the right but they seem to have their asses saved by pure luck and nothing else. Even when she has the opportunity to use her super unique trait which can beat Cinder with one shot, **she doesn't use it**. It feels like nobody is willing to actually be honest with Ruby. For Cinders backstory, I think it would’ve made more sense if Rhodes was actually just evil and he knew what he was doing was gonna raise a monster and that’s just what he wanted. So when she actually kills her foster family, and Rhodes finds her afterwards, you realize “Oh he wasn’t stupid, he was just evil.”
@amirgarcia5473 жыл бұрын
That’d actually be pretty smart tbh, if he had a vendetta against Cinder’s family and so trained her in the hopes that she would kill them one day. It’d also have it make sense as to why he didn’t try to get her out of her abusive household. Too bad the writers aren’t competent enough to even consider that though-
@GuyIllusionMusic3 жыл бұрын
Now, I'm a little upset because that kind of backstory would have been great. they could have run away together after that as criminals until his untimely demise at the hand of someone from Ozpin's circle, giving Cinder reason to hate Ozpin and join Salem. also would be cool if Cinder has plans of betraying Salem, because she reminds her of her abusers more and more everyday.
@Pootis-Spencer3 жыл бұрын
Alternative backstory for Rhodes: He's not only some random huntsman that accidently was the only one that noticed Cinder's suffering, he's one of Salem's most trusted followers, he uses the cover of a huntsman (that he officially is, but "works alone") to be anywhere he wants and if someone questions him, he says he saw a grimm nearby or he's doing huntsman office. His mission is to locate the maidens and for that he has a nomadic lifestyle that makes him be in hotels a lot while he searchs the areas. That's why he's in the same hotel as Cinder. After seeing her, he sees potential in a ally for his own, and even if he decides to train her, he leaves her with her step mother so her empathy and sanity decreases and becomes more easy to manipulate. After Cinder kills her family, he takes her and (kinda) gaslight her into staying with him and following him anywhere he goes, he takes Cinder to meet Salem and uses his status to convince Salem to keep her, and give her a taste of a "better life": as long as she obeys, she's not mistreated, and if she succeds in the missions, she gets treats. All by the hand of Rhodes that just wants a obedient sidekick, and Cinder takes and obeys without question because he was the man that get her out of one hell, not knowing he put her into another. Rhodes eventually dies in another mission (maybe they encounter the Fall maiden but they fail to capture her), he gets badly injured and even with Cinder trying to get him to the base for Salem to heal him, is too late for him, he gives Cinder "words of advise" so she can do the same he did to her: find misserable people she can reclute to Salem. Any cost is necessary if Salem wins at the end, that's why she endures all the pain for her grim arm and shocks of Salem. Rhodes just sees Cinder as an easy to manipule girl, while Cinder sees Rhodes as her father figure and the legacy she needs to carry.

From what I heard in other videos, there are two ways of story telling 1. Having an end goal and building from step 1 to reach that end goal 2. Having a beginning base and building everything on top of that to gain some sort of long term adventure and resolution Obviously both have their risks and rewards but the RT writers really messed up with their "Building from the base" option. When Monty Oum passed, his "base, ended up getting adopted by the new writers and since they comeptlely ignored the baseline he had in mind, lots of detailed got mixed or lost. They had no goal in mind so everything ends up turning left instead of right. (Characters start drinking potions of forgetfulness and lose their original character developments for the sake of plot)

Also, in 'Episode Persona 4: Arena', the announcer tells Ruby and Weiss that the investigation team (and Ragna) are planning to uses their keystone for a diabolical purpose. She has no physical evidence of this, she doesn't state why they're evil, and they're fully aware that the announcer is the host of the tournament (or is working for the host) that's forcing them to fight, and yet Ruby and Weiss are firmly convinced that they're villains, and it takes an excessive amount of explaining for them to snap out of it.

I cannot blame anyone for being tired of RWBY. The writers of RWBY simply don't know how to write a story at all and never have. They constantly make the same mistakes over and over again and never seem to learn. The first three volumes that everyone consistently says are the "best volumes" were due to Monty's fight scene choreography, but I think a lot of folks get wrong that Monty had any sort of grand or over arching plan as he's stated in interviews that he "left the details to Miles and Kerry. This has been evident since day one, but RWBY is a neat idea and we all rolled with it in the hopes it'll get better. Monty's fight scene choreography carried the show for the first three volumes. Then we got the rose tinted glasses ripped off when RWBY didn't have Monty's expertise to carry the show through anymore. 8 Volumes later, and nothing has changed or really improved with the fundamental story telling elements and plot always supersedes characters and any development. I'd be willing to bet that if we stopped watching RWBY now and waited until the last episode aired, absolutely nothing of value will be lost on missing however many episodes of the show are left as nothing will happen that will be important to concluding whatever the final confrontation will be at this point. Why? Because they've consistently shown that only the current episode is canon and characters are tools to make the plot happen (rather than the characters driving the plot to happen through, you know, their character).
@frenchfriedbagel70353 жыл бұрын
Wasn’t season 3 the tournament? Monty was gone by then.
@Pbness3 жыл бұрын
I know that, in a lot of instances, Monty's fight scenes provided more instances of showing and not telling than the rest of the show (what Miles and Kerry wrote). And those little instances along with the fight choreography gave the hope of a better show. The plot problems also added to the charm of it being by a smaller team and not a large company, something a little more forgivable when you don't have the funding to know if a show is going to take off or not. Monty also argued with Miles and Kerry a lot on things that they wanted to put in that Monty disagreed with. And while the whole of Volumes 1-3 aren't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, at least there's character development and, for the majority of the time, the characters actions make sense. I think we have Monty to thank for pushing back on things that could've arguably made the show a lot worse. I just wish Monty was still alive because even if we had a crap show, we'd at least have fantastic fight scenes..
@aleciad72183 жыл бұрын
You're 100% right with the rose-tinted glasses. Excluding the fight scenes, volumes 1-3 were actually very poorly written, with some scenes being downright terrible--Jaune not knowing what Auras were and Pyrrha infodumping it to him comes to mind. It was clear the writers were winging it from the very beginning, and that would've been okay as long as they had learned from their mistakes and IMPROVED, especially during volume 4...but no, the writing got significantly worse from there.

This was actually a problem even back in the "Good Old Days" of the show. Faunus are supposedly discriminated against, right? So let's have the bully character pick on a random Faunus girl to show that. Good enough. Unfortunately, the fans liked the Faunus girl so much, they wanted her as a recurring character....for some reason. It wasn't for any reason I could see, since she had all of ten seconds of screentime. Okay, sure, now she's a character. She's now called "Velvet Scarlatina" and has a voice actress and everything. Except what does she do? What is she doing here? Well, she's a student at Beacon. Does she have teammates? Oh shit, now we have to come up with three whole OTHER characters to be her teammates, because that's the thing you do at Beacon. And give THEM names and weapons and Semblances and personalities and everything else that comes with a character in this universe (most of which were only actually given years later in an official side-novel) Coming back to the Faunus discrimination bit (which we barely EVER actually see), we need a character to serve as a foil for Blake, the Faunus who grew up being discriminated (supposedly.) Someone who's TOO COOL to let such petty things weigh him down for long. Okay, very good, we have a nice character concept going here. We'll call him Sun Wukong. So, what's he like? Where's he going? Oh. he's transferring to Beacon? That's cool. Does he have teammates too? Fuck, now we have to come up with three MORE characters! Character bloat has, and has always been, a problem from the very beginning.

The show's theme is completely incoherent, which completely kills it for me. That's like, the most important thing to adhere by when writing. @JenamDrag0n2 жыл бұрын
@@MiaoNya I wouldn't say theme is necessarily the first thing a person should ask when writing a story. Some people can't write that way. My stories tend to develop first from characters and a neat premise rather than theme. However, by the time you finish the first draft, you should be able to see what the theme is or wants to be and can relay that to someone in a concise sentence if they ask.

Also consider this: literally every time Ozpin has ever tried to get the upper hand against Salem, it always blew up in his face and he'd lose yet another part of the world that can never be reclaimed, like Beacon, Atlas, and Mantle in the present. All he can do is keep a stalemate with Salem, depriving her of resources, but that's it. The protagonists have literally no chance of actually stopping her. It's funny, you actually think that the whole "you sacrificed everyone else" thing was inconsistent with Ironwood losing his arm. BUT, you missed the fact that the show operates with the outdated trope of "machine bad, flesh good". The army of robots brought in to replace the child soldiers was portrayed as a bad thing cause robots bad. Yang's arm isn't a gift to aid her after a horrific injury, it's "just an addition". Penny's can't appreciate life right until getting a real body. Ironwood didn't sacrifice his arm... In Kerry Shawcross' own words for that scene, "And then of course Ironwood now losing.. another part of his humanity. Get it?" It's ironic, cause as much as they want RWBY to be a real anime, I'm rather surprised at how dismissive the show is to tech and robots when eastern media often gives such things life of their own that arguably is no less valuable than our own. Amongst my friends that enjoy RWBY, the general consensus regarding Ironwood's mental state shattering into a million pieces and becoming antagonistic towards the kids is... What the fuck did you think would happen? He's a man who at this point is carrying the weight of the ENTIRE world on his shoulders, he has done nothing but try to save as many lives as possible since he was INTRODUCED as a character, an immortal witch with a massive flying whale and an army of demons is on his doorstep, and all of the people he thought were his friends and allies have not only betrayed him but basically spit in his face in the middle of a crisis. How the fuck would you react in a situation like that? But no, Ironwood was getting too much sympathy for being the intelligent man in a room full of idealistic children, so they had to make him commit genocide so that they could bluntly and ham-fistedly shove down the audience's throat that "hey guys, you're not supposed to like him because he's baaaaaaaaaaad now." I honestly feel like Ironwood's Semblance was some crap made up by the writers during that zoom meeting. Not *once* is Mettle shown, explained, or even mentioned in the show; and this is strange since there's almost always an exposition dump on what a character's Semblance does. Ironwood's horrific actions and psychotic behavior are portrayed to be a conscious choice on his part and the writers don't treat it as a tragedy, rather they do everything in their power to make him as unlikeable as possible. His allies aren't sympathetic toward him or try to help him, which is especially weird in Winter's case since she and Ironwood are so close that she'd *have* to know about his Semblance and its effect on his mental state. Furthermore, when Ironwood's Aura is depleted (which disables someone's Semblance, according to the writers) Ironwood *still* acts crazy, kills Jacques, and tries to kill Winter.

I still think his Semblance, Mettle, could've worked if it was properly utilized in story. Why not have it not only strengthen his resolve but the resolve of his own soldiers and allies? It would give him and his troops an edge in battle. Making them more determined to win the fight and keep on going no matter how many numbers they losing. Forcing their enemies to retreat because of his army's relentless numbers. Kinda like Bastila's Battle Meditation from Knights of the Old Republic. But Ironwood decided to use it wisely and carefully because it can give him tunnel vision as it can strengthen any resolve, no matter the morality of it. Once he sets a goal, he almost can't stop. And it doesn't help that he's naturally bullheaded. And it can be dangerous if he's emotionally compromised. Also another reason that while it gives his forces an edge in battle, it can potentially stretch his forces thin and rapidly diminish all of their man power. Nor does he want to control his men like robots. Thus, he can only use it when desperate times call for desperate measures. Like what's going in V8 for instance. Come to think of it, Ironwood should've been temporarily removed from command in the first place after the whole Battle of Beacon and the Dust Embargo. I know from a military standpoint that if a general is mentally unstable, emotionally compromised or suffering from PTSD, they will be removed from command, by force if necessary. If a general can't keep his head on, he's a danger to them all. If Atlas' military doctrine is anything like ours, that's what should've been done. Winter, being second-in-command, would have assumed temporary command until Ironwood calmed down. But that's blind loyalty for ya.

You do realize that companies say all that sentimental stuff all the time to seem like they mean well, when in reality, they just want money? Movie studios will say stuff like "we made a sequel to continue the story told in the previous one." but their main reason is because the 1st movie made a lot of money. Sure, it might have been the crew's original intention to continue Monty's vision, but at this point I doubt that's still it. And having Monty's brother doesn't really mean anything. The Ghostbusters remake had cameos from the OG cast, but that movie clearly didn't care about the source material.

This’s actually a pretty apt comparison tbh. Especially since both scenarios lack any nuance, as TLOU1 left your decision as morally grey. Having the player sit there after the credits and truly ponder “did I really do the right thing?” While the sequel just entirely throws this out the window to be like “nope, Joel was a monster all along and deserved to die for killing people who were about to lobotimize an unconscious teenage girl without her consent.” Instead of trying to make both sides flawed, just like with RWBY, it instead entirely demonized one side just to make the other one seem better in comparison.

@@amirgarcia547 Exactly. And their way of saying that Joel is wrong is done outside of the game by having the devs claim that the operation would have been a success. But no, it doesn't work that way. I can suspend my disbelief and pretend that in a fictional world, there is a way to develop a vaccine for a fungal infection in the brain when we have yet to even perfect one to prevent fungal infections on the skin. I can even believe it if they said that they can reproduce Ellie's mutation or that they worked on many other subjects who are immune to the infection and have now perfected the operation and only need one last test subject. But if all of that isn't said or explained in the game, then I'll apply real world knowledge and common sense to say that the fireflies didn't know what they were doing and that Joel did the right thing since Ellie would have died for nothing. Having the story teller give me facts outside of the story doesn't do it for me. It's comparable to someone who has messed up and is now trying to justify himself. Even releasing a comic or novel that will barely reach 20% of the fanbase to explain what was poorly executed or established is wrong.

In this show, if a man so much as disagrees with a woman, he's evil. And if a woman wants to just "switch sides" for no other reason than survival without a hint of remorse for the lives she helped take (she's indirectly responsible for Penny's first death, Pyrrha's death and Yang losing her arm, by helping Cinder in the first place) then we're supposed to just fawn over her "Brave" decision. We watched it because we wanted to see what Monty would do with it. But he tragically died. Then Rooster Teeth had a bit of a controversy about how the handled his charity funds. Worse, they treated the damn show like a vehicle for their message rather than what it was, an excuse to see anime girls kill big monsters. Then MORE controversy came out, and dealing with the company wasn't worth it just to get a mediocre show they put behind a paywall. Monty did great with coming up with some of the concepts, but he was the big push on the design and animation side and let others drive the narrative side after helping with the big concepts. RT bit off more than they had the writing talent to deal with. If they had kept the story small scale with more action, maybe cut the run time in half with a focus on the characters and their relationships before gradually opening up the world, then I think more people would have been on board and given their writing team a chance to plan forward and develop their own skills and then later switching to more big story type scripts. Now that I stop to think about it, that's pretty much how they grew Red vs Blue. We grew to love those dumb ass characters and were happy to follow them along as they ended up in bigger and bigger messes. That's right there speaks volumes on how they see they're LGBT+ characters, not as normal people just like the rest of us, but as a tool to be used as marketing their show to score some brownie points for being "revolutionary". Hell, Pilot Boi is also an example of this because they thought we'd hate him for being mean. Because as we all know, gay people will do anything and everything for you if you tell them. Jaune's sister and her wife are proof of this is how Miles and Kerry think when Jaune's sister helps them trespass on a military base to help them steal a jet and have her infant child involved as well.
