Seeing what RWBY is now is like seeing your lifelong friend slowly become addicted to drugs, and no matter how many times you try to get help for them, they push back in denial and say that they’re fine.

They tried to get us to fell sympathy for Cinder - the bitch who killed Pyrrah. At the same time, they tried to get us to hate Ironwood - the guy who, with no prodding, gave a woman he barely knew a robot arm she didn't earn, made the main characters official huntsmen, and put his full trust in the main characters despite how they never earned his trust. Then RT wonders why people are angry about this.

Why do the writers keep thinking that EVERY villain needs to be sympathetic and misunderstood? To the point where the good guys are fighting the other good guys and causing more destruction than the actual bad guys? Not every villain has to be Joker 2019 or Thanos, sometimes all a story needs is someone with the opposite values of the protagonist and who is impossibly powerful and unbeatable that the protagonists need to struggle to overcome. Look at Roman Torchwick ffs. Just a selfish gangster with an ego and a bad mouth, and in his life he was infinitely more lovable than Cinder. Salem went from terrifying Grimm Satan to an entitled woman who was so self centered that she held a sword to God’s face and was surprised when she and everyone else was punished

The most tragic thing about this show is remembering the very first trailer. The red trailer. How back then we all thought it was special. And how all that incredible potential has been completely wasted just because a pair of talentless stuck-up morons refused to study even the tiniest bit of the do's and don'ts of narrative writing.

Easy fix for cinders back story: show the huntsman help her escape, train her, they form a father-daughter relationship (show it explicitly RT) he is proud of her and one day he trusts her enough to carry a weapon. (By this point cinder is almost an adult).Cinder is reminded of her former family (idk have her see one of them on the street) this reawakens her repressed anger. She kills them that night and the huntsman finds out. He attempts to bring her into the authorities for murder. Cinder feels betrayed by this and the two duke it out. Cinder is victorious but feels empty. She’s killed both of her families and starts to lose it. A small crowd finds her loudly crying and standing over the corpses. They send for help. But one of the bystanders is none other than Dr Watts. He helps her escape. He offers her a place to go and Cinder accepts, not having any options. Watts brings her to Salem and explains Cinders presence Salem love bombs her like a cult leader. Cinder projects her need for a parental figure into Salem which is taken advantage of. This dynamic explains Cinders unquestioning loyalty of Salem and why she’s always trying to impress her. Salem uses this relationship as her ultimate weapon as Cinder has shown a history of ruthlessness and fighting ability. Salem could also be shown to offer Cinder “greatness” via the maiden powers. Have a dialogue line where Salem says something like “you were raised a slave, with my power you’ll be the master.” This would explain why cinder has a short sighted desire for power. She views it as never being a servant ever again. Ironically this desire is what solidifies her as a servant. It’s all there and it need just a few quick scenes and dialogue line and you’ve created a more dynamic villain. Also, yeah season 4/5 should’ve been when they showed Cinders arc. If fits in perfectly with the scene where Salem is berating Cinder for her failure. It’s literally the perfect time to show how their relationship came about.

This is a pretty interesting idea, my main issue however is how Watts just shows up out of nowhere by coincidence. It would make more sense if Cinder was for example arrested and after watching recordings of her rampage after it went viral Watts broke her out of jail. It would also help if Salem and Watts had a discussion about taking in such a young and inexperienced person who just killed the last person who tried to help her. And of course, in order to keep the idea of Cinder killing Watts you would either have to show him openly exploiting and mocking Cinder with his knowledge of her past, or you could have him go back on some promise he made to her when they first met.
@buffruddy297
@buffruddy297 3 жыл бұрын
@@lowesmanager8193 The prison break idea isn’t bad as long as it was kept really short. This episode would already be like 30 minutes long. My idea isn’t exactly the most explicit so fill in the gaps with whatever you like. The coincidence was merely to save on time. I do think showing the implication of a conversation between Watts and Salem would be good though. A line like “A girl with promise, as you requested” when Watts presents Cinder to Salem. This gives the implication that Watts was looking for another disciple at Salem’s request. Pair that with the fact that Cinder is the only woman working for Salem pre-season 4 and it tells you that Watts was looking a woman to be Salem’s maiden sponge. No conversation scene required. Idk what the whole cinder-wanting-to-kill-Watts thing was about but I think the show has done a good enough job showing why Cinder wouldn’t mind roasting Watts on a spit.

@buffruddy297 2 жыл бұрын
@@SparkShadow212 less than the duration of this video. I just asked myself what I wanted from the show and how It could be conveyed without changing too much. Granted, it’s easier to fix a product that’s already been made, rather than make a product from scratch. Still, the RWBY team at Roosterteeth has been dropping the ball on the show for years and years. Instead of trying to hire high profile voice actors like Vic, they should’ve been looking for some writing staff who could tell them when their ideas aren’t going to work. It sucks because every few seasons, we get a glimpse of excellence from the writers (season 3, season 6s apathy episodes, and season 7s 2nd half) which only makes me more sad when the show keeps crapping the bed.

@@thomasraines1396That whole thing with Ruby lacking hand-to-hand skills is something they should've gotten more into. While I did like the part with her improvising and knocking Mercury out with a headbutt. I would've been amazing to see Ruby get a little resourceful in situations where her weapon is lost or stolen to compensate for her inability to fight hand-to-hand. Maybe if Beacon never fell, Team RWBY would've been given lessons in resourcefulness, adaptability and survival skills. I mean I can understand that Ruby isn't as strong in hand-to-hand combat as Yang or a few others. But that doesn't mean she can't get resourceful.

The rules of writing RWBY 1. All characters are only as smart as the plot allows. 2. Only the current volume is canon. 3. Shipping > character development . 4. There's no power scaling . 5. Hunters in RWBY are fucking weird, they get talked up a lot but they don’t seem to be anything more than just mercenaries, the authority they wield in the show mostly comes from other positions of power like being a general, a headmaster, or a professor being a huntsman itself doesn’t seem to give you any power over anything outside of fighting Grimm. I can’t really criticize Rhodes for not using his authority when the writers never bothered fleshing out what kind of authority full huntsman are supposed to _apparently_ have.

RWBY's been animated lazily since Oum died, they upped the quality of models and backgrounds to convince people that the animation's still good. Someone actually did a video detailing just how often the characters just randomly teleported around the room in the V5 finale fight, it was about an hour long! That was the only reason I even agreed with Ironwood's plan. In truth, I really didn't like Ironwood's plan. However, he was the only one that has a plan, and details of what and how to do it. RWBY didn't even have a plan, nor did they offer any alternatives to Ironwood's plan. Sure, they want to save everyone. However, they never explained what and how they are going to achieve it (they never even consider other factors or what kind of resources at their disposal to make it even close to possible). Especially since their plan seems to be based on the fact that their enemies can be defeated, in which they themselves know that isn't possible (like you stated, it was war of attrition with an immortal witch with infinite soldiers).

And even when Ruby is handed the reigns of control and leadership she does nothing with it. After Amity tower is brought up she tells people about Salem and how Atlas needs help but then tells them to not trust Ironwood. Her plan was literally to hope that other people would swoop in and save the day for her. And when that realistically doesn't happen she gets into tears over it. Really?! Ruby's plan was literally Ironwood's plan copy-pasted but without the proper resources or back ups. Ironwood was commanding soldiers out on the battlefield, Ruby tried to do one thing, failed then sat down to have tea. She then got on May's ass when she wanted to go help Mantle yet **still** didn't do shit until Penny showed up in the front yard. Despite the fact that he wasn't prepared for Salem's whale he worked around that and created a bomb to destroy it. Let's be honest, if Oscar did not have a pocket nuke and Emerald never switched sides, Ruby would have failed horrendously. She doesn't fly down to help and she only kills the hound because it went to her first. We're meant to believe that team RWBY is in the right but they seem to have their asses saved by pure luck and nothing else. Even when she has the opportunity to use her super unique trait which can beat Cinder with one shot, **she doesn't use it**. It feels like nobody is willing to actually be honest with Ruby. She mopes around in angst before being told everything is alright and that she's doing well when she isn't. From an objective standpoint she fails at being a decent leader and strategist, yet we're still told that she is the good guy.

Also, in 'Episode Persona 4: Arena', the announcer tells Ruby and Weiss that the investigation team (and Ragna) are planning to uses their keystone for a diabolical purpose. She has no physical evidence of this, she doesn't state why they're evil, and they're fully aware that the announcer is the host of the tournament (or is working for the host) that's forcing them to fight, and yet Ruby and Weiss are firmly convinced that they're villains, and it takes an excessive amount of explaining for them to snap out of it.

It's funny, you actually think that the whole "you sacrificed everyone else" thing was inconsistent with Ironwood losing his arm. BUT, you missed the fact that the show operates with the outdated trope of "machine bad, flesh good". The army of robots brought in to replace the child soldiers was portrayed as a bad thing cause robots bad. Yang's arm isn't a gift to aid her after a horrific injury, it's "just an addition". Penny's can't appreciate life right until getting a real body. Ironwood didn't sacrifice his arm... In Kerry Shawcross' own words for that scene, "And then of course Ironwood now losing.. another part of his humanity. Get it?" It's ironic, cause as much as they want RWBY to be a real anime, I'm rather surprised at how dismissive the show is to tech and robots when eastern media often gives such things life of their own that arguably is no less valuable than our own. Otherwise, the worldbuilding sucked. The story sucked. The jokes sucked. It was cute, but only so-so. The story was literally just a vehicle for him to show off his animations, and that's a-ok. We watched it because we wanted to see what Monty would do with it. But he tragically died. Then Rooster Teeth had a bit of a controversy about how the handled his charity funds. Worse, they treated the damn show like a vehicle for their message rather than what it was, an excuse to see anime girls kill big monsters. Then MORE controversy came out, and dealing with the company wasn't worth it just to get a mediocre show they put behind a paywall. I'm not going to expound their other mistakes, I'd have to write a freaking essay, and this went on long enough. In short, they shit him.

@Otneimica they wanted to build this big grand world but lacked the imagination and storytelling chops to pull it off. Monty did great with coming up with some of the concepts, but he was the big push on the design and animation side and let others drive the narrative side after helping with the big concepts. RT bit off more than they had the writing talent to deal with. If they had kept the story small scale with more action, maybe cut the run time in half with a focus on the characters and their relationships before gradually opening up the world, then I think more people would have been on board and given their writing team a chance to plan forward and develop their own skills and then later switching to more big story type scripts. Now that I stop to think about it, that's pretty much how they grew Red vs Blue. We grew to love those dumb ass characters and were happy to follow them along as they ended up in bigger and bigger messes. If they tried to first lay out all the stuff with multiple secret organizations and conspiracies, it probably would have sucked and might not have caught on.

In this show, if a man so much as disagrees with a woman, he's evil. And if a woman wants to just "switch sides" for no other reason than survival without a hint of remorse for the lives she helped take (she's indirectly responsible for Penny's first death, Pyrrha's death and Yang losing her arm, by helping Cinder in the first place) then we're supposed to just fawn over her "Brave" decision. I honestly feel like Ironwood's Semblance was some crap made up by the writers during that zoom meeting. Not *once* is Mettle shown, explained, or even mentioned in the show; and this is strange since there's almost always an exposition dump on what a character's Semblance does. Ironwood's horrific actions and psychotic behavior are portrayed to be a conscious choice on his part and the writers don't treat it as a tragedy, rather they do everything in their power to make him as unlikeable as possible. His allies aren't sympathetic toward him or try to help him, which is especially weird in Winter's case since she and Ironwood are so close that she'd *have* to know about his Semblance and its effect on his mental state. Furthermore, when Ironwood's Aura is depleted (which disables someone's Semblance, according to the writers) Ironwood *still* acts crazy, kills Jacques, and tries to kill Winter.

I still think his Semblance, Mettle, could've worked if it was properly utilized in story. Why not have it not only strengthen his resolve but the resolve of his own soldiers and allies? It would give him and his troops an edge in battle. Making them more determined to win the fight and keep on going no matter how many numbers they losing. Forcing their enemies to retreat because of his army's relentless numbers. Kinda like Bastila's Battle Meditation from Knights of the Old Republic. But Ironwood decided to use it wisely and carefully because it can give him tunnel vision as it can strengthen any resolve, no matter the morality of it. Once he sets a goal, he almost can't stop. And it doesn't help that he's naturally bullheaded. And it can be dangerous if he's emotionally compromised. Also another reason that while it gives his forces an edge in battle, it can potentially stretch his forces thin and rapidly diminish all of their man power. Nor does he want to control his men like robots. Thus, he can only use it when desperate times call for desperate measures. Like what's going in V8 for instance. Come to think of it, Ironwood should've been temporarily removed from command in the first place after the whole Battle of Beacon and the Dust Embargo. I know from a military standpoint that if a general is mentally unstable, emotionally compromised or suffering from PTSD, they will be removed from command, by force if necessary. If a general can't keep his head on, he's a danger to them all. If Atlas' military doctrine is anything like ours, that's what should've been done. Winter, being second-in-command, would have assumed temporary command until Ironwood calmed down. But that's blind loyalty for ya.

I still think HBomberguy summed up RWBY the best: "The show occasionally THREATENS to suddenly become good, and so you keep watching." The show always skirts just barely below being actually good, and there are brief moments (the latter half of Volume 3 comes to mind) where the show, even if for a moment, starts becoming enjoyable...And then just stops. You watch the next episode thinking that MAYBE the next episode is where the show finally gets as good as it could be, but it never does. Rooster Teeth would win my undying respect if they just cut their losses and rebooted the whole show from the very start with new lead writers.

I cannot blame anyone for being tired of RWBY. The writers of RWBY simply don't know how to write a story at all and never have. They constantly make the same mistakes over and over again and never seem to learn. The first three volumes that everyone consistently says are the "best volumes" were due to Monty's fight scene choreography, but I think a lot of folks get wrong that Monty had any sort of grand or over arching plan as he's stated in interviews that he "left the details to Miles and Kerry. This has been evident since day one, but RWBY is a neat idea and we all rolled with it in the hopes it'll get better. Monty's fight scene choreography carried the show for the first three volumes. Then we got the rose tinted glasses ripped off when RWBY didn't have Monty's expertise to carry the show through anymore. 8 Volumes later, and nothing has changed or really improved with the fundamental story telling elements and plot always supersedes characters and any development. I'd be willing to bet that if we stopped watching RWBY now and waited until the last episode aired, absolutely nothing of value will be lost on missing however many episodes of the show are left as nothing will happen that will be important to concluding whatever the final confrontation will be at this point. Why? Because they've consistently shown that only the current episode is canon and characters are tools to make the plot happen (rather than the characters driving the plot to happen through, you know, their character).

I know that, in a lot of instances, Monty's fight scenes provided more instances of showing and not telling than the rest of the show (what Miles and Kerry wrote). And those little instances along with the fight choreography gave the hope of a better show. The plot problems also added to the charm of it being by a smaller team and not a large company, something a little more forgivable when you don't have the funding to know if a show is going to take off or not. Monty also argued with Miles and Kerry a lot on things that they wanted to put in that Monty disagreed with. And while the whole of Volumes 1-3 aren't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, at least there's character development and, for the majority of the time, the characters actions make sense. I think we have Monty to thank for pushing back on things that could've arguably made the show a lot worse. I just wish Monty was still alive because even if we had a crap show, we'd at least have fantastic fight scenes..

@aleciad7218 3 жыл бұрын
You're 100% right with the rose-tinted glasses. Excluding the fight scenes, volumes 1-3 were actually very poorly written, with some scenes being downright terrible--Jaune not knowing what Auras were and Pyrrha infodumping it to him comes to mind. It was clear the writers were winging it from the very beginning, and that would've been okay as long as they had learned from their mistakes and IMPROVED, especially during volume 4...but no, the writing got significantly worse from there.

@@frenchfriedbagel7035 Monty often worked ahead with his scenes etc. so most of his contribution to Volume 3 was done by the time of his unfortunate death. From what I heard in other videos, there are two ways of story telling 1. Having an end goal and building from step 1 to reach that end goal 2. Having a beginning base and building everything on top of that to gain some sort of long term adventure and resolution Obviously both have their risks and rewards but the RT writers really messed up with their "Building from the base" option. When Monty Oum passed, his "base, ended up getting adopted by the new writers and since they comeptlely ignored the baseline he had in mind, lots of detailed got mixed or lost. They had no goal in mind so everything ends up turning left instead of right. (Characters start drinking potions of forgetfulness and lose their original character developments for the sake of plot)

Now, I'm a little upset because that kind of backstory would have been great. they could have run away together after that as criminals until his untimely demise at the hand of someone from Ozpin's circle, giving Cinder reason to hate Ozpin and join Salem. also would be cool if Cinder has plans of betraying Salem, because she reminds her of her abusers more and more everyday.
@Pootis-Spencer
@Pootis-Spencer 3 жыл бұрын
Alternative backstory for Rhodes: He's not only some random huntsman that accidently was the only one that noticed Cinder's suffering, he's one of Salem's most trusted followers, he uses the cover of a huntsman (that he officially is, but "works alone") to be anywhere he wants and if someone questions him, he says he saw a grimm nearby or he's doing huntsman office. His mission is to locate the maidens and for that he has a nomadic lifestyle that makes him be in hotels a lot while he searchs the areas. That's why he's in the same hotel as Cinder. After seeing her, he sees potential in a ally for his own, and even if he decides to train her, he leaves her with her step mother so her empathy and sanity decreases and becomes more easy to manipulate. After Cinder kills her family, he takes her and (kinda) gaslight her into staying with him and following him anywhere he goes, he takes Cinder to meet Salem and uses his status to convince Salem to keep her, and give her a taste of a "better life": as long as she obeys, she's not mistreated, and if she succeds in the missions, she gets treats. All by the hand of Rhodes that just wants a obedient sidekick, and Cinder takes and obeys without question because he was the man that get her out of one hell, not knowing he put her into another. Rhodes eventually dies in another mission (maybe they encounter the Fall maiden but they fail to capture her), he gets badly injured and even with Cinder trying to get him to the base for Salem to heal him, is too late for him, he gives Cinder "words of advise" so she can do the same he did to her: find misserable people she can reclute to Salem. Any cost is necessary if Salem wins at the end, that's why she endures all the pain for her grim arm and shocks of Salem. Rhodes just sees Cinder as an easy to manipule girl, while Cinder sees Rhodes as her father figure and the legacy she needs to carry.

Why not portray this version of the original Cinderella story characters backward: Cinder was evil and abusive even from the start, her step-sisters were kind, cute and likable, and her step-mother is a good caring parent? Her backstory in the canon version felt lazy and poorly written as the writers thought having a villain with a tragic backstory makes it automatically a 'good villain', but it was not true when Lord Voldemort, Pennywise and King Ghidorah are great villains despite without sympathy, and even Maleficent in the live-action Disney film was criticized for being tragic, unlike the original version, and Anikan Skywalker was criticized as a 'bad character' while being tragic back then. I think the writers are ripping off Thanos and decided to borrow that idea and put that in context; I personally thought Thanos is an overrated villain because of it.

The problem with team RWBY is by Volume 8 the entire world is clearly at war for survival and it is going terribly. Whole kingdoms are being toppled, tons of civilians are drying, and you have to do everything you can to save who you can and ensure you can still fight another day. "Saving everyone" is a noble goal, but they need to consider how they plan to do that. They should know better by now that sacrifices have to be made for the greater good or else you might loose everything but they somehow are still acting like fresh beacon students and are somehow not considered to be in the wrong or missing info, no, RWBY are the only people who are in the right and everyone else is wrong. Ironwood is nothing but helpful and tries to save at least half of the people about to be killed, but no, he's just a "genocide general" who's evil because he has robot parts and the "right decision" was to let both cities be destroyed and teleport people from a cold climate to the desert full of grimm. RWBY as a show is like some of those awful houses from those HGTV "fixxer upper" shows. "Its got good bones" but you need to strip just about all of it out down to the very base parts and start fresh to get a proper, good, result. RWBY needs a reboot asap but I doubt it'll ever happen. Finally. A critic that validates my opinion on Ironwood. I say this mostly because I was disgusted by the character assassination, nay slaughter, of Ironwood. The man had a very valid argument to saving just Atlas as macabre as it was and when I saw the RWBY crew disagree I was like "are you kidding? what the hell plan do you have?" And as this video shows, the answer was none. The writer's just plopped a solution in their lap, and even THEN they didn't succeed in saving everyone. People died in DROVES, Atlas and everything under it got sent to kingdom COME. And before anyone says "well Ironwood was the one who made the threats and bla, bla.." it all STARTED because RWBY doesn't practice what they preach when it comes to trust, and on top of that the writers clearly just wanted Ironwood to be a secondary villain. He was shown to be very reasonable if a bit cold in the earlier seasons but they just removed all reason from him and I'm supposed to believe it's cause of his semblance or because of the trauma of everything going wrong and now he's a control freak. I'm not buying it. You don't get to Ironwood's position without being good at handling stress/being a good PROBLEM SOLVING LEADER so miss me with the trauma crap, and as for semblance I think that was just an ass pull to justify such a hard character swerve. The main reason I get so riled up about all this and why I appreciate this video so much is because even if I'm hyper focused on ONE of the reasons you listed for being Tired of RWBY, I do so because I watch it on Crunchyroll and I had to sift through a sea of mindless comments talking about "whaaa? he's so evil. his plan is dumb. he should just save EVERYONE with team RWBY because of COURSE they can do it." Not only is all that bs only believable when you're the audience and you know that team RWBY is the protagonist, with how the writer's decided to take things, you didn't even GET that happy ending you wanted where you save everyone. Hella people died, and half of them were main characters and over the most inane bull. Don't even get me started on what happened with Clover.

In my opinion, they should have gave the Stepmother a Semblance. Like something called "Silence". For example, if Cinder tries to speak up about the abuse, the stepmother's semblance would activate, forcing Cinder to keep quiet, whenever she tries to snitch.
@thomasraines1396
@thomasraines1396 Жыл бұрын
That would’ve been so much better then what we got, as it stands Cinder is only kept in her abusive situation for the sake of a crappy backstory. It feels like (to paraphrase a quote from a KZbin channel called “Zero Punctuation”) “A Monty Python sketch without the justification of spoof” or bit from the story “Ruins” from Marvel (an extremely depressing else-world story that was meant to act as a parody of the story “Marvels”).
@kidprime6863
@kidprime6863 6 ай бұрын
That would've explained why Cinder never told Rhodes the full details of her abuse. Rhodes gets a bad rep for his part in making Cinder a monster. In his defense, he didn't know that she was getting tortured. For all he knew, Cinder's punishments were just double chore duty and reduced payment. Plus, let's say the Semblance could either mute or "censor" if she tries speak about it to others.

People really need to stop saying old rwby had bad animation, and new rwby has good, because when you say "animation" in this context, you really mean "graphic," "visuals," the actual frigging "background." The old animation; the movement, the character expressions, all the motion in the scenes, blows the new crap outta the friggin water, they were fluid, their moves had weight, they didn't teleport around an are when the camera wasn't directly on them, the new shit teleports, is floaty to the point of weightless DBZ battles, and stiff as frozen boards and use special effects and "Anime Motion Lines" to distract the viewer and convince them that the models actually look like they're moving.

The time in the show doesn't make sense so it makes everything feels rushed.

Part of me wonders if there's a TVTropes page about an over reliance on Red Wedding situations when writing a show's plot. RWBY reminds me a lot of the later seasons of Game of Thrones. Both shows originated with great ideas & concepts created by visionaries, but creatively lead by chucklefucks. And the great moments each show had greatly outshined the weaker moments, even when one could see cracks in the foundations in regards to overall creative direction. And one moment outshined them all: when they were willing to take a risk & actually have well-beloved characters being permanently killed in order to build for a bigger, more meaningful, more impactful story later on. And eventually, for one reason or another, both visionaries ended up no longer being part of these passion projects, and therefore, the passion is gone. They're just _projects_ now, and because the creative leads lack _actual creativity,_ they've become reliant on what are now overplayed tropes: introducing new characters no one cares about or likes, while failing to develop the well-beloved characters before killing them off because shock value & contrived conflicts are the only things keeping these projects from completely falling apart.

Therea re some terms more than others that im familiar but i try my best to point out if there is something that is close to what the original post here was saying. Hm now that im there i think i would like to expand with the tropes i know tf there is a precise one or rather, wich tropes would adjust to the description: I think it is a mixoff tropes plus one i did not add. So we got the shocking swerve wich is about poorly recieved or handled twists. Character derailment or flanderization for flaws, arc fatigue for when the big picture is taking forver or stalled. Now since i am not knowleY i don't know wich is wich. Individually it could be just one bad episode or moment, but since they are part off a larger problem and one off them being a constant issue off a twist after another without knowing what worked spreading all over the end...there is a trope i feel appropiate for this: Franchise Original sin. If all the messes can be rooted to way before voulme 3 or arround that timeother trope i feel is fitting. Amongst my friends that enjoy RWBY, the general consensus regarding Ironwood's mental state shattering into a million pieces and becoming antagonistic towards the kids is... What the fuck did you think would happen? He's a man who at this point is carrying the weight of the ENTIRE world on his shoulders, he has done nothing but try to save as many lives as possible since he was INTRODUCED as a character, an immortal witch with a massive flying whale and an army of demons is on his doorstep, and all of the people he thought were his friends and allies have not only betrayed him but basically spit in his face in the middle of a crisis. How the fuck would you react in a situation like that? But no, Ironwood was getting too much sympathy for being the intelligent man in a room full of idealistic children, so they had to make him commit genocide so that they could bluntly and ham-fistedly shove down the audience's throat that "hey guys, you're not supposed to like him because he's baaaaaaaaaaad now." Shit pissed me off to absolutely no end.

This was actually a problem even back in the "Good Old Days" of the show. Faunus are supposedly discriminated against, right? So let's have the bully character pick on a random Faunus girl to show that. Good enough. Unfortunately, the fans liked the Faunus girl so much, they wanted her as a recurring character....for some reason. It wasn't for any reason I could see, since she had all of ten seconds of screentime. Okay, sure, now she's a character. She's now called "Velvet Scarlatina" and has a voice actress and everything. Except what does she do? What is she doing here? Well, she's a student at Beacon. Does she have teammates? Oh shit, now we have to come up with three whole OTHER characters to be her teammates, because that's the thing you do at Beacon. And give THEM names and weapons and Semblances and personalities and everything else that comes with a character in this universe (most of which were only actually given years later in an official side-novel) Coming back to the Faunus discrimination bit (which we barely EVER actually see), we need a character to serve as a foil for Blake, the Faunus who grew up being discriminated (supposedly.) Someone who's TOO COOL to let such petty things weigh him down for long. Okay, very good, we have a nice character concept going here. We'll call him Sun Wukong. So, what's he like? Where's he going? Oh. he's transferring to Beacon? That's cool. Does he have teammates too? Fuck, now we have to come up with three MORE characters! Character bloat has, and has always been, a problem from the very beginning.

I don't know what I'm more pissed at. Penny getting a body and dying 2 episodes later, or Winter getting the maiden powers. I've been saying for years how much I wanted Weiss to get the maiden powers, but now that I'm more invested in Winter (because the writers seem to insist on developing the side cast over the main cast. Hell they even inturrupted the RWBY vs Cinder and Neo fight for Winter vs Ironwood. TWICE i think) over the main cast I don't WANT Winter to fucking die. Speaking of characters that died: Vine. WHY VINE? That's really all I had to say about him. I liked him more than Harriet and Elm I guess. I never liked Harriet and I don't remember ANYTHING Elm did. So now the Ace Ops are down to 3 and only one of them is remotely interesting. I genuinely would've preferred Elm and/or Harriet to get blown the fuck up, if not just all 4 of the Ace Ops because let's be honest their time is done. Hell their time was done at the end of Vol 7. AND SPEAKING OF CHARACTERS THAT SHOULD BE FUCKING DEAD. FUCKING ROBYN. *ROBYN.* I hate that fucking bitch so much. Of all the characters that had to die, hell of all the characters that had received character development. It was the fucking terrorist. I would've preferred JACQUES character development over that bitch. But one good thing came from her still being alive. She can take her fucking Happy Huntresses back ASAP and they can stop eating fucking screentime. I'm serious when she rejoins her crew I want them all to die asap. I don't even care how. Make it a bad unearned death or a "heroic" death (they don't deserve it though). And lastly...how much you wanna bet we aren't gonna find those nameless people who fell off the roads, living or dead? They'll just be forgotten like everything else in the show.

People in the comments mentioned this, but DnD is a good template. RWBY characters are the simplist versions of what they are. Tropes like wise old wizard, edgy rouge whose family died, etc etc. Except, they don't go anywhere with it. Even the edgy rouge can give you an amazing story because of how that backstory informs their character. Dead parents are one thing, but make thay happrn because the rouge failed to save them and you have a person who avoids talking/ connections, but would always save someone in need if they are available, because they know what that pain is. Ruby had the character prompt of young but experienced for her age, with a talent for making weapons. Now she is an imitation of a character. Missed opportunity, Ruby makes Jaune a new shield and armor in volume 4, but because Ruby isnt as hot as Yang or Pyrra the writer didnt want their OC to have any deeper connection with them.

RT seems to think that character development means to stand in one place, say something semi philosophical and then do as you did before. It happens all the time. Also they make no visually interesting semblances anymore or have retconned them into being easier to animate. This studio is lazy. They simply do not care. I feel no passion whatsoever from the script or animation. Which is sad because the main appeal of the first three seasons was just pure passion for fun and out there stuff.
