The old K&B were excellent engines once dialed in. I have a .61 that only has a few tanks through it on my test stand that has never flown.

I was just gifted an older version of this engine. The one I have didn't come with a muffler. It looks like some of them (maybe all??) were fitted with a baffle in the exhaust port. I was able to find a slip on muffler for this engine on eBay though. Been pulling it apart, and man I can't believe how clean it is inside. Bearings are nearly spotless. I'll be running it soon!

I have very limited knowledge of Quickie 500, but some classes require that you choose from only a few different engines and you must run an APC 9x6 propeller. This engine would probably be right at home with a 9x6. Nice piece of history you have with that engine.

Correct. The instructions call for a 10x6 for ‘stunt’ flying and a 9x7.5 for Quickie 500 flying. When this engine makes it to the stand again I will install a 9x6 for sure if I don’t have a 9x7.

K&B we’re fine engines. Never the strongest, but price competitive. I do recall the mufflers were a bit loud, which probably helped the rpm’s due to minimal baffling. Thanks Dave

Most guys at our flying field that used to fly those engines always replaced the original carb with Perry carb, they claimed Perry carbs are way easy to dial in and performed better.

in my exp, this particular engine should be able to turn 13.5 untuned and almost 16k on a tuned pipe. awesome engine. my dad ran tower tuned pipe on his kaos kit in '95 and was getting about 15.7k with a 10*7 apc. love the k&B

Nice run, does the Q-500 perform much differently than the standard K&B 40?
