Hell yeah, they’re by far the best headphones I’ve tried for the more in-your-face genres of metal like thrash because of the elevated sub bass and the 200hz dip that keeps it from sounding muddy like bass heavy cans often do with metal. I prefer something with a little more soundstage for genres like prog, but nothing beats these for a fat, meaty, aggressive metal sound

This is my one issue with a lot of these headphone reviewers. They pretend like headphones are all equal with all genres of music. There is also a lot pretentious bullshit like hip hop or metal are not for "true audiophiles." 20 years ago i got a pair of HD600s from a friends recommendation, beautiful tuning, amazing vocals and detail, insanely boring for metal. I got a pair of DT770 80ohms shortly after, they complimented eachother so well. Breaks my heart that these "audiophile" characters can only parrot the bullshit from their echo chambers and not think critically about headphones as a tool like anything else, right tool for the right job. But hey, gotta keep tier list content coming.

I suppose they're so popular (especially for professional use like studios and stuff) because they sound good enough, detailed enough, have a good enough resolution for more intricate work and you can still enjoy listening music with them while being just built like a tank. They're basically indestructible. Change out the ear-pads every now and again and give them a new head-band-wrap after a few years and they will just last forever. Even the cable is super super sturdy. And if you happen to break your cable there are many guides on how to replace them. If they had replaceable cables they would be so much better, but maybe you need a weak point somewhere, otherwise there would be no need to producing and selling them at one point. So if you're thinking about getting the DT 770 80 Ohm: Save some money and buy them used and order a new set of cushions. And you probably can give them to your grandchildren at one point in the future, you can buy every single part of these headphones separately, even the plastic headband slider-thingy or the clamping ring for the ear cushions.

@@towsifshahriarshovo Let me just put it this way: they are tools that, although looking very similar, are used for completely different tasks. A carpenter's hammer is not a substitute for an electrician's hammer, despite both of them having a handle and a bit at the end that can hit objects. Knowing your requirements and use case will inform the decision of which one to pick, just like with any other tool. DT770 is a monitoring set, they're used by professionals in a studio environment to monitor a live recording, either while making music or for live broadcasts. The super analytical high-frequency range is very useful for picking up on any issues with the recording equipment, static, any adjustments that need to be made at the point of recording that are going to be difficult to fix later. Similarly, having that sub-bass extension is important because it lets you hear what you're recording all the way to the bottom of the frequency range, and for musicians it helps them follow the beat well. They need to reproduce the mids accurately, where most of the music lives. The studio environment informs their comfort, closed-back construction and repairability/durability. They also have amazing soundstage for a closed-back pair of headphones and subjectively they are quite fun to listen to. It's a purpose-built tool for ensuring your recordings won't suck in some way, but they are very far from a "neutral" sound versus the AKGs. This is the equivalent of getting what a cinematographer would see on their camera's monitor as they are shooting a scene for a movie. K361/K371 are headphones are designed to replicate the environment of a sound engineer listening to a perfectly flat set of reference speakers in an appropriately sound-treated room in something you can put on your head. This is called the Harman tuning, and the idea is that the set will be reproducing the exact proportion of sounds that the person making the final version of the song heard out of their big fancy speakers in a big fancy room. This is the only guarantee you're getting: if a certain frequency is perceived at a certain loudness by the engineer, it will be perceived at the same loudness on these as well. You will get the exact same level of bass, mids, and highs. However, they don't necessarily replicate the technical nuances of a pair of speakers, such as soundstage, particularly well, neither are they especially durable or repairable. That's how you can get a headphone be this neutral for this cheap, they will lack in areas other than amazingly close adherence to Harman. Think turning your TV to "ISF Expert" or "Moviemaker" mode -- it's a good (and arguably essential) first start so your colors are not all messed up, but they'll not make your home TV suddenly be an adequate substitute for going to see a movie in a theater. I personally have a pair of AirPods Pro 2s which are actually quite robust in terms of a "neutral" listening experience, so I much prefer to have a set with the tuning and characteristics of the DT770s as a "fun" pair, as there's very little that the AKGs excel at that the AirPods also don't do a pretty good job at. If you have no "neutral-sounding" headphones in your collection already, I'd probably pick the K361, or preferably try both of them out and see which one you like more.

@PartyMusic775

250ohm is better on DT770 Pro. Love DMS but he got a bad test unit or didn't do due diligence testing it long enough. These headphones require what some people call "burn-in", or more accurately, getting used to. Only because so many other headphones MISS on a different kind of "harman target" or color that these have achieved. In spite of being "V-shaped" it's a different kind of V from what you think that means -- it's almost like it's photoshop cleaning up a dull raw photo with contrast processing. It seems to somehow correct for all the most common problems in recorded music. When you get familiar with this new "DT target" instead of the Harman target, you actually find it to be quite neutral and working well in all genres. Then it's nearly a perfect headphone and not as thin/cold as you might think. Even so, all headphones have to have some kinda double edge sword and if it doesn't shine as well as best-in-class 10-out-of-10 competitors in any area, it's probably mid-range warmth, "tonal soul", and highs being slightly "flat papery" compared to best-in-class in those 3 areas. But not bad, it's 7/10 in these areas. So you're not ANNOYED. Compared to other headphones that may be best-in-class in these areas but on some recordings sound "compressed", or "bloated", or "undetailed", or just off in some kinda way. I like that they're good for rock, metal, jazz, classical, gaming, like wow! What's even more amazing are the DT 770 Pro's for giving all the comfort, space, sound stage, lack of claustrophobia, that you just can't get on closed back usually. It's not a joke to say it's hitting in the "average" rank among open-backed headphones in the price range. Closed back are usually decidedly worse in these qualities. So if you get only one closed-back for those times you need isolation from others (or isolate them from you), I can seriously recommend the DT 770 Pro.

Is the 1990 a worthy upgrade sound wise over the 600 ohm 990? You seem to like Beyer stuff (me too) and I see a lot of potential with their stuff with the addition of EQ modifications. The 990 (600 ohm) already sounds like an HD800 (sharper but with some notable improvements like more natural imaging) to me with some EQ. You might want to try doing the 'dust cap' removal mod first, since Beyers usually sound like trash with almost all other pads. Basically, open up the headphone and pop off the dust caps from the backs of both drivers. This will open up the bass a bit more.

@@djsoulfilter Nope. The foam insert that goes infront of the driver actually attenuates treble and makes the bass louder - you definitely don't want to remove that. Then, at the back of the driver there is a cap that might be glued to the back of the driver.... but it's like hot glue, so the seal is easily broken. In my experience, both the 770 and the 990 (both in the 250 ohms variants) can be redeemed on a good tube amp (more power on the sub-bass and tamed treble). Considering the price of these sets, it is just crazy value (if you already have a tube amp that is)! And that would be the main advantage of the 250 ohms variants, since 80 ohms is too low impedance for tube amplification.

@IOSam
@IOSam 2 жыл бұрын
@@ExtremelyTastyBread This is an EXTREMELLY technical (and thus super touchy subject within the audiophile community these days), so I'll tread lightly here and recommend that, if you really want to understand the nitty-gritty behind the "impedance matching" argument between amps and headphones, you should check an article by headphonesty titled "Headphone Impedance Demystified: Do I Need a Headphone Amp?" (not putting link here to avoid having the comment blocked). This is a long article, but one of the best I've ever found to explain this theme. Having said that, the simplistic explanation (that can still be challenged depending on specific cases --specially with more modern headphones and amps) is that you'll get more distortion when you use a lower impedance headphone into a higher impedance source (amp). While 80 ohms is not exactly low impedance, it is still lower than what most tube amps put out (between 100 to 120 ohms). So, plugging your 80 ohms Beyer to a tube amp will not damage it, but MIGHT (extreme emphasis on "MIGHT") sound slightly more distorted, noisy and produce a lower "damping factor" ("muddy", loose, "boomy" or less precise bass) to people who happen to be more sensitive to that. The very old and still generally accepted rule is that your headphone impedance should be at least twice that of your amp (which makes a 250 or 600 ohms Beyer great matches to a 120 ohms tube amp) for optimal sound that will preserve frequency response and, thus, sound cleaner. Obviously, newer solid-state amps have super low impedance (close to zero in most designs these days), so plugging a high impedance headphone into a low impedance source/amp will not necessarily be a problem in terms of sound quality (the only downside might be lower volume). So, this impedance matching rule is much better applied to OTL tube amps than the much more prevalent solid-state IC designs we have today.

In my opinion the sound of these headphones is oldschool. If you listen to old records they sound fine but not modern music. So they are good for recording vocals or general tracking and that's it. Why a lot of studios, radio stations have them? Because they perfectly isolate sound, have clear sound representation and built like a tank - imagine hundreds of different people put them on and off every year in the studio, radio stations, they tossed back and forth. They are just a tool and an overkill for home studio, because they are very universal and at the same time too specific. I used to own the 250 ohm version - It's true that they have a very unique sound and they sound amazing, when they work... Unfortunately, for me, I remember the left cap/piece started grizzling/distorting only after a few days. I was mixing vocals and suddenly, the left side gave me this weird distorted noise. I actually read on the internet that it happens many times with the DT models, people suggested to take the headphones apart and mess around with them but my fix was to pack the headphones in its original box and return them for a refund. Maybe others won't be so unlucky but if I can recommend a pair of headphones, go for the MDR-7506.

I used the 250-ohm version for a few days before I switched to the 80-ohm version the next day, and I disliked the 250-ohm version and really liked the 80-ohm version. After a week of using only the 80-ohm version, I switched back to the 250-ohm version, and I heard no differences except that the 250-ohm version's stereo image was a little more to the right of center, while the 80-ohm versions' stereo image was a little more to the left of center. Delete this video and make a new one when you've compared the versions side-by-side, when they have brand new pads, and when you have given yourself enough time for mental burn-in.

250ohm will give you more highs overall and more details on highs. Which is very annoying for daily listening. But can be very useful for monitoring purposes. By the way, I have same impressions of dt770 80ohm. It's decent on low to mid volume. Just awesome. In mid to high volume sub bass become uplifted and a bit boomy. I hate the boosted sub/dipped mid lows and mid highs and boosted high’s. Very v-shaped indeed, I prefer the 880 pro over the 770 250 ohm. The 80 ohm might be a bit better than the 250 ohm, have no experience with the 80 ohm myself.

Generally you could say that higher impedance phones deliver better quality, BUT, you need an amplifier with certain specs to drive them properly. The output should have a low enough impedance and plenty of power to drive the high impedence phones. For instance a nice 250 Ohm headphone is wasted on a cellphone. So I'm sorry but your take on low vs high impedance phones is just faulty. Plenty of explanations on that subject in detail here on youTube.

V shaped? Not neutral! The sound profile and frequency response is very flat. What makes you think the bass and treble is boosted? It's deffinetly not, well a little bit on the treble I guess!:) On rtings review, these headphones are on the top list for neutral sound with a 8.3 score. The bass have a 9.3 score, mids are nearly perfect with a score of 9.5, treble on the other hand is a score of 7.5. Now this is review for the 250 ohm, but the 80 ohm should have the same sound profile and all, also the treble is better on the 80 ohms aswell! Detail is awesome, in cold war when playing with these headphones I can hear a guy shooting with a suppressor far away and hear where it's coming from. Also the sound stage is really good to, it's the best soundstage on any closed back design I have tried. Btw: Maybe you didn't burn them in? because in my experience i had to use them for about a month before they sounded right. Or maybe you used a vshaped amplifier? The sound consistency is not as good and the bass can be a bit V shaped with glasses and different pads can affect the sound to! Either way these headphones are not V shaped! Well on the treble yes.
@DMS3TV
@DMS3TV 3 жыл бұрын
They’re VERY used and very burned in. They’re also definitely V-shaped. That’s what they’re known for is boosted bass and treble. Measurements back it up. They still sound good, that’s just what’s their sound profile is.

Btw: Can you send a link to the actual sound profile, so I can see for myself how v shaped they are? Because rtings shows a sound profile that's far from V shaped! And if they are heavily V shaped, then why does rtings rate them so high? (because they only measure how neuteral sounding headphones are.)

@@metal571 Yeah your right:) The rtings measurements are confusing, Atleast to me! Just brought a pair of dt880 600 ohm and an amp and dac btw. And these just blows my 770's out of the water! The 880's sound so much cleaner and clearer, the 770's sound muffled in comparison. (And much less open.) Btw: Lots of people say that the 880's sound muddy and are heavy distorted, and when looking at measurements this seem to be correct, but I haven't heard any distortion at all! And I even use the xbass on my zen dac, why is this the case? (Just a bit confusing, do some amps changes the measurements?) I use a lake people g103p and zen dac v2 with xlr to RCA cable. And I do get distortion actually when having my dac volume knob to max and controlling volume with the amp, so I have to to the other way by doing amp max and controlling volume with my dac.
