If you mention Matt Mercer three times, Szorloc appears and turns your character into a wight. "That's what Mercer would do..." If you are playing D&D when they make the logo all rainbow colored the player will need to succeed a DC15 wisdom saving throw otherwise the player's alignment will become chaotic flamboyant, like He-man. You're not really certain, but the fabulous signs are definitely there. I'm not really sure what to do against hundreds of goblins. Even in Lord of the Rings they ran, then the Balrog showed up. I guess the moral of the story is that there's no escaping a no-win situation.

I've only used the Matt Mercer Effect once, and that was to argue the RAW of Tiny Hut and the fact that Geladon the White Dragon couldn't break it. That said, remember to ask and not demand. This isn't Matt's table, its theirs after all. And even Matt would respect a ruling at a table as a player, lets face it, just like he did for Aabria and Brennan.

For the third story, that really felt like a catch 22, which is something you should really avoid doing as a DM. Like the DM had one particular story in mind and it HAD to go that exact way and if it didn't, he'll just flex his 'godpowers' on them. One of the cardinal rules of DMing: The party will almost never do what you want them to do. Most will follow the rough storybeats you lay before them, but how they approach your story elements is entirely for them to decide. I've had players who completely halt in their tracks the second a new element is introduced to the story and have a 10 min out of character discussion about the potential impact and ramifications of that new element and how to best approach it before moving on with the game. Evey single time. Got a bit frustrating, because rolling with the punches is not just something a DM should have to do, but they had fun and it didn't really bother me THAT much in the grand scheme of things, so I let them play that way. Players are gonna play their own way and do their own things and more often than not, those are going to be things you didn't see coming. That's why I, personally, only create the event, the required NPC's and then improvise from there on, based on the party's approach to the situation. Because you can't force the party to do 'your thing' only and while I do have some general direction and try to steer the group the correct way, in the end, their decisions are what counts and decide how the story will proceed and how I should adapt to the changes in the future. 'They didn't do the thing I wanted them to do, so I'll punish them' is a line of thought that every DM should avoid. Never punish your players for making a logical choice based on the information they have. As a DM, you know everything, but as players, they're working with much more limited information, which will often lead to decisions that aren't optimal. But it is still their decisions and you should respect that and mold the rest of the story according their choices.

Improvising is an important GM skill and should be emphasized amd explained more in GM guide books. I literally had a GM once tell me that he has a story to tell and the players are just in the way of that, they were just actors I'm his play.

"then go join Matt Mercer's table." I had a player who also constantly argued. Even when I changed my ruling and allowed whatever it was, the player continued to argue. And it was really a minor issue. I finally said "no, no, lets grind the game to a halt during combat to clarify this bc clearly it's important." I think it embarrassed him, bc the player finished that session quiet and then didn't return.

Top be fair, I wouldn't bother with the minutia of salt water or fresh water either. If they're a wereshark, they can swim in and under water, regardless of whether that water is fresh or salt or what kind of shark they transform into. Those are details I wouldn't bother with.

Last time I DMed I had someone pull the old "I'm not gonna argue, but can we use flanking rules?" I say no because since they've changed how attacks of opportunities are triggered it wouldn't be suitable, cue the guy arguing for an hour and refusing to take no as an answer, then on the day repeatedly trying to flank literally every turn.

Forced TPK Story. Kings don't call on low level groups because the King has heard of them. The King calls on them because they are expendable. Honestly this should have been a job given to the party by some Sage or Merchant who was hiring what ever expendable muscle was at hand. Of course players being players, they would probably have stolen something to get them locked up. At that point the Count, Duke, or King could have a job they need done and raided the jail for volun-tolds. Had a knight with guards escort them to the dungeon and tell them don't come out without the treasure. But I usually put other ways in and out of a dungeon (especially larger ones), so the party could have a chance at giving the guards the slip. And setting up a long running plot hook of them being wanted criminals. Then having various people and employers discovering this and using that knowledge to their advantage against the party.

The moral of the first story is to put your foot down and learn how to use the line, "On the spot this is the ruling I'm making to get the game moving forward. We can talk in detail before the next session and I'll make a final ruling." That said, I don't think allowing a small race to become medium when using a class feature requires that the DM allow a medium race to become large if they use the same power.

As someone who is actually playing an Order of the Lycan Blood Hunter in my Strahd campaign, yeah thats not how it works. Unlike that guy, I successfully buttered up my dm to change my hybrid transformation because I had a proper discussion and explanation for it. For those curious I am playing a Wolfborn, in lore they are the civilized, more anthropomorphic descendants. With the blood hunter being flavored as her clan being able to tap into their latent lycan ancestry. Well she actually contracted lycanthropy, not a huge deal because we were headed towards a church that can remove curses anyway. Unfortunately a party membered died on the way, the church said that they can remove the curses and revive our party member but everything comes with a price thats neither money nor material objects. Out of character I was really curious about what lycanthropy would do to my character so in character she sacrificed her voice to revive our party member with no other payment to give for themselves. Me and the dm have been working together to make this into a fun double edged sword so its still a curse but has a benefit that makes sense with her already being all wolfy and used to transforming.

Yeah, I've found DMs always appreciate being asked ahead of time or out of game these sort of things. It shows to them that not only do you value everyone's time at the table, you also want to give them the space to figure out if the thing you want to do is balanced enough for the game or fair to the other players. I see it as less buttering them up and more as common courtesy.

Get well soon Doge! Ooof to the first OP, having both a CoS AND Matt Mercer effect horror story combined into one. Funny enough, I also had a player who assumed they could use a Longbow (heavy weapon) as a small creature (halfling) like normal. Turns out he reminded me by accident he'd be doing so with disadvantage and he was like "Ahhh dang" but accepted a soft-swap for a short bow instead of making a stink about it. If someone told me "Well Matt Mercer runs it this way" They can either "enjoy the game how -I- run it or run their own game and copy Matt themselves." Some things I do enjoy (The "How do you wanna do this" thing is actually quite popular at our table, the players enjoy having agency of how to kill enemies and how to handle the end of fights). But telling me I HAVE to do it because someone else is doing it that way is dumb. Matt himself even said he doesn't like the idea of DMs copying him in favor of doing it their own way so... yeah.

Hoping your health improves. Story #1 - I've never even seen 'Critical Role'. Starting to feel that any RPG I run in the future should be prefaced with "I Am NOT Matt Mercer". This specific Player should have been given just two options - leave OR argue it outside of the game. That's all. Story #2 - Yikes. Clearly, he had issues. Rather than blaming others for whatever happened (or didn't happen), this guy needed to face up to things. Story #3 - This sucked. So, the Players should have stayed and gotten themselves slaughtered? And just WHY was the King's mother hanging around dungeons out in the middle of nowhere?

Story 2: Not the OP fault His "friend" went full on "closet gay Incel" on him and like the "worse cases of Closet" blamed him (the object of affection) for shit that was none of his fault (the classic "it's your fault for TEMPTING me!" Because taking the easy way out to major big problems reigns supreme! (I hate it more when these's cowards THEN proceed to play the "you can do or be anything you want to" before and/or AFTER saying shit like "well you must have done something to cause the problem!" which goes to show they just love "saying anything that SOUNDS nice and make them look self-important! Hell she liked me over his "other friends" he was making who were associates of his cousin! Who was my LONGEST running Bully since I had the misfortune of meeting HIM at the same time in 3rd Grade (He was my FIRST bully as I never even knew what that concept was till then, he was the same age as my "Friend" and frankly he was the family FUCK UP and for the longest time till I learned better, my first encounter with an Albino person as other then my aunt and cousins who are VERY light skin Black, inherited from my grandmother who was Cherokee Indian! My Grandfather was black! I never knew a black persons skin could get THAT white! I made Albino friends later! But that Jackass will ALWAYS be the one I will never have good words towards! When I say LONGEST running Bully! I mean the jackass ALWAYS got passed to the next grade with me despite failing HARD on purpose instead of being left back somehow! He somehow ALWAYS found himself in EVERY SCHOOL I WENT TO! From Middle School ALL THE WAY TO HIGH SCHOOL! Luckly High School was the last time I ever saw of him! Found out at 25, he was killed in a Gang War he willingly was apart of. Still have nothing to say nice about him other then RIP Asshole! That "Friend" though suffered for associating with his cousin and his cousin's friends who also were gang members as he got shot and is now wheel chair bound! I do feel bad cause my last thing to say to him before that cut off was his "friends" were going to led him to ruination and I hope throwing me under the bus for them was worth it! The last part was me making peace with the fact he was a "Bad friend" at 17 So yeah, it's sad a 20 year friendship tanked, but that will NEVER be on the OP and I hope he understands that! To add I consider Incel a title that applies to EVERYONE no matter their gender! So Femcel annoys me cause it sounds like ONLY MEN CAN BE INCELS so we have to say Femcel to give them their own word! The description of Incel is "Someone that desires sex, but can't get it because the one or gender they desire it from refuses to give it to them or doesn't want to, or in OP case completely unaware! So they become resentful and bitter over being denied and choose to blame the Object of their desire, or the gender/race their apart of for why they can't get what they feel their OWED!" So basically it is not something MALE ONLY! Just "Bullshit artists of the highest caliber" trying to make it that so they have a new shame title to label people (seeing how "calling someone Gay in an insulting shaming manner" is starting to lose it's effectiveness as a shame title and of course now falls under "hate speech" so they have to move on to NEW words the laws they helped push to MAKE the former ban-able speech will not apply to! Bullshit is a human trait that will sadly NEVER DIE in BS the very laws they push forward)
