That’s a horrible thing to say. Why on Earth would sexual violence be okay if it happened to a guy? No human being, regardless of gender, deserves to be put through something as horrible as that. The fact that someone can rationalise that one demographic of people would be fine being put through that is- Sasha should count her lucky stars that I wasn’t at that table, otherwise she would’ve had to catch these hands.

That last one is a perfect example of what I like to call the "sometimes" rule. Basically, it goes: "Sometimes, you just have to do something that would normally be a bad idea in order to effectively fix a problem." So, in this case, "Sometimes, you just have to tell the problem player to shut the fuck up."

Now I'm just remembering one group I was in where most of the players were 16 (DM and I were teaching them how to play), and their reaction to a big payout was "let's all go to the bank... and OPEN UP ACCOUNTS!" with all the tone and enthusiasm of a bunch of 20 somethings going clubbing (someone even imitated an air horn). I was laughing so hard my sides ached for the rest of the weekend. They were delightful players, I hope they're all doing well.

First story: I feel like this could have been solved before it even happened. In my campaign, I told my players in session zero that I didn’t allow PVP, and they haven’t tried to betray each other even once. Communication works! Second story: I’ve seen less than one episode of Critical Role, and even I know that’s not what Jester would do. Third story: Julia has clearly never been anywhere near a high school if she thinks teenagers don’t swear. She also doesn’t know very many adults if she thinks they never get attached to sentimental objects or make bad financial decisions. You know what? I think everyone should just cut Julia some slack, because this is clearly her first time interacting with real people.
@asioca1992

1st Story: Imagine trying to betray your allies in the middle of an active warzone and then being surprised when the guy you tried to betray turns the tables on you. Some people are truly their own worst enemy, shame the campaign ended but I guess it was also for the best. 2nd Story: I feel sorry for the GM, especially if this group's b.s. caused them to end the campaign prematurely. These types of fans are the type that gives the source material they're obsessed with a bad name. 3rd Story: Nothing worse than dealing with someone who gets offended on your behalf, especially when you ask them politely to stop. I also love it when people try to tell you how to play your character too, that's always the greatest stuff ever. I'm glad for OP that she decided to leave and that the game improved after she left the table behind.

That last story is tough, I don't think the adult should be talking down to or belittling the 16 year old, but I personally feel that it is probably not appropriate to be making sexual jokes around a minor no matter how mature they are. With the 16 year old, I've learned that individual levels of maturity can be on extreme ends of the scale or anywhere in between. Some have kiddie levels of understanding of sexual things and clutch their pearls at swearing, or be the worst perves who can teach their parents a thing or two and make up new swear words when the old ones aren't enough. And you can mix and match everything in between. It's possible that one woman was used to the "nicer/cleaner" side of the scale (or probably a graph with that many variables) and didn't interact enough with other teenagers to realize that's not always the norm.

Critical Role: There's a huge difference between passively consuming something and being a part of trying to make something like it. The actual thing requires a lot of talented people to produce. This is true of Critical Role as well as films, tv shows, and even comic books. Characters in novels are a bit easier because you're already using your imagination but any source with a visual element may not be as fun to recreate as it is to just watch or read. And that's about your whole table, it's not just your DM's responsibility to provide that experience. Even Mercer doesn't do that alone so you can't expect your DM to pull it off.

Lucky is so cute today. So, last week the party I play in was fighting some kind of angel/demon/something that we couldn't possibly beat - so I guess that counts as a boss fight - and our wizard throws a sleep spell on my barbarian (to be fair, I had started the fight once negotiations had reached the point where the angel had thrice said he was going to kill us, but he wanted to keep negotiating). The spell failed. Then he cast hypnotic gaze on the other barbarian in the party and held her out of combat until the DM deus exed a break in the action so we could escape. My character doesn't have the deceptive skills to do what this OP did, so I just attacked the wizard, but it was a large battle field so I didn't really get close enough to get a good hit on him. I understand the wizard's IC reason for doing that and, aside from being tactically stupid, it wasn't unreasonable... but I don't understand why the player did it, lol. He's not a bad player. We're actually all experienced and mature. Not a horror story - we're all just playing our characters as we should and everyone's OK with that. But I am wondering how this will shake out in the next session. We have two barbarians who don't trust this wizard and I doubt he's learned his lesson (cause that's his character flaw, lol).

When players try to recreate characters... I have NEVER seen it done right. I once played with some guy who decided "I'm Bayonetta from Bayonetta" (the videogame) and insisted to the DM he could strap wands to his shoes and so on. His attempt at being Bayonetta was just to do a whiny bratty "valley girl" voice, while insulting everybody over everything. Hell, the time I saved his character from a swarm of ghosts that were literally 1 turn away from killing her, he started the valley girl talk about "oh ma gawd, I so can't believe you even touched me? I like was gonna beat all those ghosts, only a fucking moron idiot dumbass retard would pull me away?".

Dude. He took away Bayonetta’s British accent? Wtf? Also. I think he’s confused. Bayonetta doesn’t just insult people. From the gameplay I’ve seen, she likes cracking a few jokes at her enemy’s expense before kicking their ass. And even then, that’s not her only personality trait. She’s confident, has compassion, and while she is snarky, she knows when to take things seriously. I don’t think this guy actually played the games or even watched clips of the cutscenes online, if he managed to not even get her accent right.

for the second story I feel really bad for the gm who had to deal with that as a fan of critical role myself m(mostly campaign 2 the first one I had some interest it and the third my interest comes and goes) it sounds like they just wanted to play in a critical role fan game with ester eggs and references instead of a real dnd game. that being said if they called me lame for not watching a certain dnd show or podcast, and constantly droning on about another game I would of just told them if they would rather play in a game like that they can find a new table or they could just take turns gaming between them and run a game just for them. but I'm not going to take time out of life to run a game if they don't seem that interested. and would rather just do a carbon copy of critical role. also as for jester grabbing a guy by the jewls that's not in the show. at most she just blackmailed a person or two and at least one of them was kind of an A hole who frankly probably deserved it. also if they can't respect ground rules like that of "no sexual violence of any kind" I'd of just pulled the plug on the campaign then and there/

I think that if it's a bunch of adults playing with a minor, then sexual themes should be off the table. And any sexual jokes should be vague or more innuendo, or in game, keep it to plot-relevant fade-to-blacks. But swearing? 10 year olds swear dude like of course u can swear around a teen. And talk about important and heavier topics. Include trauma and gore and shit in the game if they're ok with that. Imo the only thing that should be censored is overtly sexual content, *because* it's a bunch of adults and a teen, so there's a power imbalance and if the teen is uncomfortable they may have a harder time speaking up about it.

Like i can understand how frustrating the last story must be for the OP as she was very condescending, HOWEVER! As a grown ass woman, if i was in a game with someone underage and they started to make sexual jokes, it would 100% make me uncomfortable. Yes i was a teenager once and said and did many things i shouldn't have, but it was with people in my same age group. I wouldn't go up to someone twice my age and think its okay to share sexual jokes with them. In this day and age, an underage person can get an adult into A LOT of trouble with "innocent" sexual joking. Intentional or not, in the eyes of the law, that adult will be held responsible. I think if you plan on running a game with someone underage, and the rest of you are adults, ide HOPE that the adults have enough common sense to not allow someone underage ( no matter how mature they present ) to engage in any kind of sexual behavior beyond what can be considered rated PG-13 in the movies.

I can understand feeling uncomfortable covering certain topics around minors because WHEN it gets back to the parents, who will they scream and cuss out? I mean, the elder lady was uncomfortable with a 16 year old cursing is not a foul on her. If anyone is using too course of language, it is appropriate to tone it down. It I just impolite to talk certain ways, even if it is your normal speech. That just seemed like the op wanted to just be able to be rude in game without consequence. As far as "that is not how adults act," kind of thing, it just seemed like she was trying to ask them to tone down irratic behavior in a polite way. Reminds me of my grandma who would use it as a stand in for "quit acting like a $#@&." Every 16 year old thinks they are mature for their age, but the mockery of adulthood is often off-putting for some. The lady in this story might have just been uncomfortable playing with someone such as that.

If anyone of any age believes that a certain arbitrary list of words cannot be used in their presence, that is most certainly a mark against their moral character and intellect.

@@SIS3W3N anyone is allowed to say, " that is rude, do not do that around me, please," for any reason. That is just being polite. It would be impolite of me to call you by a name you disliked, for instance. You getting mad at me for doing it is not you being too dumb to understand my speech so much as me being rude. The cursing here is appearantly not how op normally talks because the original post contains no swearing. Had to judge if it is offensive or just annoying because op can appearantly stop when they want too, but refuse to for another player.

@@rynowatcher If ones ideas about what is or is not rude are rooted in class prejudice, like the childishly absurd notion of "swearing" then I am allowed to think less of them and those who taught them said absurd notion, and I am most certainly allowed to disassociate myself from them.

@@SIS3W3N I think it is unfair to assume it is rooted in class prejudice and there is nothing to indicate that. The elder in the story seems to have a problem with the speech from someone of the age group, not op's class. Sure, you can choose to associate with whomever you wish, but that I'd not what is happening here. OP did not leave the group, but they did drive the other lady away with offensive behavior.. This is the same issue of a 16 year old trying to introduce sexual content in a game and an adult not being ok with that because it makes them uncomfortable and asking them to stop. OP is the "that guy" that is making another player uncomfortable with a behavior, refusing to compromise, and driving them away because they will not stop, as I see it. It does not really matter if it is cursing, being overly sexual, murdering npc's, or randomly breaking into song; if you are annoying another player and double down on the behavior when they say it is making you uncomfortable, you are being rude.

@@rynowatcher It's not unfair. It's historical fact. The concept of base/coarse/vulgar language comes from class prejudice. If someone tells me to stop using the language of the common soldier/sailor, the construction worker, and the pleb, then they are a bigot and I owe them no consideration. I can understand the older person in the story no being comfortable sharing sexual jokes with a teenager of the opposite gender. It would probably make me feel creepy. Unlike her, I would excuse myself from the game instead of trying to control the behavior of others. Regardless, that is a separate issue from my contempt for those who engage in class bigotry, knowingly or otherwise.

@@SIS3W3N something being a historical truth like the corruption that comes with power doesn’t make it an interesting storytelling device. It seemed to me that the OP thought that was an interesting twist in their world. I’m saying that we’ve seen that so much that it’s the norm, not a twist.

@@Sussy_Bottom_Boys You know what? I'll give you that one. The way OP worded it they seem to think that a theocracy being militant and xenophobic was some kind of reveal, and I think a lot of people would have assumed that was the case from the beginning. Actually, in the series of novels I'm reading right now, the "Church of Purity" is working with the Big Bad in book two, and the somewhat genre-savvy protagonist sees it coming from early in book one when he meets a member of that church for the first time.
