Yelling at a new player for not knowing how to play is rude. Yelling at a new player *who is paying you to DM for them* is the definition of unprofessional.

If you want toplay Curse of Strahd unspoiled that badly, you should probably hold out for a DM that's not complete trash. It's not like Curse of Steahd is an obscure or unpopular module, anyway.

Yup, it's one of the easiest modules to find a group for.

Not only is it popular, it's not uncommon to find a CoS game that isn't at all 100% by the book, but takes in consideration all lore about Barovia and Strahd. Turns the timeline from a few hundred years to about roughly 700.

Here's something I remember years ago when I had just passed my driver's test and only had my full licence for a year or so. It was a sticker that read (or words to the effect of) "please be patient with me. You were a learner once" with red L plates as the BG, red L plates being required by law her if you are learning to drive and have a learners licence. Yes teaching new players how thing works can be frustrating but let's not forget we were all a learner, new player, noob etc at game or other things....Also please give learner drivers/riders time and space. They don't need you stressing them out on top of everything else.

when DMs are petty and decide to do nasty things to someone's character, just because they retained the sheet after the players leave and then tell the player about it, or let it get back to the player, the player response should be as follows. "You're not doing anything to MY character. You are doing it to YOUR NPCs... and no matter how much you want to think you are hurting me, you are just making yourself look like an ass, by trying to torture a character that has no player. Says a whole lot about you my friend." And then walk away.

He wasn't a bad DM per se, but my group during lockdowns had a married couple each running their own game. The husband had the most bizarre luck with his rolls that it caused trust issues at the table. The frequency of his Nat 20s prompted us to ask him to remove the DM Screen. He wasn't lying about his rolls. We thought his dice were rigged, so he let us roll them. Again no evident cheating. It soured the mood that the owlbear encounter included it landing 5 critical hits in a row. The games were overall fun, but i went through 7 different characters in his one campaign.

Ok. You convinced me. More cats in my videos. Starblazer. Nice. Space Battleship Yamato fan myself. M31. Warhammer Horus Heresy. Nice. But that story, yikes. That 4th story; da heck DM? Sounded like he wanted a Short Circuit scenario top layout and wanted someone to play this character. Why not make it a NPC for the party to protect?

My son, Josef and a couple of his friends want to play a game. They are completely new. I've played, but have been out of the game for years. This could be interesting. Of course, I have have to be DM, but I'm cool with that. There is so many materials and lore available now, that I won't have to build an entire campaign from scratch.
@blesper34152 жыл бұрын
For the last story, if that is what the rest of the players were wanting to do than that's fine as long as op was clearly told what sort of game and characters would be allowed. I'm hesitant to say it's all the dm's fault without more context as I've seen several games where a player keeps pitching ideas outside of what character creation rules are agreed upon and wont stop until he is kicked or the dm caves to his whim. Which can alienate the other players.

Some of these people are waaaaaaay too nice. Like if the DM is being manipulative, shoots down character ideas, or just generally tries to control every aspect of the narrative without giving any players wiggle room, etc.. I'll just tell them "thanks for wasting my time" and "I'll look elsewhere so I can actually have fun". If they cop an attitude laugh at them and tell them to have a nice life and fucking block them. Stop being so nice to assholes who don't deserve it.

To clarify in the Star Wars game: NO YOU ABSOLUTELY DIDN'T NEED TO JUST SIT THERE! Get up, tell the DM he's a disgusting, creepy piece of shit and leave with your friend! Unless you are held at gunpoint or chained to the table then get up and leave! It's a make believe game for Gods sake!
@Shalakor2 жыл бұрын
Like, with that last story, I could even understand not including it in the soliciting post, if you just state up front in the private conversation that you have a specific character concept that you want a new player to run as a PC. Would make sense if the DM isn't confident the existing players won't see the post, and just let's the respondents that had their heart set on playing one of their own character concepts bow out quickly and easily. Cause, there are players that are perfectly on board with conspiring with an idea the DM presented whole cloth, too, so there's a valid space for that in the hobby. ...Maybe not that DM's, since they were so set on strongarming the issue. Still, at least that story was less depressing than the rest.

1st story: something else was wrong here. You did the right thing in leaving, and trying hard before hand but Rose was just being malignet. People have different playstylea, and sometimes they do not mesh. Even in a Souls or Souls Like game, there is an opportunity to improve and learn and get better that comes with the difficulty. This was just oppressive with no hope. There is a reason we do not play like 1st eddition where PCs had the shelf life of a Star Trek Red Shirt 2nd story: Curse of Strahd...soo muc horror story...so little do it right. They are newbies. They will be asking questions every second like a 5 year old because this is new and intimidating and having the authority figure (DM) haveing tantrums every time they open their mouth is just bad taste. O am on the Spectrum and frankly DM makes me sound like i have it togeather more times than not. Glad he was willing to listen to feed back. 3rd story: narissism. I lived with one and it was a nightmare. The railroading, in both cases, with rape was just awful. That is restraining order level creep. 4th story: yeah, no one likes backseat playing their chsrecter anymore than a DM likes backseat DMing
