In today's episode of Dungeons and Dragons Horror Stories, we have a tale of an adult My Little Pony fan (Brony) that acts like a cringy incel towards a player's wife, a story of a cleric that has a questionable backstory and goals, and a tale of a first time player of TTRPGs that is treated like crap, after one night with the player's handbook.
Gameplay: Elden Ring
Music: Medieval Tavern Music and Nowhere Land by Alexander Nakarada

As a non-creepy, or at least less creepy, brony, let me say that the Fluttershy comparisons were awful. Fluttershy has a lot of social anxiety, true, but she also has a series-long arc about overcoming those social anxieties and becoming more confident. This creep is saying he liked her better when she was meek and weak, likely because he feels like he could control her better in that state. If you try to keep your loved one from improving themself just because you liked them better before, you're selfish at best and a controlling creep at worst. The third story sounds like the DM was newbie-crushing, bullying and shaming the newcomers just so they can feel like a big man. It's not just mean, it's foolish, since it drives people away from a hobby they might have otherwise enjoyed, and it's not going to survive if it prevents new people from joining.

Loving someone and helping them through social anxiety or some other mental illness/ neurodivergency is a beautiful thing. Loving someone BECAUSE they have mental illness or neurodivergency like that Nice Guy™ is fetishization at best and a big red flag for abuse at worst. As a woman with autism, ADHD, GAD and depression I have unfortunately been made acutely aware of people like that. I have definitely been festishized for "being broken" and "needing to be protected and taken care of".

If I ever compare someone to Fluttershy as a compliment, the focus would be more on Fluttershy's kindness or character growth, not the social anxiety. While her social anxiety makes her relatable to me, I don't see the social anxiety as a good thing in me or in her and seeing her overcome it gives me confidence that I can overcome it too. I'm really disappointed that creep in the first story had to ruin her for OP and their wife.

Funny thing about that MLP character (fluttershy) is that the show has her constantly acknowledge that her being overly timid, scaredy, and passive attitude is bad in the long run and have her actively try changing to be more outspoken and confident. Her friends encourage her to changes, celebrate when she does in little ways, and don't belittle her for wanting to be stronger like this guy is doing to someone he claims to respect. On top of obnoxious this guy would make a horrible boyfriend if he doesn't want to see his partner grow past their insecurities.

3:50 - Yeeeeahhh, those "troubles" were none other than the Eight Hundred Years, which began back in the 12th Century when the British began the process of conquering and ultimately enslaving the Irish people. For the next eight centuries the Irish were treated like cheap, exploitable labor, exiles in their own land, persecuted, killed, and even subjected to at least TWO extermination campaigns (the one soft genocide in an attempt to "breed" them out of existence, and then the Potato Famine of the 19th Century). That story about the brand new player who couldn't ask OOC questions breaks my heart, because that happened to my best friend in her first D&D experience. I was at college at the time and not involved, but she told me how the group wouldn't help her out or give her advice out of character, so she just spent the whole session just doing whatever and not knowing what she was doing. It has a happy ending though, a few years later I got into D&D myself and invited her to be a guest player with my current group (a super new-player-friendly group) while she was visiting me, and she learned a lot and had such a blast that she initiated putting together a group of all our high school pals 😁

LUCKY!! *scratches that belly. * First story - UGH! I _really_ despise self-proclaimed feminists who use that as an excuse to be condescending and smug. That guy wasn't "a little awkward"; he was the living definition of Schrodinger's Douchebag. Nice Guy was definitely a habitual troublemaker who probably caused other problems outside the game as well. Second story - ...yeaaahhh, that cleric should have ONLY been used as either a villain or in an evil-themed campaign exclusively. Because that is NOT the kind of character that should be played as a joke. Third story - I'd say the problem with this story is that the DM and other players forgot that they were playing a GAME, not filming a movie. But the DM retaliating against OP the way he did for something that happened IRL is an example of Player Abuse. OP should have quit the group right there. No D&D is better than Bad D&D.

Personally I think asking (Note I said ASKING) players to be quiet a moment, and pay attention, when you as GM are trying to describe something is perfectly fine. I think its horribly rude of players to chat while your GM is trying to do something important but its fine if only one players attention is needed and you need to entertain yourself while you wait.
@marcusreading3783

Actions speak louder than words, but I tend to find that when a person says 'I am a/n...' followed by something like feminist, they are usually, A, nothing of the sort, b, actually a horrible person using something that should be good as both a cudgel and a shield or c, both. The twat in the story is clearly the latter whos only claiming that to try and get his pole greased. By a married woman no less. Also, while I do agree to a degree that marriage is an outdated concept, its really up to the couple if they want to be, well, a couple or spread the love as it were. Most people arent really that interested in sharing the SO on a permanent basis though. Also, even if they were willing to branch out, a sweaty neckbeard who talks down to others probably isnt the person they'd choose. I mean, my knowledge of MLP is fairly rudimentary, but assuming hes talking about who I think he is, even I know that shes actually pretty damn tough. I'm fairly sure she managed to tame the literal embodiment of chaos in their world and make him a tea drinking contributing member of society. Thats not something a character whos easy to control does. The way I see it, it really doesnt matter what issues a person has, they are never an excuse for acting out. Sure, it explains it and might even give some leeway, especially if they are genuinely trying to be better, but if they use those issues as a shield, they get no sympathy and should be tossed. Having issues of any kind does not give you the right to act like an ass without consequences. Also, do these people really think this kind of thing wins them any affection? I know that its common in fiction and, hell, even I've used it on occasion, usually to poke fun at the trope, but that works because the characters in question are in genuine danger and teh hero is, ya know, a hero and not a sweaty neckbeard with a fetish for cartoon ponies. Acting like this in DnD does nothing but infuriate the character playing a literal knight in shining armour with a big, fuckoff greatsword. Yep, I'm out. The moment someone brought something like THAT up, I'd pack up my things and leave. Thing is, for most people, I think that simply reading the book wouldnt be enough to do more than get a feel for the rules. I know when I read it, I came out of it just feeling confused, but I managed to get it with minimal fuss once I did it myself. You simply cant expect a noob to understand everything first go though, its completely unreasonable on the face of it. So this party are adults, right? OP mentioned he was recruited from work, so I assume that they are. I realize that people in their 20s arent always the bastions of maturity, but the more I hear, the more convinced I am that I'm listening to a story about a bunch of moronic teenaged incels. Seriously, what the fuck?! Yep, that guy has the maturity of a child. What kind of insecure twat decides that punishing a person in game for something they did IRL is a good idea? Its not even like it was a character OP was invested in, it was is SECOND SESSION EVER! What did he expect OP to do?!

That last story... The logic.... "Ah yes a new player who's got no idea what they're doing! And not only that it's someone I work with this is perfect! Now I shall help them create their own character, help them play and make them feel welcome right? Pffft NAH I have a better idea! I'll just bully them, try to make them feel stupid and powerless and tell them to shut up the entire time, then at work I'll gaslight them into thinking they did great only to do it again! Ohhhh I hope they tell me a joke at work so I can be extra horrible and punish them like a five year old then repeat the abusive and toxic behavior I did before! Best part is it won't just be me I'll have the rest of my yes men to do the same stuff! There's no way I'm in anyway an asshole here!" Like if you know going in you're not going to be a good and helpful DM and just an elitist toxic asshole why in the name of Tiamet would you even think of doing that to your coworker?? Like it's already scummy to do that at all but to someone you work with and will likely continue to work with and think you can get away with it? May that FDM (False Dungeon Master) and his chuckle heads all get nothing but natural 1 from now on because that was just horrible. Although I can say the OP really did take that situation to a level of pettiness that was rightfully deserved.

Clearly not a tank cleric build, and why would a cleric ever jump in front of a dwarf tank? also "m'lady" is already taken dude, why would she ever leave her husband for some rando creepo. stinks of lack of respect for women. 3rd story... pathetic DM and group, everything about it screams terrible introduction. When my group has invited people, it's usually to allow them to watch a session or two and we always offer assistance in character creation. And heck, I once had to point out when we had a new Druid join, that they (DM and player that invited her) forgot to help her prepare spells :3, so even experienced people get it wrong.

Not to be devil's advocate for the third story(i know that group was not a good group at all)... but the op probably didn't even read the rulebook. Many say 3.5 is complicated, but all it takes is a pair of days of your time to actually know every important rule(Less if you aim to only learn combat, the basic rules and your class rules): one of the first things in the 3.5e monk abilities is that Flurry of blows can be used with monk weapons(with a list of all monk weapons included) without gaining extra maluses/losing part of the feature. Apart from OP thinking that monks get maluses for using weapons, which is not true, unless it is a weapon they are not proficient in(Thing that happens to all classes, not just monks). It was a level one character, so the monk could have taken a magical monk weapon that would have allowed to overcome eventual damage resistances, improved to hit chances and depending on the weapon, could also have started with a d6 damage die instead of a d4... Group sucks, but OP didn't read the book properly.

@@DoomsdayR3sistance I'm not blaming the OP for not knowing everything, and especially since the group sucked, i understand what it feels like; i do have to say however, in that evening and following day there was enough time to at least properly read the Monk class they chose to play. An ideal group will give you a week of time before the first session, and help you during the game so that you learn even more along the way, but in general, especially when it is not an ideal group, you should put at least the effort to know well your own class and your options so that you can do your turns in combat decently quick.

More so, people have things to do, OP may have needed to go shopping for food and we don't have times that they went over on the Saturday or Sunday. So again, it's falling back to very limited time. Remember this is a game that OP has never even heard of before, the expectation from the group are 100% the issue. You never expect a new player to know how to play their character properly.

@@DoomsdayR3sistance I never expect a new player to know everything perfectly, i do however ask for who is interested, to put a little bit of effort into it. Reading and understanding a pair of paragraphs is a starting point: the first two or three features of the monk class take 1 minute, you can take more to understand it better, but it is not as if you need 15 minutes for every word; especially in the core 3.5e manuals where the mechanics are well explained and not vague. Also... are you implying that an adult who has a(probably an office) job, has a low level of comprehension? Cause if you even bend backwards to read things to your players and remind them everything every time, they'll never properly learn. Edit: The first weeks perfectly ok to do it tho. They put effort and you help them through the effort, it is called teamwork, but both parts need to do their part. In this case there was no teamwork. The group sucked, the dm sucked, the new player didn't suck, but could have done just a little bit better. It would have ended the same way cause the DM was shit, but the player could have read the book again after the first session(maybe he did with the new group, but till the second session he still thought monks get maluses for using weapons.)

If i was Op’s fiancée in that first story, I would feel incredibly hurt and betrayed if I found out they prioritized the feelings of some creep over my own comfort and safety. It’s so insanely creepy that he felt comfortable sharing that he collects porn of a character from a kid’s show, and even more so that he told Op’s wife that she reminds him of said character. Fuck Nice Guy’s feelings, what about his WIFE’s feelings? What about the feelings of the other women at the table? There’s a time and place for handling situations calmly and diplomatically- this was not one of those times. Nice Guy needed to be kicked the moment he started pestering other players with his Nice Guy act or the second he started fetishizing another person. I find that the common theme with these types of stories is that many of the bystanders just couldn’t be bothered to deal with the problem person; they’d much rather let the issue sit and fester than to have to deal with any actual confrontation.

The twisted, toxic Brony story is an example of "Everyone is the asshole here." Their method of dealing with him, descending into screaming, tying up his character and carting him about, and then murdering him while describing the "sack of heads" that their rogue was carrying about for serial killer reasons is either complete fabrication, because no one can be so foolish as to do such rather than just kicking the guy or holding an out-of-character conversations about these major issue, or an example of them all being just as psychotic.

I agree. Honestly, the story's problem player was very much a stereotype strawman, and when I see that I start thinking the OP made it all up just to spread their own bias against some fandom. Problem Nice Guys like that certainly do exist... But OP was showing a bit too much sketchiness in their side of the story. OP was presenting themselves as somewhat calm and reasonable, and then stating a resolution that was stupidly vengeful and incredibly inefficient. Like you said, it's a fabrication... or everyone in the story were different kinds of 'That Guy'.

I think bronies are cringe to start with simply because MLP is a show aimed at pre-pubescant girls. I'm not going to lecture, and if you like fake horse drama, by all means, whatever blows your hair back. I'm entitled to an opinion, it's not my thing. At first I thought you said he had porn of the dwarf character lol! Yeah, I've met some real creepos at the table, and when they think you're powerless they try to capitalize on you. My sympathy to the original poster, definitely sounds like he had to deal with a slime brain.

that last story... Honestly if that was me I would just searched up and asked around if that was how D&D was played and confront the guy with facts and evidence that he's an asshole and that I'm warning others of how he bullies new players just to spite him for wasting my time and tries to belittle me for something that was out of my control. Is it petty? maybe, but after dealing with manipulating assholes at work for near two years has pretty much jaded me to not take shit from nobody and have both people and facts backing me up to prevent crap like that I went through never happens again as I had a mental breakdown last year and was about to head for another one until I finally took matters into my hands, called the union a second time and left that toxic work environment. Doesn't help either that this is... similar how the DM snaps at OP as my former Manager at Ikea WAS SIMILAR toward me, never really got any answers to why but I have suspicious it might have something to do with getting back at my uncle as both of them never liked each other and my uncle was always able to put that bastard in his place with both facts and charisma, but with him gone and working at another company I think that sorry excuse of a human being took it out on both me and my little brother and every time we try demand what the fuck is his problem was he will ALWAYS play dumb or act like it's somehow our fault or that he's just doing his job. Thankfully we both left Ikea and working at a storage building, packing and loading up packages, driving around forklifts and actually having fun and being treated as human beings, which also helps it's in our old hometown nearby too~
