The reason the gasoline intake door is automated is to protect the user from additional pressure buildup events in hybrid systems. Because it is cap-less, there is no second protection. Hybrid systems can occasionally build up higher vapor pressures if the external pressure is higher. If you are driving a normal gasoline system, you generally reduce pressure by consuming gasoline. If there is a possibility to run on all electric for a trip, you may have higher vapor pressures in the tank that need to be dispelled before opening. You will notice that there is a delay between pressing that button and the door opening. The system is relieving potential vapor pressure.
@specialopsdave
@specialopsdave 3 жыл бұрын
There is pressure releif built into all modern fuel tanks, idk wtf you are talking about. The real reason is because locking fuel caps are incompatible with the capless system, and just anyone would be able to pour non-fuel things into your fuel tank.

I love my 2021 f150. I have a xlt 302a package and it's awesome. My only real issue is the lack of venting in the back seat. I also have a bench seat in the front and if you ask me ford could have easily put a couple vent under the console part that flips up. Other then that my truck has been flawless. I have the 2.7 ecoboost which is awesome. 27mpg on the highway and a 36 gallon tank I can go 800 miles between fill ups.

Travis~ how does your truck handle running the A/C with the engine off & how long can the AC run on pure electric power. I travel cross country a lot and like to stop at rest stops for 2 hours of sleep. A lot of states have anti idle laws so you can't run your engine. I heard the the F150 hybrid will turn the engine on and off on it's own to help the batteries recharge. Thank you~

Andre, I live in a city. In my area, having a Gas Cap that stays "locked" until released is a necessary option because (I've seen it often happened to some of my customers) where vandals aggressively put "a foreign substance," into the tank in an attempt to destroy the vehicle. Even though you don't like it, it's a feature I would prefer to have.

I love it how he starts by saying that he likes to be on the "bleeding edge" but then complains about the fuel door opener. IMO having the button in the inside of the car is better because no one can just open your fuel door and steal your gas. I know this does not happen that often but still. And I am also pretty sure that if you could open the fuel door from the outside the truck would have to be unlocked too but it is possible to forget to lock your truck

If you're worried about that, just get a lock...just as people have been doing since cars were invented. I don't want to be stranded at a gas station because I'm out of gas but I can't open my filler door because an electronic solenoid decided to take a crap. Getting your truck towed to the dealer for a repair of over-engineered stuff like this is ridiculous but it will happen. Sometimes all this fancy stuff offers some sort of benefit to offset any increased complexity or repair costs (like lane-detection, auto braking, and other fancy stuff) but in this case, it's unnecessary and offers no benefit over not having it. If they wanted to have a remote-release filler door, at least have it controlled by a cable like older Hondas were...the cable won't let you down like a solenoid will.

Good video Andre! I just took delivery on a Powerboost King Ranch a week ago, trading in my F350 dually, since I don’t need a dually any longer. I’ll admit, it’s a fantastic truck, and it drives beautifully, but the thing I’m super impressed with is the gas mileage. Granted I’ve only had it a week, but I’ve put on 600 miles and I still haven’t had to fill up yet. I’ve already charged up my son’s ATV battery, an electric golf cart, and ran a portable fridge and blower for one of those inflatable slides for my daughter’s birthday party, with no signs of trouble or slowing down. My only concern is one that you showed in the video. I’m currently looking for a transmission cooler and oil cooler for this truck, since I see this as the only pain point for this vehicle. I’m not going to be towing too much with it, as I still have my 2020 F250 Diesel for that, but I’m doing it more as a safeguard than anything else.

The reason for the gas tank having the release is due to it being a hybrid. They pressurize the tank in case gas is in there for a longer period and goes stale. It is common on other hybrids like the Fusion Hybrid, C-Max, etc. I don’t entirely agree with them on it since the truck isn’t seeing double the mileage or whatever. But since moving to WAH, my F-150 Lariat PB has only been getting filled up maybe once a month or so. I imagine for some it’s even longer. Probably doesn’t hurt. I also wouldn’t worry about the rear axle rust as much for newer orders. Mine was built in May and the axle was flawless and solid black. I suspect very early orders had axles that were maybe not stored the best while they were retooling the manufacturing plant. Ford shouldn’t have delivered them like that, but it hasn’t been seen on newer builds. I love my PB Lariat, doesn’t have the Payload of Andre’s, but it’s an amazing vehicle, and I have regularly seen 25-30 MPG on city trips and on a recent 5 hour road trip averaged just over 24 MPG. Not bad for a truck that also has 570 lb/ft of torque and that 0-60 time.

A lot of people don't realize that payload is generally the limiting factor for towing with an F150. The towing capacity assumes a full tank of gas, a 150lb driver and nothing else (no kids, cargo, snacks, added floor mats, etc.) . An 11000 lb trailer should ideally have about 1400 lb tounge weight, add in 150lb driver and you are at 1550lb of the 1700lb payload. And this is with an XL work truck without all the bells and whistles. Add in the weight of the passengers, the tongue weight of that trailer and I bet they were very close, if not over towing capacity.

3800 miles in 6 months? Shoot, still new and the nubs still on the tires! I want to absolutely love this truck - it checks nearly everything I want on my perfect truck checklist. My hesitancy is…it’s an American truck and is a Ford. It seems like the American truck industry delivers a high proportion of lemons, and reliability is #1 on my list of important vehicle attributes or features. Looking forward to your reviews when your truck has more miles and time under its belt… Thank you so much for the great videos and reviews you create and share!

I can explain the fuel door button! Unlike gas only powertrains that don't have a locking fuel door the Hybrid fuel systems are not vented (corked) during battery operation and have a RV (refueling valve) for regulatory reasons (EPA). The RV is naturally closed and only opens when it reaches a low pressure differential hence the delay in opening the fuel door. If you insert the refueling nozzle in the capless before the pressure is equalized you risk having fuel shooting out of the pipe. It's a much needed safety feature.

It's interesting to me the different options ford offers. My 21 Lariat doesn't have a locking gas cap and came with Goodyear Wranglers. I've seen many different style and brand tires on trucks around my area. I've got the 5.0 with the 36 gal fuel tank and it's crazy how effecient they are. I did a test when I was out of town, and between highway and city I was getting 17 mpg. I reset it for the final trip for just all highway and hit 21.4 mpg, which is crazy to me in a full zise truck with a V8. Ford (and probably others) needs to address that air vent problem on the 6 passenger configurations. There's no excuse to not have proper ventilation to the rear seat passengers.

Trucks are expensive. They aren’t going to get any cheaper either. A well equipped midsize truck like a Ranger, Colorado, Tacoma, etc… are all close to $40,000. Most of those get less mpg and have less than half the towing capacity of this f150 too. You would have to talk to a dealer or someone who has purchased one, but there are usually tax credits when buying a hybrid or EV as well. Sometimes it is a pretty significant refund.

The fuel door button is common on hybrids. This is because the engine does not need to be on to test the integrity of the EVAP system/ fuel tank system. Pressing the button causes the system to check the pressure and/ or vent the vacuum on the tank before opening an unfiltered air source. This ultimately prevents debris from being pulled into the tank.

I have owned mine since April, and have a little over 8K miles. To be fair a lot of the items you dislike are due to the trim package. I wish Ford let the operator have more control over the electric system, with a button or switch to shut off the engine. As it is now, you have to apply brake, and it seems like a waste of momentum to me. I also wish there was an option to just turn the engine on every time I put it in reverse, instead of the backup alarm. Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase. In future model years, I would want to see a larger battery and electric motor. I also hope they make a larger version of this design on the Super Duty.

This Line-X coating REALLY DOES WORK! It also offers extra sound proofing/deadening against road and wind noise AND is great for those state/provinces which pour on the road salts in winter! The Salt brine simply cannot penetrate those thick layers (8mm or 1/4 inch) at all even with the variable/differing expansion and contraction differences between Line-X and various grades of Steel and Aluminum. We put Line-X on SPACE VEHICLES !!! | We're a BILLION DOLLAR Aerospace company with multiple Ph.D's in Metallurgy, Materials Science and Organic and Nuclear Chemistry. I bought a 2020 RCSB and love it. I had to special order it but it was worth the wait. You're correct in that you can save a lot due to cab configuration. My old truck was an extended cab (2004 F-150) but my kids are grown and I never used the back seat anymore so when it came time for a new truck, regular cab was perfect. When I configured trucks all the same, the RC was $3,850 cheaper than the SCAB and $5,600 cheaper than the SCREW. Additionally, it's a couple hundred pounds lighter than a SCAB or SCREW so it feels pretty darn zippy.

Higher octane only means it has a higher resistance to detonation. If the engine is not running increased boost or increase compression it's not going to help with horsepower or efficiency. It's possible if the computer could run more timing because of the increased octane it could help a little bit. I think it's a myth people think high octane their engines lasting longer or something. Similar to when people spend thousands of dollars at the dealer for regular service. They get that nice feeling they're treating their car well.

Ford has had capless gas fillers for over a decade without the need for a button to open it...security hasn't been an issue. If you want security, you have to buy a lock just like it's always been...nothing has changed. I agree with Andrea...just unneeded stuff to break especially since it's electronic (versus cable operated handles like older Hondas had...at least they used a physical cable to open it versus a solenoid that could fail and then preclude you from actually opening the door) .

The fuel door release is there for a reason. All Fords hybrids use the gas door release because when driving the vehicle the fuel tank may actually become pressurized. The fuel door release button is an input to the vehicle indicating you want to fuel up and it safely releases the pressure through the EVAP charcoal canister. If it was not vented through the canister and it just vented through the filler neck a burst of fuel vapours would blow in your face when inserting the fuel nozzle. Not exactly very safe…
