Do It Yourself: How to change your smoke/carbon monoxide detector batteries

Regularly checking the batteries on your smoke detector is a must. Most of all for safety, but it's also going to prevent you from having the annoying chirping sound coming from your smoke detector when the batter gets low. Here, we show you how to do this.
Most smoke detectors run on AC power with a batter back up. The battery on most model is located on the back of the smoke detector. So you'll need to remove it from the ceiling to get access. To remove, typcially as simple as twisting it counter clockwise to remove it from the mount. Some models require you to un-plug the AC Power first. Then you can access and change out the battery. It's as simple as that. We recommend you do test it every so often to make sure it's still working and to change the battery, twice a year if needed.
Pro Tip: A good reminder of when to do this to do it when you set your clocks for Daylights Savings Time.

The irritating chirping and the voice saying "low battery" will generally start in the middle of the night. Most often it goes into "low battery warning mode" if you have a big day coming in the a.m., such as if you need to be ultra alert to drive long distance. This incessant reminder happens every 60 seconds, so no catnaps between warnings allowed! Another time the detector will give you trouble is if a fussy infant has just fallen asleep--again, in the middle of the night, after you have spent a couple of hours trying to get the little one to nod off. You can count on these units to quietly do their job when nobody is home to be irritated.

Good video I just wished u couldve shown how to take the housing off and put back on. But I had a question, ..is a hard wired unit communicating to emergency facilities or landlords at any point??

Thanks so much for your inquiry. The housing should twist off by firmly gripping the alarm and twisting to the left. While the units are hardwired throughout the home, they are not set up to send alerts to emergency facilities or landlords.

How does a common monoxide detect smoke that is invisible

I have that detector ... HATE IT. July 4th at 5am it gives me a false alarm (loud enough to wake the dead including my apt. neighbors) and it was bloody hell to get it to stop. Seems high humidity outdoor air (blowing through with a window fan) is enough to set off this damned thing. Replaced batteries per video and it still chirps every minute. Bedroom detectors using 9V batteries never have a problem.

Ok so I just went ahead and did it, you don’t need to turn the power off, just swap the batteries then press the button, it will chirp once and it will alternate between green and red lights, this is its self test so press the button once more and it will be reset and synced with the house. Depending on the exact model you have you may only need to press the button once and not twice like me
