Brown is a great story.. he went through a few tough injury. including tore his ACL. back in 2022, missed the entire season of 2023. but he battled back, put in the work.. and it's certainly paying off for him. guys like that is easy to cheer for. 😊

The Leafs could certainly use a goalie with competence no worse than the Canucks' Arturs Silovs, who this season went from having, after having last preseason (with a game during which he'd allowed multiple ugly goals and had been pulled), played in just 4 games (all of which he'd started, mostly in April) to playing in TEN playoff ones. Whether the Leafs will find that Silovs-type who, unlike Woll, can stay healthy for long stretches still remains TBD.

People gloss over the fact that Leafs in a lot of playoff series lost in g7 and sometimes 1 goal from progressing and the team they lost to either won the SC or went to the finals, saying that need a good netminder and best ability is availability, Demko is a great netminder but he wasn’t available for the Nucks! If he was maybe it’s them in the SC finals instead of Oilers, saying that Sheloves was great!

The Leafs under Tre have yet to do a deal with the Flames although also have yet to do deals with other Atlantic Division teams; indeed this season saw just 3 moves between the Leafs and divisional rivals, both via free agency: Justin Holl to the Wings early last July and signings of Tyler Bertuzzi (ex-Bruins) and Dylan Gambrell (ex-Sens). The season before that had featured a trade of Matt Murray from the Sens to Leafs.

I'd like to believe that with limited cap space the Leafs will find a goalie with at least as much competence as with the Canucks this postseason Arturs Silovs had. Whether the Leafs will find even that type of goalie, whose stamina had allowed him to play in 10 postseason games (after Thatcher Demko, then Casey DeSmith, had gone down to injuries), still remains TBD.

@@Redz1991 It remains as clear as mud just how many pending free agents GM Treliving wants to keep who he gets to keep and which ones he’d much rather let go regardless of circumstances. Hopefully Treliving will let Brodie and Samsonov walk as neither was consistently effective this season. Indeed pretty much the only untouchables are AM34 and Nylander. Martin Jones would be good to sign for a sub-US$1-million per-season cap hit for at most 2 seasons but with Joe Woll injury-prone, that means signing one, maybe two, goalies, or giving Marlie Dennis Hildeby at least 40 starts, something he may not even have the stamina to do as he has yet to take to the ice in a game at the NHL level other than maybe in preseason play. Keith Petruzzelli, who I last watched play in a January Marlies’ game that had been broadcast on TSN, gave up an ugly goal although: - that month typically features so many games, on most days, of different Canadian NHL and NBA teams in action, that I watch so few AHL games even if they happen to be on TV - Treliving has to decide whether to give that goalie a qualifying offer because this month that goalie’s contract expires, allowing the goalie, should he receive a qualifying offer, to exercise arbitration rights if he wants to do so - Petruzzelli has yet to play in an NHL non-preseason game despite having dressed for multiple ones in November 2022

He came into this year having figured it out but the team wanted to get him starts in the ahl this year allowing bob to be a horse and knight to regain confidence also elevating the value of stolarz as a good backup that could eventually be packaged for other needs or share the net with knight in the future. Situation was handled perfectly imo. Knight really started looking elite again in the AHL as the season went on and as a fan of goaltending it was all mental for knight, he has all the fundamentals down as fluidly as any other star goalie in the NHL still. I realize i typed a lot but give it another year or two & knight will be one of the leagues top goalies

Jones this season had, excluding in preseason play, a 90.2 save % via having allowed 56 goals on 574 shots, allowing on average 2.55 goals/game. Yes then-head coach Sheldon Keefe didn't use Jones in postseason play but I see trying Jones out on a not-more-than-2-season deal, with a sub-US$1-million per-season cap hit, as reasonable. Whether such a deal will happen still remains TBD although time is running out for GM Treliving to re-sign Jones. Should Tre re-sign Jones, what about Joe Woll who this season, excluding preseason play, played in almost 30 games including 3 playoff ones (the 1st of the postseason ones having been in relief of Ilya Samsonov for the 3rd period of game 4)? Woll had yet to, in ANY season, play in 20 or more non-preseason NHL games and from the 2019-20 AHL-ECHL-NHL season to 2022-23 one had played 20 or more regular-season AHL games in 2 (2019-20 and 2022-23). Maybe Woll can play 20 or so games while Jones, who played 22 NPGs this season (all regular-season ones), may be good for up to 20 or so. That still leaves over 30 games after the Leafs have played their last 2024 preseason game but before the 2025 postseason depending on how many games each Woll and Jones each start (which this season was 42 regular-season games). The Canucks' season that ended in April 2023 without a playoff appearance featured their use, at the NHL level, of: - 3 goalies who'd each started at least 15 non-preseason games (Thatcher Demko, Spencer Martin and Collin Delia having respectively started 32, 27 and 18, with Martin and Delia having each otherwise been inserted into 2 games they didn't start) - 1 (Arturs Silovs) who'd played in 5 NPGs, all of them starts Do I see the Leafs as quite possibly repeating next season what the Canucks, during their 2022-23 season, did? I see such a repeat as more likely as this season, during regular-season play, that of the Canucks (Demko, DeSmith and Silovs having respectively played 51, 29 [27 starts] and 4 games). The Leafs, during the regular season of: - 2023-24, used 3 goalies all of whom played in at least 20 games - 2022-23, used 4 goalies who weren't emergency backups, 3 of whom played in at least 10 games but only 2 (Ilya Samsonov and Matt Murray) played in at least 20 - 2021-22, used 5 goals 3 of whom played in at least 10 games (2 having played in at least 20), with Jack Campbell's 49 (47 starts) the most in any of the past 3 seasons It may be the Leafs should be prepared to, during the 2024-25 regular season, use 4 or 5 goalies with the stamina to start at least 20 games, and that may mean 1 or more callups from the Marlies of the AHL (with the Newfoundland Growlers, the Leafs' last ECHL affiliate, having folded in early-April).

Toronto can’t afford a top goaltender, but they need good or at least decent ones. The statistical difference between a 2-5 mil goalkeeper and a 6-12 mil one isn’t worth the difference in salary, even if i disagree with the contracts, Toronto was right in focusing their spending on the forward group. Woll is good, a veteran close to retirement, retired or about to retire could be a good mentor for him at extremely low cost and could surprisingly give some good hockey (Quick, Halak, Fleury, etc.). As a 3rd, some kind of journeyman that can play 2nd if need be, ideally one that can handle being temporarily #1.

I can’t think of any goalie, who at the NHL level has, following the end of Ed Belfour’s time with the team, played 4 or more seasons, with Campbell, having played, during the season of, excluding preseason games: - 2019-20, 6 games (6 regular-season [all of which he started]) - 2020-21, 29 games (22 RS, 7 postseason [all starts]) - 2021-22, 56 games (49 RS [47 starts], 7 postseason [all starts]) I can’t think of another goalie in the post-Belfour era who has lasted that long at the NHL level just yet, with Joe Woll having, excluding preseason play, played, during the season of: - 2021-22, 4 games (all regular-season starts) - 2022-23, 11 games (4 of them [2 starts] playoff ones) - 2023-24, 28 games (3 of them [2 starts] playoff ones)
