Hey guys, We noticed that there are a lot of questions and skepticism around the pricing of this procedure in the comment section. We are happy to go a little more in depth, as far as costs go, for those of you who care to see. Below is a list of approximated costs: 1. Two Piece Keyed Crank Hub Kit - $1300 2. Gaskets & Parts Needed - $496 * Valve Cover Gasket Set * Front Crank Seal - Crankshaft Seal * Bolt for Timing Chain Sprocket - Intake/Exhaust Camshaft * Cover Seal for Brake Booster Vacuum Pump * Oil Pan Gasket * Engine Oil Pan Bolt Kit (Aluminum) * Coolant / Antifreeze (Blue) (1 Gallon) * Engine Oil - 5W-30 Synthetic (7 Liters) * Oil Filter Kit 3. Labor - $2250 * Valve Cover R&R (8.2 hours BMW book time) * Oil Pan R&R (8.4 hours BMW book time) * Front Crank Seal R&R (5.6 hours BMW book time) * Drilling Crankshaft (1.5 hours approximated) * Crank Hub R&R w/ proper torquing procedure and retiming engine (1.5 hours approximated) * Total Labor Hours: 25.2 Hours (even at a VERY reasonable shop rate of $100/hr total would come out to $2520.00 for JUST labor) * Our Flat Labor Rate for the job is $2250 (approximately $270 below the hourly total at $100/hr) This procedure is an in depth procedure that is very labor intensive and for that reason costs more than expected based on looking at it on surface level. With that said, this job is only to be performed by a highly experienced BMW technician, or else irreversible damage can be caused that may lead to a full engine swap. Used S55 engines cost anywhere from $10,000-$13,000 depending on external variables and another 20-25 hours in labor for replacement. This $4,000 job is insurance for those running high power on their S55 engines against a possible engine failure than can run them upwards of $15,000-20,000. This job is suitable more for the spirited driver / power freak that is looking to drive their car like they stole it (how it should be driven). Thank you for reading :) If you have any further questions please feel free to give us a call at (800) 438-2808 or email info@SSR-Performance.com Shah @ SSR Performance Owner

Holy hell! The first generation Mazda/Ford 2.3L engines (circa 2003 to 2009 both NA and turbo) had key-less crankshafts and used similar diamond coated washers between the crank pulley, the crank gear(s), and the crankshaft. If the pulley(s) slipped the engine was out of time or damaged. Also, if the pulley bolt came loose, or if an owner unknowing removed their crankshaft pulley for some reason, their engine was then out of time. Wow BMW, just wow.

Don't worry, S58 will have another catastrophic failure. There hasn't been an M3 without catastrophic failure since E30. If it's not the engine it's the rear subframe falling off, strut towers separating etc.

I've tried to manually turn engine and it doesn't turn. Would you say it's a crankhub, timing fault? Also have open circuit fault for camshaft sensor. Any help would be great. Thanks

@williamwilson51255 жыл бұрын
I'll buy the S58 when it's available before spending 3000$ on a crank hub fix to add more hp in a chasis thats is at its limit of usable hp on stock hp levels. This upgrade is not worth it at these prices. If you remain stock the likelihood of spinning a crank is probably less than 2%. Who pays these prices to fix a fault which is the manufacturers mishap. If it spins stock than your covered under warranty. The f80 spins its tires under stock hp levels. Once hp is upgraded the car becomes a roll racer only and hard to mitigate unless your on a prepped surface or have street slicks anyways. What's the point? Your paying to overwhelm the chasis. How do I know this? I was stage 2 but removed the mods and went back to stock once the crank hub issue became more prevalent.
@BimmerM5e394 жыл бұрын
Looks like its time to stop modding my N54 or think of a S55 car and find another platform with a B58 if I want to go beyond stock turbo FBO power levels. The new S58 with AWD should be the most reliable and get the power down. I just did my N54 oilpan gasket so this is crazy to me now. AWD B58 maybe?

It happens on N54 too but less, but it's hard to know for sure why S55 is more prone. Is there more harmonic inbalance in S55? What is different with the chain and tensioner design? Who the hell knows for sure (except BMW engineers, they know). But N54 forums do have many reports of this too.

@jesusoliveros11524 жыл бұрын
KentBummerM you should be good going stage 1 since on a competition package you are getting 450 hp on a stock car. The power added with a stage 1 on a non competition should be almost the same as the competition one. The problem seems to be when u decide to go stage 2 and run e85. I think keeping it stock or just running stage 1 should be safe
@jesusoliveros11524 жыл бұрын
KentBummerM and dont forget to mention that is less likely you can blow the engine with the OEM part than the keyed one. I have seen keyed Crank hubs cracking and when it happens, it’s a 100% catastrophic failure. So if am keeping my car stock i wouldn’t worry about it or not even try to replace it since it is a lot of money for something isn’t likely to go wrong

@lbarbato64253 жыл бұрын
Do not do this, it’s BS overload, if it was a problem the OEM would have put out repair procedure through the dealers with a component which would have been R&D to work. There is no real problem but doing this will be creating what the BS says about the not true problem. BMW race these engines with no problem.

@idokwatcher20624 жыл бұрын
BMW engineers knew about this inherent weakness from the start. It's a calculated acceptable loss for them to replace some blown engines within 4 years of warranty, and others that don't damage block and head get repaired cheaper. Some percent of owners out of warranty will even opt to buy a new engine, must be great for BMW.
