This appears to me like dumb Doom community drama that spiraled out of control as things do on the internet. However, if we're talking about the industry in general. We should definitely not fall into the 'move on' or 'let go' mentality. Because that's how AAA companies like Blizzard, EA and similar get away with things they shouldn't..

Just a clarification: I experimented with the real gore sprites around 2011~2012 in a test build, but the art style didn't match the rest of the game, so I dumped these sprites. It never made up to a major release. The devs of Project Brutality used these sprites briefly in one of the early 2.0 builds, you may still find a trailer of it using these sprites, but it didn't last long. And I want to make clear that If anybody wants to call me a psycho because of it, go ahead, I really don't care about people on the internet trying to pose as paladins of good morals. Referencing or even using real gore is normal in the gaming industry as others pointed Half Life 2 using pictures of real carbonized corpses, and at least I did it myself, and didn't try to force somebody else to do it and get traumatized like the Mortal Kombat devs did. Just please, be honest and don't spread lies about me. There are no real gore sprites in Brutal Doom, and there never was unless you were active in the ZDoom forums in 2011 and played one very specific test version.

On the gore note, yes any game that uses or gore or graphic content uses real life references. Going to school for 3D Art, you're taught you need at least three or four references for anything, going on imagination doesn't make a sufficient product. Before I graduated, I did a team assignment with the programming students and we made a doom style game. For the game, I had to find references for blood, limbs, and just the way dead bodies look. I understand an argument against using the images instead of making something new, as I do find it disrespectful to the deceased, but using reference to make something original isn't new and it's standard in the industry.

These are my thoughts exactly. It's okay to use real graphic content as an inspiration in making gore effects in a video game, but it's different in my opinion when that involves using the actual gore image itself. It does feel like being disrespectful to the victim/s of said injury and what's more ominous is someone trying to find out who the person was in the image and making that a part of how people will remember them and that a game like Sad Satan is very well known for something like this being done for simply sadistic reasons and even worse things than what's simply added into this mod for Doom.

Not to say that he couldn't have been a jerk in general- it's just that most of them were big-headed. People would gossip and exaggerate situations involving the author. They did a similar thing when one forum member eventually released his own indie game- half the community freaked out, complained about the (cheap) price and held the poor guy in contempt.

I've been a small contributor for Brutal Doom around 2017 - 2018 and I can say that Mark always made sure to give proper credit to the assets used for the mod when it was around the release of Version 21, while I wasn't aware of his backstory from 2013 (which, I assume most people could appreciate his apologies later on as human beings) I never had any issues surrounding him or the drama around Project Brutality, considering this event never reached out to me nor I ever knew about it to begin with. As for the real gore reference, I can only relate this event being "discovered" just like the burned corpse from Half-Life 2 and other Triple A studios using the same/similar techniques for the more impactful visual fidelity (and I sure hope it's the only purpose and not for some sick and twisted fantasy, considering how vile and disgusting humans can go on their way of enjoyment and pleasure). Overall, I don't think Sgt. Mark IV is a sociopath and I assure that Brutal Doom's legendary impact and legacy on the community is not going away, I just hope people could stop asking for compatibilities for the mod when there's many other great projects out there that can give you as much joy that BD does in a similar fashion without milking this compatibility request ever so often. I learned to respect the more vanilla side of Doom as the years went on along with some old ZDoom classics and other amazing GZDoom mods out there, such as KDiZD, The Ultimate Torment & Torture, Stronghold: On the Edge of Chaos, ZDoom Community Project Take 2, Doomer Boards Project, Golden Souls, OSJC Major Crisis, The Space Pirate, Doom Delta, DoomRL Arsenal and so on.

From my understanding of the gore controversy, it wasn't the fact that it was gory that was controversial, but that *actual* pictures of victims were used, and thus disrespectful. Like with your Dead Space example, the devs used the imagery as inspiration/reference only. They didn't scan in actual car crash victims as the Necromorphs.

Half Life 2 used the face of a REAL burn victim for one of its dead body models. So therefore your point is moot. I will agree it's disrespectful but at the same time the person that took the picture wasn't thinking that. Then again this picture of the burn victim came from a medical journal iirc.

I’d say it’s plenty realistic too. Most people can walk away assuming they use proper aid if a bullet does little visible harm (assuming no vital organs are hit ofc). The chances drastically decrease if the injuries are a little to much more obvious, and can definitely be life-changing if it’s powerful enough. Some video games say that aiming for the limbs with a gun is a good less-lethal option. Practically any anti-materiel rifle, battle rifles, and even some powerful pistols with hollow point or other expanding ammunition (think .44 Magnum) would politely disagree, mostly due to their temporary cavities becoming much wider than the limb being shot at. And that’s BEFORE we get into the arteries located in the limbs.

The Gore in Dead Space is also unique as it serves as a core gameplay function too. Necromorphs can't be killed easily by just shooting their bodies, you have to take them apart. Otherwise, they don't stop coming at you. If Gore is added with no rhyme or reason then it kinda just feels weird. Even so much as adding Gore as an environmental detail works well as Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal did that and they came out great.

I think it’s fine to base gore off of real gore, as long as you aren’t just straight up posting the original images. I also think that you shouldn’t force artists to use or view those images. It’s a big problem in the video game development community that the art designers are either forced or pushed towards doing it and several devs have come out talking about how bad it is.

Years ago I made a weapons mod for BD v16.b, not a proper weapons wad but rather a modified version of BD itself. I sent it to Sergeant to see what he thought, and getting to the point he said I could make it available to DL. Despite the fact that I had just overwritten his work, due mainly to my own laziness, he didn't bust my balls at all. @kalaherty
@kalaherty Жыл бұрын
I find the gore-thing interesting... I've heard of numerous developers/visual artists using actual images of deaths and mutilations as reference, but I'd argue that if someone wanted to make something which is distressing or visually potent; using something unrelated to real life injury is more effective and much less unpleasant for the person producing the piece. For example: instead of using actual gore or meat for a wound, use something like a calico or hessian bag for reference, just changing the colour pallet but focusing on the texture. It mixes the associations and becomes slightly jarring. The colour matches what is expected, but the imitation of a material with a specific texture causes a tactile association. ...and you don't have to sit around looking at things that might make you sad for hours. No desecration of a persons entire life is required and I guarantee it is more effective in most cases.
@kullenberg
@kullenberg Жыл бұрын
Can you explain how a sack of coarse fabric look like gore?
@kalaherty
@kalaherty Жыл бұрын
@@kullenberg It's a bit complicated to describe without making a visual representation, but part of the point is that it's mostly not like gore, yet contextually the colours are correct, the location seems right (extruding from under the skin) but the texture is not as expected. It's visually jarring, which can cause some people to feel uncomfortable. You can probably test it out in something like Photoshop or Krita by desaturating an interesting texture and placing it over a section of a persons body and using a multiply blend. Under it, get a colour pallet based of something like a raw steak or aged watermellon slice and loosely paint the colours under it, trying to follow the pattern. Some things will work, some things won't.

I still play Brutal Doom periodically. It’s a great stress reliever, and it easily surpasses vanilla doom. Sergeant Mark IV has done a bang-up job on this great mod. However, I’d hesitate to call his “apology” shown at 13:15 a sincere one. He states pretty clearly that he’s apologizing because it suits his own interests, not because he’s remorseful of his actions. And he seems to feel as if the ones he offended are at fault for not understanding his humor, hence why he’ll now try harder to avoid offending those who aren’t “open minded.” Seems like an “apology” from a man who’s concerned only about the personal consequences of his actions, rather than how people are affected by them. Maybe he will put a cap on his toxic behaviors for the time being, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him eventually revert to his old ways if he feels he can get away with it again. That said, I suspect most people aren’t much different inside, only being “good” around others where it suits them in society. Sergeant Mark IV is just more open about it.

I completely disagree, there’s taking references to use as inspiration, like analysing car accidents to get general idea. Then there’s literally taking the actual reference and putting it in the game. It’s distasteful, disrespectful and ethically wrong. And if you can’t see anything wrong with that then you’ve got issues. The dead space example is completely different to this, they don’t disrespect those people who died

So I have been following Doom since 2001 and I have some insight on some of this. I know Mark personally. -I agree with you about the gore sprites. However you completely missed the point of the argument was. Mark basically cut the pictures down and put them directly into Doom. What I am basically trying to say is that he didn't make new sprites based on the gore pictures. He actually uses the gore pictures themselves. Real people had to die or suffer to make the sprites. That was their argument. - Mark HATES HATES HATES project brutality. You mention it and he completely ignores anything you say about it. He pretends it doesn't even exist. -Mark is a troll sort of. Deep down he is a decent guy. Knowing him over the years I've never had a problem with him. I believe Mark was being edgy when he was younger (I could see that personally) The Doom Community is a toxic toxxxic place. If I use the user name I used when I was a 13 year old kid I get banned immediately. I was just a hyper annoying child (and a troll) so they still hold all of that against me. Not realizing it's been over 20 years since then. They hold grudges over things. I have even seem some extremely degenerate behavior coming from the community (nothing I can mention in a comment box. I guess I could say that at least back in the day my friend was groomed). Not to mention I have seen so many legal disputes over silly things like using Map01 as a base for a level and then crying saying it's illegal. The worst case of something like that I have seen was some guy made a mod called Nimrod and another forum user ripped the sprites and put them in his custom wad. Nimrod creator threatened legal action over some sprites. Me as a kid wanted to make a was called OHgNOZILLEGAL.pk3 with a bunch of doom2.wad copies and Nimrod weapons. I never did but I thought it would of been funny. My suggestion for a doom video would be the history of ZDaemon. I could provide some interesting information about the early days of ZDaemon 0.99 and CSDoom. It would make a good video.

I think there's a real difference between using images of gore as a reference for art and digitising photos of gore to use as assets in games. I think it's disrespectful to the deceased.

The little fact that some dude under a rock managed to turn lead to gold, - was definitely going to make some "creators" jealous. No matter how religiously they would try to deny it. When you see project stats, that people have downloaded it millions of times - and involuntary compare it to whatever you might have made...always lead to two options. One, is where you are inspired to try harder, brimming with positive energy to do something brilliant, creative and unique to inspire others in the same way. And the other, well - is just like those odd dupes. Diving into their own uselessness and self-pity. The man is a genius, no understating that. Id Software may have invented the FPS wheel. True that. And this guy made it round.

I've been making doom mod's for 16 years, so I can say, as a modder, I kinda loathe the mod, but not in the way most people would think. The mod is playable and it brought a new generation of players into classic games in a sort of way so that's cool, but with that it also brought a bunch of people demanding other people's mod's (mine included) to be bd compatible. It's easy to ask that when you never wrote a single line of code, thinking it maybe a copypaste or loading two files at once and call it a day, but far from the truth. The amount of work it takes to make your work to be compatible with someone else's work, specially one as complex as bd is a big pain. Specially, when you consider the peak popularity of his mod was back when zscript wasn't a thing, therefore, the code relied on a bunch of hacks, which was the norm back in the day, so not only you had to readapt your work into someone else's code, but you aldo had to understand their hacks. Big pain. Main reason why I never bothered to make my own stuff bd compatible. Also, bd wasn't part of my vision on my mod's. Simple as. That also brought lots of fanboys hating because "why no bd compatible?" totally not understanding bd was a mod on itself, not a game on its own, therefore, requesting a mod being compatible with another mod. It would be like, asking black mesa to be compatible with fistful of frags. Not because both games were made on the source engine means they have to be compatible with each other. Personally, I never knew the guy, so can't talk about him personally. He almost worked on zion, attempted to enter the group, I remember I opposed, but I barely remember what happened back then as it was something that lasted for few weeks back in 2016. And sorry for long text, my experiences with the mod and its fandom while modding a decade ago wasn't the best. The situation with its fandom got sightly better, but the memories...

In this day and age, claims of "hate" automatically raise red flags. As I recall, the voice actor of Broly was branded a raging homophobe because he thought signing an autograph to Naruto Yaoi would conflict with his religious views, and offered to sign something else instead, cue campaign to ruin his career.

I was around in the community from the very first releases of Brutal Doom (and had contributed some assets to it), and have seen the whole shitshow unravel throughout the years. The prevailing cause for the hatred of the mod, aside from all that's been mentioned here, was the fact that a lot of newcomers to the Doom community got their start through Brutal Doom rather than the vanilla experience, thus leading to demands being thrown at mappers that they accommodate for the mod as well as major disdain of newcomers from the vanilla sector. It definitely wouldn't have had the same level of notoriety had that not been the case. All said and done, I can't really hold anything against him for all that happened back then; that was a decade ago, and though a lot of his actions were shitty and still are considered as such, I don't have much say as I was definitely no saint either. As a side note, around the time that v0.4 was out, I posted a suggestion in the forums for special kill sequences whilst in Berserk mode in order to add some rip-and-tear to the powerup. I don't know if that's what directly led to fatalities in BD, but the fatalities did inspire the Glory Kill mechanic in Doom 2016/Eternal, so if that was the case, then I can hold a little bit of pride to that.

It's just Mark over reacting to some people due to his age and also a part of the community that was toxic and wanted him to fail or block him from the community at any cost. Also a note: Sgt Mark is unbanned from Zandronum and the group who tried to hard to ban him there funnily enough are now permanently banned, I wonder why. but yeah, it was just an underage dude doing underage things, and a toxic community trying to cancel him, is what I see from all that (I was even featured on the credits of brutal doom and I dont even recall what I did haha)

From my recent interactions with Sgt, I'd say he's grown as a person and now takes criticism in much better light, and is overall a nice dude to talk to. Considering by the time the "controversies" came out, he was still in what I call his "edgy" phase, I don't think it's fair to shit on what is obviously a very talented creator for stuff he did literally over 10 years ago. People just need to take a pill chill. Also, as a Brazilian person, no, Sgt is not the leader of a neonazi group, lmao

The mod is great. Extremely detailed and near-damn flawless. *Of course* it takes a rabid turbonerd to create something like that in their spare time, and *of course* the violent opposition of a horde of equally frothing turbonerds that is the Doom community can drive anyone further into insanity. I've seen it happen a number of times over the years with less known modders.

I have no problem with devs using images of dead people as references while creating their own content, but I draw the line at actually including said images AS content in your video game which is what Sarge did. I just have to say that is a personal value of mine that I'm happy to disagree with other people about.
